Mission: The mission of Rebuilding Together Oakland is to rehabilitate homes for low-income elderly or disabled individuals as well as community facilities in the City of Oakland.
RTO utilizes the hard work of skilled and unskilled volunteers, and leverages financial and in-kind donations to make these improvements at no cost to the homeowners. RTO also rehabilitates nonprofit facilities that work directly within low-income communities.
Rebuilding Together Oakland was founded in 1993 as an auxiliary program of the Center for Independent Living. In 1995, the organization was incorporated as Christmas in April Oakland and received its 501 (c)(3) nonprofit status. Rebuilding Together Oakland now operates three main programs throughout the year: the flagship April Rebuilding Program, the Block Building Program, and our Safe-At-Home Program. Utilizing volunteer labor and in-kind contributions, Rebuilding Together Oakland is able to produce a high return - each dollar donated is leveraged to produce $3 of added value to the community.
In 2008, Rebuilding Together Oakland plans on making the following contributions to the local community:
* 64 homes to be rehabilitated
* 14 non-profit community facilities to be repaired
* More than 2,700 participating volunteers
* With over $1.4 million in improvements
We need your help to make it happen! We are looking for the following resources to support our programs:
* Project Sponsorships by your company or community organization
* Individual donations
* Skilled and unskilled individual volunteers and volunteer groups
* In-kind donations of materials.
Please consider giving a day or a weekend to your community this year. Or if you’re unable to help us physically, remember that your donations fund our maintenance and beautification efforts. While we try to procure supplies through donations, some items still must be purchased.
Rebuilding Together Oakland thanks our generous sponsors for their support.
Results: Since our inception in 1993, Rebuilding Together Oakland's contributions to the Oakland community have included:
* 374 homes rehabilitated
* 66 community facilities rehabilitated
* Renovations valued at $10 million
* More than 21,000 participating volunteers
Target demographics: Low-income elderly and disabled homeowners in Oakland
Geographic areas served: Oakland
Programs: We operate three distinct programs:
1) Rebuilding Weekend, held on the last weekend in April. In 2005, Rebuilding Together rehabilitated 26 homes and eight community facilities during this effort. Over 2,000 volunteers were utilized; 2) Rebuilding Together Oakland runs a year-round Ramps Program to help targeted homeowners and facilities with time-critical improvements, such as wheelchair ramps and other ADA compliability; 3)We run our "Block Building Program" in which we work on multiple homes on the same block during the month of October. Typically, this event is held in West Oakland.
Rebuilding Together literally brings together numerous local congregations, civic groups, businesses, and other volunteers to help members of the community who need significant home repairs that directly affect their comfort and safety. Many older residents lack the knowledge or resources to make these repairs, yet their home is their most valuable asset. Skilled team leaders plan the projects and insure that the work is done right and that volunteers (both skilled and unskilled) know their time was well-spent. As a volunteer coordinator for Kehilla Community Synagogue, it's been a pleasure to work in partnership with other congregations and to learn from our skilled team leaders.
