Mission: To further by all appropriate means the study, appreciation and oral and written interpretation of the history of the region of the pettaquamscutt purchase of 1658; to foster the acquisition and preservation of collections of historic interest; and to encourage the preservation and marking of historic sites.
Programs: The pettaquamscutt historical society operates a year-round history museum, archive and geneaology library in the 1858/1861 old washington county jail in kingston, ri. The society is also charged with the perpetual care of two historical burial grounds: the 1792 potter family burial ground in kingston, ri and the 18th century quaker burying ground in wakefield, ri. The society sponsors educational and cultural programs including lectures, walking tours, exhibitions, films and musical performances as well as exhibitions on off-site locations on occasion. The society provides educational programs for students in elementary and secondary school, and offers internship opportunities for college and graduate students.
