Mission: To support students as they learn and advocate for informed choices by bridging the lessons they learn in their classrooms to the foods on their lunch trays, at home, and in their communities. We empower teachers to weave food standards into their academic lessons to facilitate the seamless delivery of food education to children in grades Pre-K to 12. Our vision is to create a world of knowledgeable and engaged changemakers for an equitable, sustainable, and accessible food future.
Results: In the past ten years: 12,000+ students have engaged in Pilot Light food education lessons 230+ teachers have received Pilot Light professional development and training 120+ food advocacy projects completed impacting over 2,500 community members 1,200+ Pilot Light food education lessons taught across Chicago 200+ Pilot Light food education lessons written by teachers for teachers through professional development
Target demographics: integrate comprehensive food values and knowledge into core academic curriculum and Effectively sharing the positive power of food choices on students’ own lives, families and communities
Direct beneficiaries per year: over 7,000 children build on their food knowledge and experiences through lessons in core subjects that teachers are already teaching. Simultaneously, students learn about food and how it connects us to ourselves, our communities, and our world.
