Mission: The mission of the portland art museum is to engage the public with art and film of enduring quality, to facilitate dialogue with diverse audiences, and to collect, preserve and educate for the enrichment of present and future generations.

the museum's northwest film center conducts an active film and video exhibition program, screening more than 500 films during the year, including the 40 year old portland international film festival with annual attendance of nearly 40,000, and annual northwest filmmakers festival of work by regional independent filmmakers. The film center operates the oldest and most comprehensive community-based film school in oregon, offering classes and visiting artist programs to 500 emerging artists, educators and avocational adult learners throughout the year. It also has one of the premiere youth media programs in the nation, providing camps and classes to more than 600 youth each year, conducting community outreach projects which use filmmaking to empower underserved and minority youth, and through its global classroom film series, offering free screenings of curriculum-rich international films to nearly 4,000 high school students each school year.
museum education programs aim to broaden and deepen access to exhibitions and the collections, and to facilitate visitors' learning about art both on and offsite. Last year, one-third of all visitors attended for free or reduced price admission, including all children under age 17. The museum also presented 113 public programs, including lectures, artist talks, and tours, and the northwest film center hosted more than 100 visiting artists.
