Mission: Purple Moon Dance Project was founded in 1992 by Artistic Director Jill Togawa to increase the visibility of lesbians and women of color and to encourage social change, peace and healing in our society through the medium of dance. During the past 15 years the Company has featured the work of over 100 lesbians and women of color performers, composers, visual artists, and musicians, and has become a leader in promoting women of color and LGBTQ arts.
Programs: The Company produces an annual home season of concerts in the San Francisco Bay Area. Purple Moon also promotes arts education as a component of its community arts and health programs, and supports a larger constituency comprised of women of color in substance abuse recovery, elder lesbians, and Asian Pacific American women living with life-threatening illnesses. Since 1998, Purple Moon has conducted over 700 arts residency workshops, and actively participates within the larger San Francisco community to facilitate workshops and training for other community-based health organizations.
