The pennsylvania horticulturial society connects people with horticulture and together we create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities.
Programs: The philadelphia flower show is a nine-day event featuring horticultural exhibits and educational programs. It is the oldest and largest annual indoor flower show in the world attracting over 250,000 people. Proceeds from the show help support the society's greening programs.
phs's greening program has been a noted force in urban revitalization since 1974 and serves as a national model for transforming communities through horticulture. Together we create beautiful, healthy and sustainable communities. We engage urban gardeners and entrepreneurial growers at 150 gardens to make fresh nutritious produce available for neighbors in need. We've trained 2,339 garden tenders and 904 educators to start community gardens and school greening projects as well as build the community and networks needed for sustained stewardship. Partnering with the city of philadelphia, we clean, green and maintain over 12,000 lots across the city, turning blighted lots into neighborhood assets. Through training and networking, we've helped over 112 people find meaningful employment when returning to the community after incarceration. We've trained 4,753 tree tenders to plant and take care of trees, and together with our partners, we've planted over 538,000 trees in the region. Under contract with the philadelphia water department, we have installed 1,652 rain barrels and provided stormwater management education to 4,024 residents. We maintain more than 100 acres of high-profile public landscapes across philadelphia utilzing organic land care practices, and our urban design team has transformed city parks and recreation centers.
phs's educational programs provide horticultural information and training to members, volunteers and other constituents in the phildelphia region through workshops, lectures, tours, events and publications. It includes one of the largest horticultural libraries in the country with nearly 15,000 volumes.
