Mission: Advocates for the preservation of chicago's historic architecture, neighborhoods and urban spaces throughout the city of chicago. Preservation chicago is committed to strengthening the vibrancy of chicago's economy and quality of life by championing the historic built environment. Preservation chicago protects and revitalizes chicago's irreplaceable architecture, neighborhoods and urban spaces. The organization influences stakeholders toward creative reuse and preservation through advocacy, outreach, education, and partnership.
Programs: We advocated for the preservation of multiple buildings that were of historical importance to chicago through education, outreach and strategic partnerships. In 2017, our rapid response community advocacy played an important role in the preservation successes of the greystone at 1436 w. Berwyn in andersonville and the hill house/serbian american club in lake view. Our high level advocacy helped to bring about the rfp for the century and consumer's buildings (chicago 7 2011 and 2013), the rfp for the union station power house (chicago 7 2017), the adaptive reuse of iit main building (chicago 7 2015), the adaptive reuse of agudas achim synagogue (chicago 7 2015), the adaptive reuse of church of the epiphany, and the proposed adaptive reuse of the sullivanesque jewel laundry building. Additionally, our efforts contributed to the reconstruction of the old cedar hotel facade, now the hotel viceroy, the landmark designation of the old main post office, the landmarking of the johnson publishing building and its historic rooftop signage, the renovation of the clarendon park community center (chicago 7 2015), higher levels of preservation at lathrop homes (chicago 2007 and 2013), and the designation of the uptown square landmark district.
