I've had the joy of watching Promise Youth Development grow and develop on the inside and out as it continues to reach youth of all backgrounds.
I've seen how the founders manage each group of children in respective manners so that each child feels important and knows that their voice is being heard.
The youth genuinely love coming to PYD because it isn't just another "after school program." It's a place where they can be comfortable being their true authentic selves knowing that there are several people in that room who love them unconditionally.
I'm truly honored to be a part of such a unique organization and can't wait to see what the future looks like for PYD!
As a member of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, I’ve had the opportunity to engage with the teenage youth within this program over the past year. It has been inspiring to see the genuine concern and love that Mrs. Tesha Boyd, her husband Andrew, and the other adult mentors give to the youth of this community. I have witnessed the growth and positive behavior changes in these young men and believe this program is a model to be duplicated in other areas of our community.
Promise Youth Development is an amazing program that assist our youth with tackling the pressures of "real life situations." The program's focus is on the youth and them having adequate tools and exposure to succeed. The program has mentors, guest speakers and a partnership with The Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department...all that work together to help foster a positive change in our youth. I'm glad to be a part of such an influential organization such as
Promise Youth Development.
My name is Alex Watson and I'm a Captain with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. I've been a part of the Promise Youth Development family for 11 months. I'm truly inspired by the leadership of the program's founders Mrs. Tesha Boyd and her husband Andrew Boyd. The program is preparing these young men and women to be future servant-leaders for the community. This program will serve as a model for youth outreach for the Charlotte community and I'm excited to have the opportunity to observe the program's future growth firsthand!
I am a Police Officer with the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department and have worked with children for approximately 20 of my 26 years of service. In June of 2017, I was asked by my supervisor to assist a youth group (Promise Youth Development Inc.) that was attending the CMPD Youth Symposium conducted at the police academy. On that day, I met with the founder of PYD, Tesha Boyd, who was a college classmate of mine. During that time, Mrs. Boyd explained the program and its mission. I could see her genuine concern and love for the children and I hopped on board and became a volunteer.
Since that time, I have mentored several of the male teenager participants. I feel that I have made a positive impact on the youths and introduced them to life skills that will benefit them in the time to come. I attend the weekly meetings and co-facilitate group sessions with the other mentors. I have taken groups on overnight trips as well as field trips during the day. PYD effectively utilizes its resources so that we can introduce the participants to activities and events that they would not normally have the opportunity to do.
I have volunteered and worked with several youth groups in the past and I can truthfully say that there is genuine love for the youths of the Promise Youth Development Inc. Program. I am glad to be a volunteer and be able to give back to the community and help develop the youth along the way.
This program provides a unique blend of support from community mentors, social workers and police officers. These volunteers work weekly to provide a warm, supportive and safe environment for children from elementary school through high school to learn their self worth, and to instill in them a set of values and skills which will carry them far into their adult life. The curriculum-based programming offers opportunities for the youth to share their experiences, points of view and real struggles and concerns in a judgement free environment in which both the adults and children learn from and support each other.
This organization has been a great asset to our community! The interaction and the change that I have noticed in the kids since the inception of this program has been amazing to watch. All of the mentors are happy to be there and give their all when interacting with the kids. The kids have respect for the mentors and show great respect to them. The kids are receptive to the stability and consistency of the weekly meetings. The relationship between the police officers and the kids is one step to bridging the gap. Their comfort level around police officers and trust has grown over time. The real life exposure the program offers is a betterment to the kids future. I would recommend this program be recreated in communities across Charlotte, across the country. I give Promise Youth Development 5 Stars!!
