Mission: The PlanetQuest Mission: To inspire the people of the world with the thrill of individual discovery, a better understanding of our uniquely precious planet, and a wider perspective on our place in the universe.
Programs: The PlanetQuest project started in 1999 as a response to two important problems: - Education in math and the sciences is generally lacking the world over, particularly in North America We think that educating the next generation of deep thinkers all over the world should be a top priority. PlanetQuest draws on world-renowned expertise to offer you a variety of ways to learn about history, science, mathematics, and other topics and to measure your progress over time. We also offer free lesson plans to schools and suggestions on how to introduce the PlanetQuest Browser into primary and secondary curriculums. For undergraduate and graduate students, we offer appropriate resources and tools for hands-on experimentation, and we offer a wide variety of exciting internships - the ultimate hands-on learning opportunity! We are educators first and foremost here at PlanetQuest, regardless of the other hats we wear. - There are few datasets capable of revealing new planets and no reasonable way to analyze such datasets for star analysis and planet detection. We saw great potential in distributed computing that creates large virtual networks by using the spare computational power of simple desktop computers connected to the internet. In addition, PlanetQuest managers led several scientific teams that have produced world-recognized breakthroughs in planet detection by carefully looking at long time series datasets. We want to take distributed computing and astronomy to new levels by combining our expertise to build the world's largest astronomical observatory, include everyone in making discoveries, and excite people about science and astronomy. Our major programs include educational content development, astronomical observing and data collection, software development, publications, and original related research.
