Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Employment Preparation & Procurement, Job Training, Vocational Counseling

Mission: PVJOBS was founded in 1998 and grew out of the developer's commitment to provide 10% of all construction labor to at-risk youth and adults. A group of community activists and leaders were called together and asked to formulate a plan for achieving this commitment. Out of these meetings, PVJOBS (a nonprofit organization) was born. Located on the 1,087-acre former Hughes Aircraft site in West Los Angeles, the development plans include the construction of over 13,000 residential units, over 5.1 million sq. ft. of commercial space, and 340 acres of fully restored wetlands and uplands habitat. Because of the scale of the project, projections indicate that the developer's 10% commitment translates into over 3,500 positions available to our local at-risk population through PVJOBS during the construction life of the project. All contractors are required to sign contract language mandating PVJOBS compliance.

Results: PVJOBS partners with more than 130 community-based organizations which refer candidates for placement. Participants must be referred from a collaborating agency. PVJOBS has nearly 16,000 active, job-ready candidates in its database. Since 1998, the program has filled more than 7,000 positions with a retention rates of 89%.

Target demographics: persons who have barriers to employment: e.g. homelessness; no high school diploma; involvement with the justice system; and/or receiving welfare.

Direct beneficiaries per year: hundreds of participants, including veterans, at-risk youth, community college students and other county residents with internships and job placement services.

Geographic areas served: L.A. County

Programs: job placement and career track employment opportunities, primarily in the construction and construction-related industries.

Playa Vista Jobs has assited and helped many of our clients gain training, employment, and careers in the construction field. Playa Vista is a very professional and unique organization that focus on all those that have severe barriers. Not many agencies concentrate in the underserve population, but for Playa Vista is heir bread and butter. I will continue to volunteer and support their program because they make our job much easier and our clients get to transition to a positive place. Many of our clients became self sufficient because they got a career after attending Playa Vista Job Opportunities and Business Servces.

Thank you,

Much ado is made about "second chance" and there is great validity to that. And in the ex-offender populatrion served by PV-JOBS, it is often true that this is an actual "first chance" for clients to be offered a true and real opportunity for job training, placement and supportive services. The impact of acheived self-sufficiency is immeasurable beyond the metrics of income and job placement.

The "learn and earn" offered by the trades are underused tools to strenghtning the middle income job levels slowly wasting away in this country because of the lack of attention of that value. As well, the dignity of work has little to do with job titles, the dignity comes from being a productive, contributing member of our communities of need.

PVJOBS is the greatest non-profit there is. PVJOBS is a place that really provides a second chance to at risk individuals that have made and learned from a mistake they made in life. If you are a hard working person that is willing to do what it takes to earn that second chance in life then PVJOBS is the place for you. I came into PVJOBS looking for a second chance and thank God I got it. Now I'm able to help others do the same, it feels good to be able to give hope to those that so many have closed the door on due to having a criminal record. PVJOBS is a blessing to many.

PVJOBS has been very influential in the community. They are one of the non-profits that truly believes in their mission to help others and it shows in the way they interact with the people they help. It is great to see that there is an organization out there that does exactly what they say they will do. It is rare and it is much needed

PVJOBS is a transformative organization and program formed to provide local employment opportunities for at-risk individuals. Since the organization launched in 1998 it has helped thousands of people get jobs or internships, plus training. Many have launched new careers and some of started their own businesses. A high percentage of them have experience in the criminal justice system and PVJOBS has provided an opportunity for them to turn their lives around. Helping to launch and remaining involved with PVJOBS has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.
