Use caution when applying. I remember when I first heard about the new apartment complex they were building, it seemed like it was going to be an incredible opportunity
see article: https://www.sanluisobispo.com/news/local/article263900922.html
They promised income based rents with the highest rents being about $1,100, but in reality it couldn't be further from the truth.
Rent for a 1 bedroom is about $1,200. This can't be more than 40% of your income upon move in or you'll be rejected.
The application process is also incredibly long! I applied on Aug 1st 2022, and now, over a year later, I've not been approved nor have I been giving any sort of timeline as to when I can expect to hear any news or what my application status is.
They also take a sizable deposit ($600 in my case) that they cash months in advanced. Mine was cashed months ago and I still don't know if I got an apartment or not. This deposit is non refundable if you withdraw your application. So, if you get tired of this waiting game and want to withdraw your application to rent somewhere else, expect to lose your entire deposit.
This policy is extremely unethical especially when marketing towards low income and potentially homeless individuals. If your current lease ends before you hear back from PSHH, what do you do? If you sign another year long lease, then a few months later PSHH finally responds telling you, you got the apartment, you either break your current lease and probably lose a sizable chunk of you deposit, or reject the PSHH offer in which you'd lose your entire deposit. $600 is a lot of money to make non refundable, especially when it apparently takes over a year to get any decision made on your application.
So now here I sit, 8 days before my non extendable lease ends, deciding if it's better to become homeless and wait to hear back from PSHH, or start trying to find a new place to rent, and know I'll be losing $600.
Thank you PSHH for your unwavering efforts in keeping the poor homeless.
Hi,
I am buying land in SLO county to house the homeless with tiny houses, full utilities, infrastructure, and amenities for free.
I am trying to get county homeless grants (our application is due by the 23rd of August) to pay for what we need, but we do not have a 501 ( c ) (3) or 501 ( c ) (4) license. We would like to work with people who can submit a joint application and receive some of the grant money to help house the homeless.
Thank you.

I am a single parent building my dream home with the help of Peoples' Self-Help Housing Corp. From the very beginning they were incredibly helpful and sincerely cared for me and my family. I never had a moment where they didn't keep me informed about where I was in the process and what was coming next. They are always there when I have a question. From the office staff to the Construction Supervisors to the CEO, they are all wonderful people. My supervisor, Joe, is always available to help, giving guidance or just listening. He taught me how to measure, how to use different types of saws and power tools. I feel confident and empowered by this process. I know that if I can build a house, I can do just about anything. This is possible because of the dedication of the amazing staff at PSHHC!
People's Self Help Housing is one of the few options our community has for high quality housing affordable to low income residents, both rentals & home ownership. It, however, goes well beyond building housing; People's builds communities. It recognizes that many low income families sometimes face emergencies that threaten their ability to stay in their homes. People's is there for them. The home ownership, sweat equity program is often the only way low income families can become home owners. As the neighbors join together to build their homes People's gives the technical expertise to build the building. As importantly they build relationships that will create a strong and safe community for years to come. People's truly does live its mission to provide housing and services leading to self sufficiency for its clients.
