Causes: Arts & Culture, Cultural & Ethnic Awareness
Mission: Rasika's primary exempt purpose is to promote and educate the public on indian arts and culture in the state of oregon. This is accomplished by presenting lecture demonstrations, workshops and classical indian music and dance concerts by master artists of india in oregon and other neighboring states.
Programs: Rasika accomplishments for fiscal year ending 5/31/2017 (a) rasika presented a series of classical music and dance concerts and outreach events this season detailed on our website with funding support from westaf tourwest, racc and intel corporation matching funds. We continued our arts educational efforts by offering classical music lessons with resident teachers as well as visiting artists. Rasika conducted music lessons and workshops in the local community in portland metro areas including hillsboro, beaverton, tigard and portland and seattle. We had two resident music teachers to teach indian vocal/violin and percussion lessons to local students.
b) rasika commissioned and presented a major dance production "duality , an immigrant's experience" choreographed and staged by dr. Jayanthi raman with troupe of 6 artists from india and 14 local classical dancers. We commissioned rajesh uppalapu to create original music score to create record with 10 musicians and the musical score was recorded in india. We also had background imagery created by a professional video editor. This also received a major grant from oregon community foundation over the 2 fiscal years. Last fiscal year the outreach efforts were completed. This fiscal year we presented the grand ballet at portland5 newmark theater with overwhelming attendance. This was a major contribution to the oregon community. The following year we will be taking this on tour.
c) rasika presented a grand music concert by rahat fateh ali khan at showare center in kent, washington state. Several attendees from both oregon and seattle attended this concert as this was conveniently located between seattle and portland. This concert had the qawwali music representing age old music of pakistan and india. This was a communal integration world music concert attended by 1400 people.
