Mission: RIHD was formed with other volunteers to educate and empower Virginia families and communities on the negative impact of a racially-disparate system of mass incarceration and through educational outreach to reduce the level of societal disenfranchisement of the formerly incarcerated. RIHD is a small, but extremely effective, all-volunteer nonprofit, known for its ground-level work in assisting and empowering the incarcerated and their families through grassroots and "self-help" initiatives. RIHD provides direct services to the incarcerated and their families including low-cost transportation for families to visit loved ones incarcerated at many of Virginia distant and overly rural prisons. RIHD also provides outreach and education on unfair sentencing laws, the restoration of rights for the formerly incarcerated, the benefits of “Banning the Box,” in employment, and support for families attempting to understand and navigate the criminal justice system.
Results: Over the past 15 years RIHD’s influence has grown as a respected and accepted voice on the issue of sentencing reforms, reentry and grassroots advocacy. We have participated in state-wide discussions with leading state and government voices on the impact of incarceration on families. Lillie Branch-Kennedy has worked with national groups and coalitions including many of the top criminal justice advocacy groups on both state and national reform. This past year has allowed us to create sustainable relationships with many key legislators who patroned legislation in support of our issues. We additionally have increased our partnerships and advisors on policy and communications outreach in a way that allows us to focus on refining the MJT in a way that allows us to help create sister-organizations throughout the state.
