Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Community Mental Health Centers, Mental Health

Mission: “A sanctuary for animals and a counseling center for people founded on hope and healing made available to all regardless of ability to pay.“ We reach out with helping hearts to change our world by recognizing the Inherent worth of every living being in our community. Working with our animal partners and Licensed Professional Counselors, we help each child, each adult, and each family experience transformative change available through trauma-informed animal assisted psychotherapy. We believe that victims, especially children, are innocent and it’s our moral obligation to help provide them with a way to heal from these terrible traumas. The segment of the population we serve desperately needs our help. I am honored that our program serves the entire Dallas/Ft. Worth Metroplex and is expanding.

Target demographics: people and animals that have been traumatized by abuse and neglect as well as veterans suffering from PTSD

Direct beneficiaries per year: 330 clients and 37 special needs animals

Geographic areas served: North Texas

Programs: We have two programs: a mental health counseling program and a farm animal rescue/sanctuary program. These two programs come together through the bond that forms between the counseling client and the animal during the Equine/Animal Assisted Counseling (EAAC) sessions

I find myself near paralyzed by a swelling of tears as I try to decide how best to "review" this nonprofit called Ranch Hands Rescue. To say that what has been created here far exceeds expectations does not quite capture the magnitude of what I have discovered in this place, in these people, in these animals, and through them, in myself.
Ranch Hands Rescue is founded on the principle that every life has inherent worth and dignity, no matter the loss, no matter the trauma, no matter the fear. Through working with animals rescued from abuse and neglect in an environment that puts felt safety at the forefront of all interactions, I have learned that I am worth being seen.
As a trauma therapist working with individuals who have experienced the worst of what this life can inflict, I have had the great honor of witnessing the healing capacity of those considered "broken" to heal one another. Ranch Hands Rescue is truly a place of animals helping people and people helping animals.
Through my experiences at this sanctuary for the wounded and discarded, I have found hope despite suffering, comfort amidst pain, and joy that I had thought could not be reclaimed. I can think of no greater calling for my life than the rescue and recovery of the vulnerable. Ranch Hands Rescue is where I found meaning, purpose, and self-worth.

Joining the team at Ranch Hands Rescue is a blessing I did not expect!! The people, the animals, and even the environment are such a pleasure to be around. I am so very honored to be practicing trauma-focused Equine and Animal Assisted Therapy at a location that values all life highly. I mean, what a concept! Rescuing abused and neglected animals and helping them become therapy partners for abused and neglected people. What higher purpose could one ask to be a part of :-)

I retired almost 4 years ago and have been exploring volunteer opportunities. I was aware of RHR because of their presence at the All American Pet Spa. I began volunteering in the RHR office during the summer of 2018. I thought that RHR rescued animals but I quickly learned that they do so much more! They also serve children who are impacted by sexual abuse or mental health issues. Veterans, who return from active duty with PTSD and or depression are also served by the counselors at RHR, using traditional, as well as animal therapy. As a retired social worker, volunteering at RHR has been a great fit for me. The staff and leadership at RHR are dedicated to their goals of helping animals and people through very difficult times in their lives. The compassion of the staff is evident through their interactions with one another and with those they serve. This is a small non-profit that tackles hugh tasks each day. The future includes services for boys who have fallen victim of Human Trafficking. They are committed to helping a variety of populations who have found themselves in devastating circumstances through no fault of their own. I am so happy that my husband and I found RHR and plan to continue to serve their efforts in what ever way that we can. Vickie H, McMurry

This is a wonderful organization that rescues animals and people. Along with the help from counselors, this allows the healing to begin. Everyone I have met is dedicated and caring people, who want to be there for those who need it. They serve veterans, children, adults who have experienced trauma, etc. I am so glad that I learned about them and became involved volunteering for the organization.

Ranch Hands Rescue is an incredible organization made up of some of the most caring, compassionate people I have had the pleasure to meet. More than just an animal sanctuary, Ranch Hands Rescue also works to rebuild people's lives after severe trauma, PTSD, and abuse. With a new initiative to help young men who have been victims of sex trafficking, they are reaching out to help more vulnerable and exploited people. RHR is an innovative and life-saving organization, both for animals and people.
