Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Children & Youth, Children & Youth Services

Mission: Positively affecting the lives of pediatric cancer patients and their families through the writing, recording and sharing of their original songs.

Programs: Purple songs can fly is a unique project that provides a musical outlet for the many children being treated for cancer and blood disorders at texas children's cancer & hematology centers and their siblings. In this program, the children work with anita kruse and other professional composers to write and record their own songs. Using the latest technology in an in-house studio, composers work with the children individually or in small groups to compose, record, and burn songs to disc within short sessions. In 2011, purple songs can fly created a portable recording studio which now enables the composers to also work with in-patient children at their bedsides to write and record their own songs. Each year, songwriters from purple songs can fly participate in texas children's cancer centers' "retreat of renewal" where they work with the siblings of children who have recently passed to write and record a song about the loss of their brother or sister.

purple songs can fly again partnered with voice america kids in 2014 to provide an online monthly radio show to share the children's songs. The show is hosted by two child cancer survivors. In 2014, 12 shows were produced and each monthly show aired 3 times per day/seven days per week. Approximately 10,000 listeners tune in to each show.

My son was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood disorder in 2006. He was scared and began to withdraw from things he loved and life in general...that is when PSCF came into our lives...he went in and wrote and recorded a song, while we waited for the doctor, and found the courage to fight his disease. It was through this great organization that I got my out-going, lovely boy back..he has since written and recorded many songs, while in Texas Children's on floor 14.. I will always think Anita, the wonderful creator of PSCF was our own personal angel.
