Mission: Prison Book Program provides prisoners with free reading materials. With prisoners isolated in facilities that have chronically insufficient educational opportunities, we provide these materials to improve the lives and communities of prisoners to greatly reduce the likelihood of their return to the prison system.
Results: On average we send books to more than 6000 prisoners each year. We estimate that the two books included in each package are read by up to 25 prisoners before they reach the end of their useful life.
Target demographics: Prisoners in 46 states
Direct beneficiaries per year: 6000
Geographic areas served: US states, excluding: CA, MD, MI, NV, TX
The Prison Book program is a fantastic non-profit supporting prisoners across the country with books and reading materials. Volunteers can come as part of a corporate group, with Boston Cares or individually for a few hours. Volunteers can choose books from the library, review and create mailing information or package books for mailing. The organization helps prisoners to find a better path and helps them feel part of humanity. So often our society thinks only of punishment and not of returning people who have committed a criminal offense to productive society. All people deserve access to books and this organization helps with this in an extremely efficient way. Also, it's fun to be around books and to encourage literacy.
