Imagine being in a situation that not only frightens you, but also threatens those who associate with you. Now imagine that the situation that you are facing, you are facing it alone. Your friends and family are advising you to let it go, move on, you get the gist of what I am saying.
You happen across an organization in your community that not only listens to you, comforts you and advises you.
They believe in you and understand your circumstance...
You know why? They "PUEBLO" have been there, being the VOICE of those who have no voice.
This what a Direct Advocacy Group does. They advocate for those who cannot, those who do not know how to advocate for themselves, those who lack specific knowledge or are intimidated by the powers that be. And last but not least, it is the right thing to do...
PUEBLO is the essential keeper of the community responsibility for police reform in Oakland. At PUEBLO gatherings one rubs elbows with many long-time social justice activists and professionals, including judges, defense attorneys, the ACLU and especially ordinary citizens who are possibly the most important part of PUEBLO. I've been particularly touched by the insight and tenacity of these ordinary citizens who have been very close to police problems and whose perspectives are critical to PUEBLO's work and to Oakland's moving forward.
