Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals

Mission: PAWS (Pound Animal Welfare Society of Montclair, Inc.) is a non-profit, 501(c)3 charitable organization dedicated to the humane treatment of animals and finding homes for stray and abandoned cats and dogs in our community.

Results: In our 41+ years of service to the community, PAWS has developed much expertise and a wonderful network of caring people, enabling us to be a highly responsive and flexible animal rescue group. We strive to answer every call and email in a timely manner, and offer guidance and alternatives to keep animals in their home, or when necessary, find a new home. We currently maintain two small sanctuaries – one for dogs and one for cats – which, along with our strong fostering network, enable us to continue sheltering a limited number of animals in need. At any given time, we typically can care for up to 8 dogs and 50 cats and kittens.

Target demographics: homeless pets

Direct beneficiaries per year: We successfully adopted many homeless cats and dogs. Animals were also pulled from high kill shelters and saved from euthanasia.

Geographic areas served: Montclair, NJ - Essex County, NJ

Programs: PAWS focuses on “rescue” and “reduce” through careful adoption, fostering, and humane education. The initiative expands our ability for: finding animals good, appropriate, forever homes; preventing warehousing and/or euthanizing adoptable animals; changing public consciousness about the value of animals and our responsibilities to them; helping address the puppy mills issue; and promoting spay/neuter.

I have been involved with PAWS for almost 20 years. It is a huge part on my life. We cover so many aspects of rescue, not just adoption but helping the community with their companion animals, providing education, vetting needs and just so much more. It's so rewarding to see that providing just a little help can go such a long way. It's great to know that we are still around and available for people to contact us with their rescue and animal needs.

PAWS , excellent in every manner of rescue. Being a volunteer with PAWS I see other rescue groups at the shelters picking up puppies and young dogs its all good but lets be serious here every rescue wants to scoop up the puppies knowing they are most adoptable and leave the older dogs behind without a chance ever of being adopted and face anesthetization. its heartbreaking, PAWS looks at the dogs that need there help!!! they take the most overlooked dogs that may need medication, seniors or have a health issue. They are an A+ rescue group. . They come to the needs of the dogs that need it most. I can not say enough good things about PAWS.

PAWS Is just a great animal rescue group. I can not say enough good things about them. President of PAWS Carole is just a heart warming genuine person who cares about the dogs and cats they rescue. She carefully reads there stories and selects those In MUCH NEED of rescue. She helps those who really need out that do not stand a chance because of there age or looks or possible health issue. I volunteer for PAWS and others but this one gets my full attention with volunteering here because of Carole and all her hard work and time , effort she puts into this rescue. I attached a picture of Hazel one of PAWS Rescue who came into the shelter very abused with broken bone that was never treated by her previous owner. PAWS Took her under there wings.

I have been volunteering with PAWS since 2001, and was an employee from 2004-2008. PAWS is an outstanding organization. Animals are never judged by their breed, looks or age. PAWS pulls dogs from other shelters that have been there a long time. They are fully vetted and put up for adoption. The adoption form might seem a little long for some people but that's because PAWS wants to match a dog to the people, ie-their family, how long the dog will be left alone, do they have other pets, so it will be a permanent home. The volunteers do cat adoptions on most Saturdays at Petco in Verona, and now that it is warm, at the Farmers Market in Mtc. All events are run by the volunteers. We have a tricky tray/holiday bazaar, Comedy Night, yard sale, Fair in the Square. PAWS runs solely on donations.

I am a volunteer with PAWS Animal Shelter. In the 16 years that I've been volunteering, I've seen the most caring people at PAWS. Animals are not judged by their age, looks or breed. Each animal PAWS takes in is given every opportunity to be adopted into a great home. At times, it takes longer to complete an adoption than other shelters, but that is because PAWS doesn't want the animal to come back because it is not the right match. After Angelo crossed over the rainbow bridge in August, 2015, PAWS helped find me Brucie, a wonderful hound mix. Not to replace Angelo, but to give another dog a good home and a chance to have a good life.

We adopted our wonderful dog and cat from PAWS. PAWS had rescued our dog from a neglect situation where the people moved and left our girl behind in an empty apartment. PAWS found her a wonderful foster home and then we adopted her. A perfect match. Our cat is the absolute sweetest. Everyone who meets him comments on his personality. PAWS was very helpful and caring.

Ever since I adopted my cat Ming from PAWS in Montclair NJ, I have volunteered to assist with their website and other related tasks. At that time they needed the help and I've continued on since.

PAWS has adapted to change over the years, but has continued their core mission with dedication for over 41 years.

The animals in their care get each treated as if they were one of the family. and they stand behind their adoptions for life. Their adoption counselors work with great care to ensure a responsible and well matched placement in a forever home. They are there for post adoption support which is so valuable if you ever need help.

Thanks and keep it up!

I'm a PAWS volunteer and I help with the website and other web related tasks. My jobs are easy compared to the Adoption Counselors and organization leaders. Even from behind my computer, I get to see the good work of all these hands on volunteers. They really care about the animals they rescue- and have countless success stories. (Mine was an abandoned cat, named Ming. I saw her on Petfinder and then adopted her from PAWS).

You can count on their experience and support through the entire process, and they will do their best to make sure there's a proper match between pet and family,

I'd highly recommend meeting them a an adoption event so you can see for yourselves!

I found a friendly, starving stray cat in Newark and wanted to find a home for her. I worked with PAWS, taking her to their adoption events and utilizing heir Petfinder page, and together, we found a great home for her. They helped every step of the way, and now a cat that probably would have died on the streets is a happy, healthy, pampered pet!

I’ve volunteered for PAWS for the past 6 years and have adopted three beloved fur family members. PAWS is a very caring organization that goes the extra miles to properly match animals with the right people and homes. Prospective adopters are thoroughly interviewed and followed up with so that their needs and the animals’ needs are met. PAWS saves many high risk animals and provides full vetting to all animals in their care. Both of our PAWS dogs were rescued from bad situations – one left abandoned in an apartment, and one abandoned outside, causing sever medical issues before landing on death row in a high kill shelter. Our dogs and cat, like all PAWS animals, received full veterinary care PAWS before being put up for adoption.

When we lost our beloved cat last winter we waited almost a year until we were ready for a new furry family member. We went to the "Clear the Shelter Event" and we adopted a cat and kitten. Our cat was shy and had been feral so not so willing to be touched, our kitten was a bundle of need and enthusiasm. It was a difficult few weeks. Not only does this shelter help when you adopt, but Jen has been with us every step of the way. To say that she went above and beyond would be just a massive understatement. It took about 4 weeks and this weekend for the first time we feel how much love our furry companions bring to our house. They are filled with mischief and fun. We could not love them more. Thank you Montclair Shelter, but mostly thank you Jen for supporting us and helping us and guiding us every step of the way! Where would we be without you.

Back in March 2014, I saw a beautiful dog online. I somehow knew this was to be our dog. PAWS told us she was an excellent dog, very friendly and good with everyone. She was originally in a kill shelter, but due to her personality, she was put out for adoption. When we went to visit the foster home, we brought our grandkids to make sure the dog was kid friendly. Boy, we were not disappointed! Not only was she kid-friendly, but people and animal-friendly and only wanted to give tons of kisses. Her name was Dinah from North Carolina...just a pure southern belle.

PAWS was very accommodating and wanted a lot of detail about us, the home, etc. Initially, I thought why all this info since our previous pitbull had recently passed away but realized they wanted to ensure the right people for the right dog.

If we ever adopt again (that is if we ever get another dog after Dinah), it will be through PAWS...

PAWS volunteer staff are dedicated and selfless. They are out in the community finding homes for rescues week in, week out. I volunteered as a dog walker for PAWS when they had a shelter home, and adopted from them (a cat I loved for 17 years!), and greet the volunteers still when I see them at a community adoption day. Cynthia Billek never met a cat she didn't like and works nonstop to place rescue cats into loving homes. This group has faced many challenges and never lost sight of the goal of helping animals in need.

PAWS really cares for the animals and works to match them with the right people and best homes for everyone involved. They are so thorough interviewing and providing information, as well as following up after adoption. One of our dogs, who PAWS rescued just in time from a high kill shelter, required several weeks of medical care before going up for adoption. PAWS saves many high risk animals and provides full vetting to all animals in their care. PAWS is a great organization!

RE: Charlie and Ginger

My husband and I were heartbroken when my black kitty cat, The Pooch, passed away in September of 2012, at the age of 16.

My husband and I had always talked about adopting 2 black kittens from our local animal rescue and shelter, PAWS Montclair.

In October 2012, we were ready to adopt and thought we would find 2 black kittens. We used PAWS Montclair and looked at the pictures of kitties posted on their website. On October 17th, my husband and I drove 20 minutes to Maplewood to pick up brother and sister, "Charley and Harley", 8-week-old kittens from the foster family. They had been with their foster family for just 1 week. Their story is touching. The foster Mommy wrote in her blog, "Welcome to Maplewood, little ones. 4 healthy and beautiful kittens were rescued from being euthanized last week at the eleventh hour. Thanks to the Pilots N Paws Rescue Program, they were flown from NC to NJ for a second chance at life."

They needed us and we needed them. (Even if they weren't black! hehe) We immediately fell in love with them and tweaked their names slightly to Charlie and Ginger.

Charlie and Ginger have a big following on Instagram with over 6,000 followers. https://www.instagram.com/charlieandginger/

The babies turn five this summer and we will have a big pawty for them, like we do every year. We are very grateful to PAWS Montclair.

Clyde The Kitty has it pretty good-a forever home, toys, favorite feline foods and a lot of love from his human and fans, including the PAWS cat whisperer who found him about five years ago, thin, parasite-ridden and hungry wandering city streets. Happily, she introduced me to Clyde and a new tale began. PAWS does great work with purpose and no fanfare. It is a most wonderful nonprofit that does so much good.

PAWS cares a lot about the animals whom they rescue and the people who want to adopt a rescue dog or cat. PAWS staff were so careful about six years ago when I wanted to adopt my late beloved Ginger Kitty, Tang Poohzie. I was thoroughly checked and interviewed to see if Tang and I would be a good match--and for the six years of his life (he was a special needs cat) we were. After Tang died, I was connected with an adorable Ginger Kitty, Clyde, and it is my privilege to share and apartment with this rapidly growing kitten. PAWS does more than place the animal, they follow up and assure that the seemingly good match becomes a growing relationship. PAWS cares.

I started volunteering with PAWS almost 25 years ago because I was impressed with the compassion and care the organization provided the animals who entered its doors. PAWS has been able, with the help of its dedicated board members, volunteers, and supporters, to adapt to the challenges and changes it has faced over the years, and continue its founding mission to help homeless and abandoned animals. We provide the animals the best vet care possible, along with wonderful foster homes and sheltering while we look for the best possible homes for each of our animals. We are very thankful for our supporters and our volunteers. I am proud to be a part of this team, and look forward to our ongoing work in this community and surrounding areas.

I would give this organization 100 stars if I could. They are the most amazing, loving, kind hearted group of people I have ever met. A cat I had adopted through them a few years ago developed a health problem, and I was very distraught. I turned to PAWS for guidance on what to do and they immediately came to our aid. With their assistance I now have my pet back home with me healthy and happy. They literally saved his life. I truly believe had it not been for their help he would not be alive today. I will forever be indebted to them, and plan to donate my time in the future. If you are considering donating time or money I would highly recommend this non-profit. They are Angels on Earth and well deserving of your support.

I am a volunteer and board member of PAWS Montclair, and I am grateful that we can continue our mission of saving and helping abandoned animals in need. PAWS has been active in the community for almost 40 years! We often take animals that other rescues -- the older dogs and cats, those that need special medical care -- but we know there is a home out there for these animals. Many of our adopters stay in touch with us over the years. We are lucky to have a core group of volunteers and foster homes who are always there to help when needed.

I adopted my first PAWS cats in 1989 and have been involved ever since. This group is so dedicated and passionate about helping animals, and its mission remains to rescue, shelter, vet, and find great new homes for those animals who are abandoned and homeless. Aside from my duties of President of the Board, I manage the dog-side of our rescue, networking with other rescues, pulling dogs from death row at high kill facilities, sheltering and getting them to the vet, and preparing them for their new forever homes. We spend countless hours in many capacities -- hands on with the dogs, working with the trainer, meeting potential adopters, attending adoption events, screening every applicant and doing home visits to be sure our dogs find the home that best suits their needs. We also reach out to the community, helping with all types of dog-related issues, presenting to schools and other groups interested in our mission. There is no better feeling to us than when we leave the new adoptive home after the final home visit, as we know this dog, once marked for death at another facility, will live out his or her years with a loving family. Our cat group works very hard to do the same for the many cats and kittens they rescue and rehome, and they are at adoption events every weekend at several venues, and they are always answering calls, emails, and helping people wherever they can. I am proud of all the PAWS volunteers and board members all we have accomplished as a group, and I am very grateful to our supporters!

i am a volunteer for Pound animal Welfare Society of Montclair. I have volunteered for many non Profit Animal rescues in the past. What makes PAWS Of Montclair Special to me is that when I pick up there dogs at the meeting spots to pick up the rescued PAWS has pulled from these High Kill Shelters, they are dogs that have been overlooked because of there age, breed, looks, medical attention they might or will need etc. They are truly a great organization!! I see other rescue's there picking up puppies (very easily adopted by others because they are puppies) small breed dogs , young healthy dogs etc. PAWS rescues the old, the sick, large dogs pretty much a dog that others consider "non Adoptable" and gives these dogs a chance, where they do everything humanly possible to get the "throw aways" Non adoptables a good loving home something these dogs have never seen a good life they deserve. They go that extra mile for each and every dog in there care.

i have fostered dogs, adopted dogs, and worked with PAWS rescue group for years as a dog trainer/behavioral consultant, and from my experience, they are one of the VERY BEST rescues out there!

PAWS rescue group takes dogs that no one else takes from high kill shelters and from other rescue groups. They go above and beyond to make sure that they do the work necessary to get their dogs adoptable. i work with PAWS evaluating their dogs and working with any issues their dogs may have. i also do home visits and settle in sessions upon adoption. this alone has saved many adoptions! and if, for any reason, PAWS needs to take a dog back into their rescue, they do so quickly and without drama. they are wonderful and work with their foster families, giving their foster families as well as their foster dogs everything they need to be successful, happy and healthy. PAWS also works with the community, helping pet owners in need keep their beloved pets with them.

I first found PAWS through Petfinder when I was searching for a pet kitten. I contacted the organization and spoke to someone regarding my interest in the kitten. They kindly asked me to fill out the application and once I sent it in, it was reviewed and approved. The kittens were in a foster home a town over from mine and Kristina from the shelter asked me when I was available to pick them up. It was the day before Thanksgiving but I was SO excited, I asked if I could go see them then - she asked the foster and the foster said yes! I went to her house and it was very clean and spacious - perfect for kittens to run around! She let them out, and I picked out the only male available, his name was Blue. The foster asked Kristina if I was allowed to take the kitten that night and she said yes, he was old enough to go home. So surprisingly, I got to take my kitten home! I kept in contact with Kristina from PAWS for a couple of weeks and they were immensely helpful and made the transition so much easier for my kitten. They gave me so much information about kitten care and the types of litter and food they were already on and how to change them onto different food if needed. Another great thing about my PAWS experience is that my kitten needed veterinary care within the first couple of weeks of having him and they actually paid for the vaccinations and medications needed. It was an amazing beginning to my life with Blue (I kept his name ) and he is a friendly, happy and snuggly cat! Thank you PAWS!!

I reached out to PAWS because I was hoping to one day adopt a cat but wasn't sure if I was ready to commit to caring for one for a lifetime and also wasn't sure if I was cut out for it. I had never owned a cat in my adult life, but had one as a child. I filled out an application including all of this information and Kristina, a rescue volunteer, quickly reached out to me. She called me, asked me what qualities I was looking for in a new housemate. She said she had the perfect cat in mind and boy was she right. My cat Sebastian was Ferral, born in the wild but found early on. When I met him he was a year and a half and had already been through many many foster homes simply because he doesn't get along with other cats. She warned me that he bites sometimes, but in a playful way. I took him home that day and I have never been more grateful. Kristina texted me everyday asking for photos and updates on how he was doing. I really felt like I could (and did) call her anytime of the day for advice if I needed it. A few months after I took him home, he was trying to pee on the floor and he couldn't. He wasn't crying, seemed ok otherwise, but I figured (at 10:00pm on a Wednesday) I should probably mention it to Kristina just to be sure it's not something serious. She tells me to my total and utter surprise that he has to go to the animal hospital immediately and could die if we wait until morning. And according to the Vet, he would've. If I didn't have Kristina, Sebastian would have died. She was so welcoming and attentive to me and Sebastian, that I felt comfortable bothering her about something that seemed so insignificant. It's her kindness and caring attitude that saved my cats life. The personal attention PAWS gives to their animals even after they're gone is incredible, and it saved my cats life. I am eternally grateful and proud to call my kitty a PAWS Pet, because they're the best kind.
