Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Homeless & Housing, Homeowners & Tenants Associations, Housing Development, Construction & Management

Mission: Utilizing the community land trust model of permanent affordability, expand homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income families so they can live or remain in the community of their choice. Serve as a leading strategic partner to improve affordability region-wide, with a focus on areas affected by displacement. Since 1999 Proud Ground has made lasting investments in the financial stability and assets of low-income families by addressing the critical need for more affordable homeownership opportunities–-opening the door to the long-term wealth building, stability, and pride of owning a home. Proud Ground leverages community investment in every transaction, buying down the purchase price of a home. In exchange for an affordable home, Proud Ground homeowners agree, should they sell, to shared-appreciation resale provisions that provide for a fair return on their investment while ensuring the home remains affordable for the next low-income, first-time homebuyer. The home remains in Proud Ground’s portfolio of affordable homes, and the original subsidy grows as the home appreciates in value. An ongoing priority is our role in Portland’s campaign to close the minority homeownership gap. Deliberate research and dialogue resulted in an outreach strategy that has increased our service to communities of color. We are committed to healthy and efficient buildings supporting healthy families. Our materials and systems are carefully chosen to provide durability and support a healthy indoor environment. Projects use Oregon High Performance Homes, Earth Advantage, and LEED for Homes certification processes and guidelines. Proud Ground serves the entire Portland, OR Metropolitan Region of Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington Counties, OR and Clark County, WA.

I was a renter who was eager to own my own home, but Portland's housing market was out of control, I could only afford homes way out of the way, or ones that would need lots of repairs. I liked what Proud Ground offered, a way for me to purchase a home that was the right size, and in a neighborhood that is not too far away from my work. I was delighted to be a part of something that would ensure that this opportunity would be available in the future for other home buyers.

Proud Ground is an innovative, unique organization providing a much needed opportunity for affordable home ownership in the Portland metropolitan area and beyond. Moreover it is successful, having a zero foreclosure rate with over 115 affordable homes in Portland. Proud Ground staff are dedicated, smart, and well-connected in the community, and I've enjoyed my time working with them while on the board.

Solid, smart, innovative, successful, integrity. These are just a few of the words I comfortably use to describe Proud Ground. My partner and I purchased our first home with Proud Ground in 2008. The staff made the intimidating process less confusing, worked seamlessly with our Realtor, and have continued to be a source of support and encouragement. Our purchase has fundamentally changed our outlook for our future and we could not have done it without Proud Ground.

I first learned of Proud Ground in 2005 and have been a supporter ever since. The work the organization does is foundational, essential, and crucial, I believe, for maintaining permanently affordable homes for persons and families in our community for years to come. I am pleased to continue to support Proud Ground and eager to encourage others to do the same.

I love Proud Ground. I believe that home ownership is key to a just society with a level playing field and equal opportunity. When more folks can own their own home, more folks are then interested in and able to participate in their community while achieving stability and economic growth. Proud Ground's program helps families do just that -- with the added bonus that the homes can't be bought and then "flipped", and that Proud Ground homes are always affordable.
