Four tribes were awarded grants of $20,000 to increase their health departments readiness to apply for public health accreditation. Each tribe prepared a detailed work plan outlining how they will use the funds to make a measurable increase in their performance and readiness for accreditation. As a result of the grant, one health department has since been accredited, one has applied and is in the accreditation process, one has completed the prerequisites to apply, and one completed a community health assessment that will be used for a health improvement plan. Red star staff provided ongoing support, technical assistance and referrals to resources. Red star convened several national roundtables and community engagement activities to bring tribes and tribal organizations together to identify strategies for improving public health performance, build a national indigenous community of practice in public health, and identify ways to increase the number of tribes that access existing grant opportunities and resources available through grants from private foundations, federal agencies and other sources. The result was a summary report that was distributed nationally, including recommendations and strategies for the field.
