Causes: Arts & Culture, Singing & Choral Groups
Mission: Quire Cleveland makes life more harmonious by providing a vital connection to distant lands and ages past, through the human voice. Breathing life into choral music which may have lain silent for centuries, Quire reveals the timelessness and universal humanity of this art. Under the artistic direction of Ross W. Duffin, Quire performs nine centuries of a cappella repertoire.
Results: Quire Cleveland is a professional chamber choir established in 2008 to explore the vast and timeless repertoire of choral music over the last 9 centuries. Quire’s programs introduce our audiences to music not heard in the modern era — including premieres of works newly discovered or reconstructed — breathing life into the music of our shared heritage. Its outstanding local musicians, trained at leading conservatories and colleges, collectively represent 500 years of choral singing. In 9 seasons, Quire Cleveland has: • Presented 49 concerts (29 different programs) of music from the 12th to 21st centuries; • Earned popular and critical acclaim; • Produced CDs of Carols for Quire from the Old & New Worlds (3 vols), Madrigalian Motets from Jacobean England, The Land of Harmony: American Choral Gems, England's Phoenix: William Byrd, The St. Matthew Passion by Richard Davy; • Won grants from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture and Ohio Arts Council; • Broadcast live and recorded performances on classical radio; • Established an education program of workshops & lectures; • Attracted 675,000+ views on YouTube from 210 countries.
