The people involved in creating Radio Free Brooklyn have always been welcoming, enthusiastic, thoughtful, and engaged. They care deeply about keeping their roots authentic and local, and they pay attention to what it means to be a part of a community. When I first got involved, I was so excited by how much joy these people seemed to take out of their work. Local radio is the perfect way to give a neighborhood a voice, and making it low-cost and accessible is huge for people who otherwise may not have the means to express themselves.
I started as someone who sat in on people's shows to learn more, and because I stuck around, I was welcomed enthusiastically. I now have my own show and am an integral member of the organization. It's a great way for people to learn about the radio industry and do some good. And because New York City is such a big and impersonal place, this personal corner means so much more. Radio Free Brooklyn IS what Brooklyn sounds like.
Radio Free Brooklyn gives its hosts complete creative freedom to provide much needed diverse programming. These one-of-a-kind shows reach an audience that values the philosophy and vision of Radio Free Brooklyn to provide unique, locally-generated programming. Many independent artists and local artists are thrilled that they get exposure and that their voice is heard on Radio Free Brooklyn. As an on line radio station, Radio Free Brooklyn reaches both a local and an international audience. Local artists and artists from many countries on several continents have contacted me about having their music played on 'A New Latin World', the show I host. On this show, we have been able to interview a growing list of local artists, many of whom do in studio acoustic performances of a couple of their songs. We have also spoken via telephone on air with artists from Mexico, Guatemala and Colombia. The Radio Free Brooklyn platform has provided 'A New Latin World' a wonderful place to grow, to the point that local artists now make it a stop on their media tour.
