Causes: Human Service Organizations, Human Services
Mission: To end human trafficking through effective, measurable, fact-based, interactive, personalized prevention training.
Results: Thousands of individuals have used our virtual reality simulation and learned how this could happen to anyone. A brief "highlight reel" since our inception: 2017: Gathered research from human trafficking subject matter experts. To learn how people use VR headsets, we created and tested ~10 different VR experiences, informed by hundreds of user experience tests of people that never used VR. 2018: Built and released TRAPPED: A VR Detective Story, our VR application that teaches anyone how someone could be psychologically manipulated into becoming a trafficking victim. In 15 minutes. Works on HTC Vive and Oculus Rift. 2019: Built and released TRAPPED: A VR Detective Story for an affordable headset, Oculus Quest. This was first used by the University of North Texas Health Science Center, a major medical school. They have used it ever since to teach their medical students how anyone could become a victim. As you know, 88% of victims report seeing a medical professional while they are being trafficked, so this is "Front Line" defense. And we need more of it. 2020: Performed multiple events with Operation Underground Railroad. One in Salt Lake City at their headquarters and one in Los Angeles at Tony Robbins' 60th Birthday. 2021: "Human Trafficking Essentials" online course releases in April. Fundraiser to provide free courses for deserving students launched in March. https://2021openhearts.funraise.org/
Target demographics: Children, adults, and professionals. First time education, job training and continuing education.
Direct beneficiaries per year: Every year, we increase the number of our students and licensees. Annually, we help hundreds of medical university students become aware of this issue so they can directly identify and help victims, as well as teach hundreds of middle and high school students (and their parents) how to identify human trafficking and what to do if they encounter it.
Geographic areas served: United States, primarily, with our Virtual Reality simulation, and worldwide through our online program.
Programs: Online and in person classes that create awareness, raise empathy for victims, and teach people how to make a difference in your local community.
