Mission: Regenerative Sciences Institute seeks to help define the emerging discipline of Regenerative Biology by fostering scientific cooperation and creating a unique environment where innovative minds can do original research. Advances in Regenerative Biology are likely to revolutionize medicine: eventually we may be able to regenerate organs as complex as the heart and circumvent diseases associated with aging. We hope to help catalyze such advances by promoting the integrated use of the latest technologies derived from disciplines such as Synthetic Biology and Systems Biology.
Programs: Basic research on Aging and Regeneration, including projects to identify key aging mechanisms and to create cells equivalent to embryonic stem cells using defined methods that do not involve embryos. Sprint 2007 RSI Stem Cell Biology High School Internship Program launched. Five students from local area from local area high schools have been selected to participate in a program to teach how to conduct biological research. Spring 2007 RSI University Fellowship Program begins. Students from UC Berkeley and nearby Stanford University are studying planaria regeneration and human stem cell biology. We are creating computer models to help guide engineering stem cells for medical use.
