Mission: Christmas in April began in 1973 in Midland, TX, where some local community leaders and volunteers assisted a neighbor in need by rehabilitating her dilapidated home. The program spread, and Christmas in April USA was founded in 1988 as the national headquarters, offering assistance to our 245 affiliates across the country to provide necessary repairs to low-income homeowners and communities. The work done on these homes is free for the homeowner, and done primarily by skilled and unskilled volunteers. Both volunteers and recipients benefit from improving their communities, one house, one non-profit facility, at a time. In 2000, the organization''s name was changed to Rebuilding Together to better reflect our mission and programming.
Programs: To preserve and revitalize houses and communities by providing free home rehabilitation services to low-income elderly and disabled homeowners.
From the first time I helped this group rehab the home of an elderly cancer survivor, I was hooked! I am still amazed at the amount of home repairs this group can accomplish through sheer volunteerism with no paid staff and no cost to the homeowners. As a volunteer, I derive great personal satisfaction when I see a homeowner's face light up at the end of the work day, often with tears of appreciation. As aboard member, I am in awe of the numbers of volunteers mobilized each year, and am proud of the financial stewardship that limits administrative expense.
