Mission: Performing Arts Workshop ignites young minds by teaching critical thinking, creative expression and basic learning skills through the arts. With an approach focused on a comprehensive arts experience, the Workshop brings the arts to youth who otherwise might not receive them. Programs: The Artists-in-Schools (AIS) program places artists in public school classrooms, where they use the performing arts to develop children's creativity & critical thinking skills specifically in the areas of: pro-social behavior, peer critique, artistic vocabulary, and participation. In addition to residencies based on Creative Movement, Creative Writing, Theatre Arts, World Dance & World Music, AIS includes specialized programs for special education, English language learners, and preschool students. The Artists-in-Community (AIC) program places artists in transitional housing facilities, juvenile detention centers, and after-school program settings. The AIC program aims to engage at-risk and disenfranchised young people with multicultural arts programming that builds critical thinking & communication skills, specifically in: self-efficacy, cultural understanding, and community & social issues. All Workshop programs focus on leadership, relationships, and focus & concentration using critical thinking and creative expression to get at these skills. The Workshop also teaches educators how to integrate the creative process into their teaching in order to foster critical thinking, creative expression, and self-esteem in students of all ages and abilities. The Workshop's Internships train professional artists to teach the creative process using the Workshop's unique, time-tested methodology.
