My son and I loved volunteering together with Rebuilding Together North Central Florida! We went to a home in Alachua and met the woman that we were helping. You could see that she was in need. But when I first pulled up to the house, I saw that the home had a new roof and new exterior paint and a little bit of landscaping. I was thinking, “why does this person need urgent help?” And then I saw RD at the door, and the reason because Rebuilding Together had already done it! They supplied all the tools for us, taught us new skills, but most importantly, it was a memory-building way to volunteer.
This 501(c)(3) does excellent work on homes in need of critical repair. It defines critical need as a condition that threatens the health and-or safety of the occupants. With very few employees (designed to be such), they have a strong volunteer base that includes skilled contractors who donate their time and often materials. The organization gets as many products as possible donated, and for those materials that are not donated, they search for the best price on quality materials that will last and withstand multiple usage. They are highly focused on energy efficient products and practices, from installing weather-stripping to energy efficient windows, more often than not reducing a homeowner's utility bill. This is an honest organization with good business practices and not overloaded at the top with outrageous salaries and benefits. Well worth your money.
