Mission: Pulama ia kona was established with a mission to preserve, protect and enhance the special qualities of historic kona. Pulama is dedicated to educating the community about the importance of retaining kona's sense of place through the preservation of its historic landscapes, architecture, roadways, archeology and view planes. It encourages the adaptive reuse of historic buildings located along mamalahoa highway.
Programs: In 2009, pulama's pilot kona heritage corridor was designated hawaii's first scenic byway. The corridor is now officially recognized as the mamalahoa kona heritage corridor. This scenic byway is distinguished by the intrinsic historic quality that dates back to the days when mamalahoa was a trail that encircled our island and used by early hawaiians.
in 2010, the federal highway administration accepted the application from pulama to commence a corridor management plan. Pulama is working on creating a broader membership base and seeking further financial assistance to help with this management plan
in 2011, pulama, as the sponsor of the mamalahoa kona heritage corridor, state of hawaii's first scenic by-way, has been very busy developing the corridor management plan. Funded by a grant from the federal highways administration, pulama was able to contract the services of five consultants to provide information for the corridor management plan. Pulama's directors and volunteers of the local by-way committee continue to spend hours reviewing consultant reports and developing strategic plans for corridor management implementation
