Programs: The publication of the "historian" journal and "the newsletter" journal. These publications disseminate historical information. The organization provides financial assistance to students that assist in the production of these periodicals. Approximate membership is 15,000 to 20,000. The organization receives royalties from publishers and from websites with respect to sales of the "historian" journal to libraries and other non-members.

Encourages the study of history by providing recognition to students, graduates, and faculty for their membership in the organization through the sale of small items with the organization's logo to show membership in the organization at graduation and other events.

the organization has an agreement with the university of south florida ("usf") under which it uses on-campus facilities for its offices. The executive director of the organization is also a senior lecturer with the history department of usf. The executive director, and his administrative assistant, are employees of both usf and the society. In return for the use of the office facilities, as well as to support the study of history, the organization provides an annual grant to usf. The amount of the grant is based on the salary and benefit costs incurred by usf with respect to the executive director of the society, and with respect to his administrative assistant. The grant amount for the current year is $175,840. The grant is divided into occupancy expense, grant expense, and wages and employee benefits in this return.
