When people in need are treated like kings and Queens and not looked upon as people in need that is what a great organization looks like .Be the change started helping the homeless ,feeding those in need and making life easier for so many .This organization has now had it's influence is West Warwick for many years ,I can assure you ,if someone has been coming for that amount of years ,they have been able to save hundreds of dollars a month on groceries and been able to use that money in other areas needed .The volunteers who work there are some of the most dedicated people I have ever met . They do not call in the inclement weather and say not today ,they look at it as a challenge ,their drive becomes stronger because they realize the cause .Those in need are part of us ,we could be there ourselves, so they are treated like family .The neat thing is Be The Change allows them to participate in helping by allowing them to help other families they know .Be the Change doesn't just do Be the Change ,they go above and beyond by volunteering their services to other needs in the community. Coreen and Mindy are examples of true heros in our community, I've never seen more dedicated people than them ,having no monetary compensation, just plain hearts of gold .And then of course the rest who are just as dedicated. They do not volunteer for notoriety, but simply because they see a need and they meet it .Their moto ...Be the Change you want to see in the world

This nonprofit "Project Hand Up" is a GOD SEND!
You never know in life what the future may hold for you, I have always done very well until I hit a bump in the road, and things were not easy, a friend told me about Project Hand Up, she said they are the BEST thing that ever happened, so I did, at first I was embarrassed, I never really had to ask for help, but at this point I knew my family needed the help . My experience was AMAZING ! They have everything running like a well oiled machine, from the first person that warmly greets you and gives you your number in line to the next person who also welcomes you warmly and directs you were to go, and then you just pop open your truck and you are warmly welcomed again! And even as you leave you receive a big smile , as well as have a good day and see you soon! On my drive home I started to cry, and said to myself there are still WONDERFUL people out there, they treat you with KINDNESS, DIGNITY and RESPECT, and my family and myself cannot THANK them enough, it is by far the BEST NONPROFIT! Just remember they are always there for you even in the freezing cold, rainy or hot days, these volunteers are AMAZING !

Thank you so much again Project Hand Up, you are a God send that kept are family going.

Sincerely, Lisa Corey

I was hesitant at first to take advantage of this food supply --but so happy that I have. The amount of food and the variety supplied for six dollars is outstanding. I share the weekly pickup with my grandson. He loves to cook different things and is way more adventurous than I am to try new items. This is a huge help with expenses. Don't get me started with the staff!!! these people are absolutely amazing!! All volunteers working in all sorts of weather and dealing with so many people and still maintaining a smile and kind word all the time. It is such a pleasure to see them all each week. A Five star rating doesn't come close to what this project and those working it deserve. They are a perfect 10 in my book. Keep up the good work .

PHU, Has grown with the times, needs and hardships of everyone involved from volunteers, families served/helped each and every week. They are an amazing resource, with little to no complications for receiving food. Many times the lines go smoothly, and quickly, no hassle. I have used there services both when much needed and not so much but to stay ahead. Great community of people, who share and give back. Food that one receives and won't use gets passed onto another in the free neighborhood community page, no judgement. Many times the food are items that are basic food items such as bread, fruits vegetables and or snacks that are pricey or a luxury item to us struggling and wouldn't normally have the opportunity to try them. You never know what you will receive as it varys weekly. The food is great. I'm embarrassed to even mention this but 2 times I was a dollar short, one time a buck got stuck in seat tracks. Another I was just short. With screaming babies and a diabetic 12 year old in car, they let me go anyways.... I returned the kindness with a 10$ donation the following time to make up for my owed time.
I colect bags and egg cartons to donate to them weekly , whether I shop or not. Staff is so welcoming, friendly and sincere , while continuing to stay busy preparing bags for customers. There are no sign up fees, income checks, proof of paperwork income or need, it's simply run split by last names btwn 2 days of the week. And anyone over 60 or veterans can attend any of the 3 offered days. Obviously if you attend the food is needed for yourself and family.
The volunteers work hard and keep all in check in all weather conditions from the lot lines to the building where foods put in your vehicle for you.
It's a one of a kind system that works amazing when all the rules are respected and followed.
I highly recommend and refer people who could use help to phu. The shop days/ times are fair for all. Kindness goes a long way. Great organization! Great people. Great opportunity and resources. Some of the volunteers even have there own volunteer gig for other services that are amazing and great to be offered.

I personally have not needed Project Hand Up's services. However, I know 4 people who needed their service's when life hit them hard financially. For a $6 donation, Project Hand UP gives the community about a $200 worth of food that is donated by the public. Having a community service that PHU provides is a godsend for those people who are on a fixed income and struggle financially, especially if an unexpected bill arises, such as a vet bill, for example. Not only do the people in PHU serve the community in need with groceries, they are also very friendly and helpful. Project Hand Up - Thank you for all you do for the community!! Your services are very much appreciated, not only for the people you serve but also by those who are loved by the people you serve. It's a comfort to know our loved ones have a place to go for food should they need it. Thank you for that!!

Project Hand Up is an amazing resource that helps so many families with food insecurity. This organization is 100 % run and staffed with volunteers who truly care about the mission of rescuing food and getting it to people who need it weekly. Coreen and Mindy have made PHU their live’s work and it shows from their endless dedication in the form of time, physical labor, and true compassion. Every person served at PHU is treated with respect and dignity and encouraged to return. PHU is a community gem and it is amazing what they do. They should be a model for others nationwide so more organizations can commit to rescuing food. In some case, PHU rescues people. Thank you to everyone who contributes to this amazing place!

At least once a month I take advantage of this wonderful “Hand up” . It allows me to keep my cupboards stocked with staples, try fresh produce and fruits & enjoy desserts made by local Chefs. Besides the incredible value, it’s exciting getting items I’d never “splurge on” and it’s extremely convenient, especially for those of us with mobility issues. Shopping here allows me & my family to enjoy a better taste pallette and the savings helps the food budget stretch and include things I could never afford. Grateful for this organization and all the dedicated volunteers that help so many of us, in all kinds of weather. Nothing goes to waste as anything not liked by my family is shared with neighbors. Thanks for helping us!

This place is and absolute God send. With groceriey prices rising, and money being tight for everyone this is a place that actually helps. The staff is friendly, hard working and very thoughtful. You get so much food for a great bargain, you always get something over your money. Besides helping feed everyone and getting you to try things you would never buy and will probably write down to buy on your own, they rescue so much food that would just be thrown away. They feed so many who would go without food it's unimaginable. Apart from the help they provide they have become a staple in the community and deserve recognition nation wide. They have become more than a service to me and my family but friends. I have volunteered here and many others as well as becoming our go to donation spot for my job. All of the food we collect during nation wide food drive stamp out hunger last year we donated 10,000 pounds of food and a monatery donation the experience and gratitude shown is unexplainable. Great organization on of the best around!

Project Hand Up is an amazing organization. I feel like this concept fills in the gap between those who may not qualify for assistance, yet still need help with basic food needs. It isn't need based and is open to everyone, for only $6 a week. Coreen and the team of volunteers, happily serve the community and are out there regardless of the weather. I've seen the growth and expansion over the past 7 years and they stayed open during Covid, which was invaluable to many!!

I noticed a little 'corner store' near the theater where I was working. Went in the first time, and they told me that they gave you a bag and you could fill it with whatever you wanted from their shelves for $3!
Over the years they have grown and moved to a larger site. Throughout the pandemic they stayed open by asking for $6 for a trunkful of groceries, so no one had to interact. My main donation to them has been egg cartons, and slightly past-dated food from a lunch program where I worked.
While I'm grateful to not need their service, I'm delighted that it is there for my neighbors wo do.

I have been involved with Project Hand Up for over 7 years now. We started out with a meal feeding less than 100 people a week to serving an average of 500 families a week with groceries to help offset their grocery bill. We offer a mix of non perishable and perishable food which allows families to save hundreds of dollars in groceries a month! Project Hand Up has many dedicated volunteers, without them we wouldn’t be able to help so many. Also tons of support from many companies along with the community that help us help so many as well. It takes a village and we certainly have that!

Project Hand Up is a God send for so many individuals and families. It doesn't matter where you come from, everyone is treated equally and with respect and dignity. Food that would normally be discarded because it had a bruise is saved from the landfill and instead provides nutrition for people in need. Inflation has caused everyone to tighten their belts and make choices of how and where to spend their money. For some people the choice is when to eat and when to buy medicines, and or pay the utility bill. PHU allows people to buy 3 bags of food for a very minimal amount. All funds go directly into buying more food and paying for the costs of running the nonprofit. This organization is such a gift, and the volunteers who operate it are all amazing!

Especially the men that are at the school when the cars come in. They are kind, caring and look out for everyone. They are always up for a challenge no matter what comes at them. The BEST thing we can always if not able to use something help someone else in need. That is how much stuff you get and can share in helping others also. One of the (many) things that I love the most about PHU is the fact that *every* week we get multiple items that - regardless of cost - fall into the "luxury" category for us!
When I go grocery shopping I typically cannot afford to buy many "extra" items/splurges. We rarely eat out/get take out, which means I'm preparing 3 meals per day for 7 people. It may not sound like much but believe me.. it is A LOT lol
So when we get things like glazed donuts, chocolate covered pretzels, blueberry cake, cereal bars, etc in addition to some high end meats/fish such as lamb, sirloin steak tips & salmon + fresh fruit & veggies it's a HUGE treat & is SO appreciated!!!
My husband works very long hours (typically he's gone from 12p-12a) to support our family. With the cost of living skyrocketing on a daily basis, sticking within range of our weekly food budget was becoming stressful & difficult. Supplementing with PHU items has helped to eliminate this stress & allow me to feed my family well balanced, nutritious meals.
We are thankful for the program & especially for the volunteers who make the program run so smoothly. They greet you with a warm welcome, a big smile & such kindness!! Proof that there are still plenty of good folks out there!!

Have loved this place since first discovered them. They just keep getting better.
Before Covid, volunteered here. Then customers could go in and select what they wanted for extremely low cost. Staples, vegetables, fruit, dairy, baked goods. Each week they also offered specials.
Since Covid they offer to fill your trunk for only $6. Bags and bags of food, hand packed by volunteers and brought out and placed in your trunk. So much food, that it can be shared with others.

Those bags of food are amazing, packed to the brim with fruits and vegetables, breads, dairy, milk, etc. So much that we are able to share with others. They even have pop up sales with milk and fruit boxes so big.

It is hard to pass up the opportunity to sing the praises of Project Hand Up. I thought this year about what I appreciate most from PHU. As silly as it may sound, this year I appreciated the chips, the cookies, the candy, and other assorted goodies, the most. When you are stretching your food budget to cover the basic needs, treats are the first thing you mark off your list. Do I need treats? Physically - no! But mentally a treat can lift your spirits and those of your grandchildren and make life sweeter. Don't we all need a mental boost in these hard times? Yes receiving good, healthy food is great for our physical well being but PHU is a boost to our emotional well being also.

One other aspect that I feel is important to mention are the wonderful companies that donate some of the food we receive. Job Lot, Trader Joe's, Blount Foods are just three of the companies that immediately come to mind but believe me the rest are just as important.

Last but not least, this nonprofit would not exist without the care and compassion of Coreen St. Jean and her tireless group of volunteers. THANK YOU for caring and sharing!

What can you say about this awesome non-profit?? To begin, they live up to their name. It took me a while to grasp the concept that 'purchasing' from them actually helps others. As a disabled senior citizen I fought the urge to try it out but when the pandemic hit I was indeed in need. Going to 'Hand Up' was the best decision I made during that time. I not only received much needed food but also made good friends. There volunteers are the best!! Friendly, professional, caring, and always with a smile on their face. If my granddaughter goes with me, she gets a treat! If my dog goes with me, he gets a treat!

Is this a great non-profit? It sure is and deserves all the praise it receives!

Such friendly people, volunteering their time and energy to sort, pack and bring us food by the wagon load. Even put in our cars. Wow! They have been there in the winter with the cold, now in the rain, heat and humidity.
Love them all.

Project Hand Up (PHU) is a wonderful organization that benefits so many in the community. It is expertly organized by capable and cheerful volunteers who treat everyone respectfully. Our family has saved a lot of money on grocery shopping by receiving weekly from PHU healthy basics like fresh fruits and vegetables, milk, yogurt, eggs, potatoes,
carrots, onions, bread, cereals, and snacks and treats like chocolates!! We are amazed by the bounty and good quality, and happy to use foods that are still good but past the sell-by date. I'm thrilled that so much food is being saved from waste in the landfill and getting to those who can use and appreciate it. The drive-up system for pickup started during the pandemic is easy, orderly, and fair, with volunteers working hard with smiles in all kinds of weather to load cars with tons of great food. It feels like Christmas receiving this for such a minimal cost! Also, I and many others have shared extras with our neighbors, or gone to pick up for those unable to get there or without a car, further spreading the PHU reach. The days and hours that Project Hand up is open are generous and convenient, and massive planning and assembling must be happening behind the scenes to be serving so many on a scale this large. I'm in awe of how well-run this is and how selfless the volunteers are. This is truly an important non-profit that makes a huge and real impact in the lives of thousands of people in the community.

This is a win win situation for the community. Those who could use help in stocking their fridge and shelves and for the companies that have the extra food to donate, help is here. $6 gets you through the week with enough food to carry you over to the next week. No you wont be eating steak but you will be satisfying your hunger.

My daughter and I are barely scraping by and that means we have to do it by sacrificing our nutrition and skipping meals. I happened upon this group on Facebook and decided to go see what it was all about. We came back with fruit! Something we are not able to buy because it is so expensive along with vegetables and other staples. There are no words other than "Thank you" to express how grateful we are to this wonderful group of people.

First time and last time going . Paid for Mostly expired food. Family couldn’t enjoy hardly anything. The volunteers were very rude had no people skills and treat you like cattle . Bad experience that left us w a bad taste in our mouth. Probably pocketing a lot more than the worth of the food they are handing out.

We are very sorry that you had a bad experience. Because the food is past it's sell by date does not mean it is bad. I do know that you received some beautiful fruits and veggies even though you did not mention that. You also came on the wrong day and lied about your last name but we let that go and gave you your groceries anyways. Again we are sorry you had a bad experience.

Project Hand Up is an incredible nonprofit to say the least. They provide RI residents with an incredible amount and variety of healthy and delicious bags of food for a nominal fee, which not only helps feed families around the state but also builds a sense of community. I have been fortunate enough to discover their nonprofit fairly recently and can only imagine the level of impact they've had over the years (didn't know they'd been around so long!) but especially in the recent months in which many more families have had to face the detrimental effects of the pandemic and have endured food insecurity. This nonprofit has worked towards bridging the gap and has provided bags and boxes of food, including items from all of the food groups. This is certainly an organization to be proud of and the volunteers should be commended for their hard work and efforts in creating a RI community in which lack of financial resources is not a limitation to accessing quality, healthy food. Awesome job!

I never thought I would ever need to ask for help, I thought we were doing pretty well....until this pandemic happened and the world started spinning out of control. I found Be the Change/Project Hand-Up mentioned in one of my groups one day and decided to go and check it out. I could not be more overwhelmed! The volunteers are fantastic and very helpful and friendly. From the people in the parking lot directing traffic, to the people loading and filling my trunk, I could not be more in awe of them. They all volunteer to do a job and they put thier all into what they are doing. It moved swiftly and professionally and when I got home, I could not believe the things that were in those bags! I was able to give back a little bit when I brought them some bottled water for the volunteer who are working so hard in the heat, they were very appreciative. Keep up the great work, you are helping more people than you can ever imagine because with all the things given, I am even able to help some neighbors who are also struggling.

There have been so many positive things I have seen from this nonprofit. They have shown so much compassion and overwhelming positive attitudes especially now , during the covid-19 crisis. Being a single, unemployed mother money has been tight , to say the least. At times there were worries about either paying the bills or getting food. But being able to go to project hand up has been a literal life saver. They have been there making sure families have access to food and not having to worry about also paying my utilities. Every time I go, they are always friendly and non judgmental and it has made things just a little easier on the community and I can honestly say I couldn't thank them enough for all they do!

This organization is a food pantry with a twist. It’s more of a food supplement program in that rather than just giving a small amount food away, there’s a small donation asked for a large quantity of food. It’s open to everyone, no restrictions. This helps all the people who don’t qualify for assistance but still have a difficult time making ends meet. When there isn’t a pandemic, you’re allowed to come in and choose your own food. This has temporarily changed, during this pandemic the volunteers back the bags, you drive up , pay your $6 donation for 3 bags of groceries that the volunteers place in your trunk and you drive off without ever leaving your vehicle. It’s a wonderful hand up with everyone’s dignity intact.

I am a wife, and a mother of five children, and a foster mom of 1 child presently. We have been shopping at Be the Change/Project Hand Up since early 2017. We are a one income household and we have to make our income stretch beyond what you would think is possible. BTC/PHU has been instrumental in helping our family do that. Food is a very big expense in our home. We don’t receive food assistance and because of them being such a caring resource In our community we are able to have what we need for food and other necessities that they provide as well at such an affordable price. They sell very high quality fresh produce, meats, and grains. They also sell quality toiletries and pet food. BTC/PHU is truly a divine operation and I am so blessed to know them. They truly are being the right kind of change this world needs. They are a gift from God. Thank you for this opportunity to recognize this organization.

My sister and I moved to Rhode Island from Massachusetts about 1 year ago. We are self employed, and everything was going well. Then we had issues with the probate court about my Mother's estate recently after moving here. She died in 2015. We went into winter with no money in the bank. Things were getting desperate. I found this charity on a local facebook page. Coreen (the founder) has been a Godsend to my sister and I. Coreen always worked with me, if I had issues with money, and needed food. Also, we got some food for our Dog Jessie there, at very low prices. Not only am I grateful for getting food there, but the quality and selection of the food is outstanding. LOTS of fresh choices. I've always felt welcome there, and never felt bad about needing help. And no crazy red tape either! you go there, they tell you how it works, and then you can get great food.

I can tell you first hand how much the customers appreciate what is offered every week. They often express that without this organization they wouldn't be able to make ends meet. While looking to do some volunteer work myself, I came across a local organization called “Be the Change Sunday Meal”, founded by Coreen St. Jean. When I met with Coreen she explained that every Sunday, she & her team of volunteers host a wonderful home cooked meal for the homeless & impoverished in the community serving 50+ people each week.

In addition to the Sunday Meal, Coreen told me about a new endeavor called “Project Hand-Up”, which I am honored to now be a part of. This program is designed to help the homeless, working people & the elderly stretch whatever money they may have by providing groceries, toiletries, and over the counter medication all for a small donation. This program is not a hand-out, but a “hand-up” so people don’t have to choose between eating & paying their bills. To date, there are in excess of 2,000 customers.

I think Coreen literally spends 95% of her waking hours thinking of ways to help others. She is inspiring, persistent, strong, giving, non-judgmental & kind. Those coming through the doors looking for a hand, sometimes somewhat reluctantly, leave with smiles on their faces & a sense of dignity.

100% of all money collected through donations, fundraisers, etc. is used to sustain these programs.

The people that started it all are the most amazing and giving that I have ever met. They give so much of themselves without taking anything in return but seeing the smiling faces of all the people that Be the Change and Project Hand Up help. The Sunday meal is homemade by volunteers. So every Sunday is like a family dinner. The store by donation is such a huge help to everyone. For the suggested donation, a person can save so much money on food and everyday items needed. That savings can go to help pay rent and bills and other necessary living expenses without to much of a struggle. This organization is a blessing!! The people run it are truly amazing, all the time and effort they put into helping the community out is more than selfless. Taking time away from their own families to help families in need. I can not say enough good things about everyone! Thank you so much for doing this!!

I'm not just a volunteer I'm also a customer. The movement is such an amazing thing for a community that needs a positive face. Week after week I see first hand how much it all means to everyone that walks through the door. Project Hand Up and Be the Change is that helping hand that people can count on. Sending much love to all the volunteers that make this soooo successful.

What a welcome relief this Nonprofit is. I went one Sunday and purchased the Meal as well as 3 bags that day. I was able to get drinks; snacks - healthy ones; nuts; condiments and other items that I have to overlook at the regular store; the meal itself once defrosted and cooked has lasted longer because the chicken is so versatile and can be used in so many ways after cooking. Thank you. Look forward to visiting this place soon. The volunteers were so helpful and all had huge smiles for us.

This organization is the most loving non judgmental group of people helping others. The volunteers are amazing! The items from cereal to coffee ,condiments to complete meal items are amazing. Cookies and dessert I would never had been able to purchase. Medicines and toiletries are available for a reasonable donation as well. I want to thank them for all they are doing for the community and on a personal level for my family and friends.

Be the change has a dedicated group of volunteers who work tirelessly to serve a full meal every week to the less fortunate. Plus they volunteer anvd make available a vast assortment of groceries for pennies to anyone. Its not every day you hear of a group that does so much with so little. This area owes a big gratitude to this organization.

What they have done at Project Hand Up is amazing. They moved their weekly meals, Be The Change to another location, to create a store for people to come and get food at a minimal fee. Getting involved with this organization has helped me and my family as well as letting me give back to the community. It is amazing to see so many people come and shop to give to others. I myself have done this. The board member and volunteers really love what they are doing and do it from the bottom of their hearts!

Coreen St Jean and her group of volunteers are amazing. I learned about her organization almost a year ago. I have seen the tremendous support that "Be the Change" offers to the less fortunate in our community. I also see Coreen and her group give 100% of their time and effort not only cooking, preparing meals, and serving food, but working on all kinds of ways on making life better. Clothing drives, food drives, school supplies, toiletries drives, events to raise money and 100% of money goes to the organization. It's a great organization for our community.

Homemade marinara simmered on my stove and in the oven Chicken Florentine. It was time to join the rest of the Sunday cooks. Like a royals’ feast laid tins of meatballs, pasta, salad, vegetables, breads & desserts. Our friends waited by the door of the former ice cream shop turned buffet hall. There are families with infants and others who partake in the banquet. The group is diverse in age and ethnicity but have a commonality: They are the destitute and homeless in our local area. The cooks have a commonality: We are a group of volunteers who believe that no one regardless of poor economic circumstance should be without a home-cooked meal. Be the Change (BTC), is a registered 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and comprised of a group of community members. We use social media to organize meals and other items of need for the homeless and impoverished in West Warwick, RI and its surrounding areas. Our ask is simple: Please share our efforts to help us find new volunteers, inspire other communities to start their own BTC, and find monetary or tangible donations.

The top staff President and her family regularly use donations to provide for themselves including paying their utility bills, helping themselves to in-kind donations such as clothing, food and personal care items. They feel they have right to these items because they put their time an effort into Be the Change for "free" Donated until I found one of the top staff members wearing clothing I donated for a drive for homeless well before the items were offered to homeless.

We do not receive enough funds to pay utility bills for anyone little lone ourselves nor do we have any interest in clothing or food except to distribute these items to the homeless and impoverished in the community. This organization is totally committed to helping others and the top staff and the volunteers go above and beyond on a daily basis to make sure that the donations are distributed to the most needed in our community.

Be The Change is an awesome nonprofit group. They are all volunteers so 100% of everything that gets donated goes to the organization. This is rare to find in these days. The people that help out spend all their free time working at Be The Change to make it a better place. It is truly special what they do and how they help out the people that need them.

For months, I have seen Be the Change touch so many lives and make sure that every person has a hearty Sunday meal to look forward to. The organization recently had a FREE store for members of the public!!! Be the Change has just been such an awesome organization that makes sure that every single person is helped, and also that they too are special no matter the circumstances. I truly have seen the hard work that the founders have put in to make sure that people have food in their stomachs, clothes on their back, and even homes to live in.

This group epitomizes what it means to love without judgement. Their tireless efforts to help those in need is amazing. I have seen them go above and beyond on many occasions because it is truly in their hearts to so. They do whatever they can when they can simply because they love helping people. From the very beginning they have always been dedicated in their mission and have never wavered. They sacrifice much of their own lives for others and work together with other agencies to not only feed people but improve the quality of their lives. They have kept many from going hungry but have also made many people feel loved and cared for. In these times we live in this is so very important and we need more people like this group in the world.

Although I do not volunteer in person I try to find other ways to help this organization. I have given monetary donations. I am very impressed with the way this organization has helped needy people in our community they provide a Sunday meal to anyone in need. They have also brought our community together and there has been no shortage of people that want to help. The people who run this organization and the volunteers work very hard on a variety of projects to aid the needy. they even organized a bus to collect school supplies, they help homeless find housing and they help obtain donations for these people to help them move into their first apartment. They are a dedicated group of people and I am proud to have them in our community.

Coreen St. Jean has taken this charity from a few small events organizing and accepting donations of clothes and food to feeding people on a weekly basis. She has with the help of volunteers assisted people with housing that not many have been able to accomplish. This organization has grown in such a small amount of time it's inspiring. What a wonderful example how people can come together and help their community.
