The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA has been an amazing place to volunteer! The friendly, caring & knowledgeable staff are always there to help answer any questions or concerns that I may have. I've gotten to know other volunteers over the years, who I now consider my friends! Working with wildlife is super rewarding! Helping to save the life of a wild animal is a wonderful feeling. Whether it's syringe feeding baby squirrels, cleaning out enclosures or preparing meals, it's all fulfilling & fun! Even better, is when they are ready to be released back into the wild! I'm so grateful that I've gotten the opportunity to release many animals. Not only does SPCA allow me to work in the hospital & release animals, but they've also given me the opportunity to be a part of their Outreach Program to spread the word as to what we do & how important it is to help wildlife. The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is an amazing organization that saves thousands of lives each year! If you find a sick, injured or orphaned animal, please give them a call!
It really is difficult to put into words how wonderful this organization is. The opportunity to volunteer amongst other like minded individuals is refreshing. The care and dedication to our local wildlife is above and beyond any expectations you could think of. The "patients" in care are really cared for, each one getting everything they need. Volunteering here has been not only educational but fulfilling. The volunteers have dedicated training and on going hands on education. The staff are knowledgeable and supportive, which makes volunteering here something I look forward to.
My volunteer experience at the Peninsula Humane Society has been excellent.
The staff members are incredibly supportive and knowledgeable, and the facility is well-maintained, clean and organized.
I have volunteered with Peninsula Humane Society and SPCA since the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley became a part of the organization over a year ago. During this transition, I have had the pleasure of working with some great people from the Peninsula Humane Society and continue to hold the staff that moved from the Wildlife Center of Silicon Valley to Peninsula Humane in the highest regard for their commitment to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and release.
PHS/SPCA has been a long-standing organization that has benefited Bay Area residents for years. Growing up in the Bay, I've used many of their services ranging from pet adoption, medical services, spay/neuter, etc. A fond childhood memory I have was when I contacted PHS about an injured mourning dove I had found. PHS staff and the Animal Control Officer were extremely compassionate, I was amazed that someone came all the way out to help something as small as an injured dove. That memory really stuck with me and fueled my love for wildlife conservation/rehabilitation.
Fast forward many years later - as a 3 year PHS Wildlife Caretaker Volunteer, I get immense fulfillment and joy in caring for the variety of wildlife that come into our hands. We care for sick, injured, and orphaned animals year-round and help with recovery in hopes of eventual release back into their natural habitat. The PHS/SPCA staff and volunteers are extremely dedicated and passionate - the organization wouldn't be what it is today without any of them. I'm honored to be a part of an enduring organization that benefits so many.
This pet food bank is so helpful. Their monthly assistance provides essential food for my cat Lucy and dog Ricky. I'm deeply grateful for their support, which allows me to keep my beloved pets well-fed. On behalf of Lucy, Ricky, and myself: thank you for your generous help each month. It means more than you know.
I have many options on where to volunteer my time and I've chosen PHS-SPCA for over 10 years. That's a testament to their genuine dedication to the well-being of the animals in their care. Much of what they do, decisions and even design of the facilities are made with the animals in mind. Additionally, the staff are responsive to needs of the volunteers, taking into consideration their strengths and preferences of types of tasks and projects. Even though I have relocated away from the area, I still make it a point to give my time to PHS-SPCA when I'm back in the Bay Area.
Volunteering at PHS-SPCA is a wonderful experience for so many reasons. There is ample opportunity to provide varying levels of enrichment activities for the resident pups. Also, it’s mutually rewarding getting to play a direct role towards increasing the adoptability of the pups in our care. From afternoon walks to play & romps in the yard to reading & quiet socialization in their condos, time spent at the PHS-SPCA facility is truly one of best ways to spend time volunteering!
I have been volunteering with the Peninsula Humane Society for almost two years and have enjoyed educating and interacting with the public at outreach events. I also volunteer with the therapy dogs and the libraries program, Paws for Tales, working with the children as they read to the dogs. I have found my time with the PHS rewarding and am glad that I can give back to a worthwhile agency that treats and respects all types of animals with compassion and care.
First time long term volunteer since Sept of 2023. I have nothing but nice things to say about this non-profit Peninsula Humane Society SPCA The Staff members are always friendly & knowledgeable in their field of expertise. I volunteer with dogs right now. The training they provide to the volunteers is excellent & informative. They also have extracurricular canine enrichment classes for the shelter animals & volunteers on certain days & it does help improve the volunteers knowledge. The scheduling is very flexible. The staff members that work here really care about the shelter animals. I would keep volunteering here since I do enjoy working with animals on my days off. Volunteering here far exceeds my personal expectations.
The SPCA is such a unique nonprofit organization, and it's essential to convey this. One word that would fit perfectly as a description is diligence. All the staff members and volunteers are lovely. Their determination is apparent, and they've cultivated many people (including me) to become assiduities while volunteering. It's significant to address that when there is a misunderstanding or obstacles, they meticulously work their way through to find ultimate success. The SPCA wouldn't be standing if not for the aiding members and volunteers who stay committed and loyal.
I volunteer to walk and care for dogs at the Peninsula Humane Society once a week. It is a great organization to work with because of their excellent facility, organization, communications, and staff members. We do our best to help care for the dogs, relieve their stress, and get them adopted!
I have so enjoyed my volunteer work with the Wildlife department at the SPCA. The positive energy of the staff and their infinite patience when I repeatedly ask questions week after week keeps me motivated to continue to help the animals that come in.
Being a foster volunteer for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is pretty much amazing. From the moment I joined, I realized that I was becoming a part of a compassionate and enthusiastic community dedicated to saving and improving the lives of animals in need.
The support and guidance provided by the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA team have been exceptional. They go above and beyond to ensure I have the resources and information I need to be a successful foster parent. They also foster a sense of belonging by hosting a volunteer appreciation event and with their personal notes for birthdays and anniversaries. Their commitment is unwavering.
The foster animals themselves are absolutely wonderful and have taught me as much as the humans of PHS & SPCA. Each one comes with their own unique personality and untold story. It brings me pure joy to see them transform and gain trust in humans through the love and care they receive. Being able to witness their progress and help them on their journey to finding a forever home is an experience that I’m so happy to be a part of.
I'm a cat TLC volunteer at the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA since 2006. The Lantos Center for Compassion in Burlingame, California is beautiful!! Cats in large condo rooms on the 3rd floor. Dogs on the first floor, wildlife on 2nd floor and a kitten nursery on the 2nd floor during kitten season.
There are plenty healthy food and toys for cats, volunteers including me give TLC to cats and kittens.
The dedicated staff are doing a great job finding forever homes for all animals. The staff are friendly, professional, knowledgeable and compassionate. the center has camps for kids in the summer.
I'm very happy and enjoying to be a volunteer at PHS & SPCA.

I've been a cat TLC volunteer at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA since 2006. The Lantos Center for Compassion is beautiful! Cheerful, clean rooms and plenty of healthy food for the cats and kittens on the 3rd floor waiting for adoption. Some cats stayed for over a year till the great adoption staff found them forever homes. PHS & SPCA is dedicated to animal welfare. It follows CDC COVID recommendation/protocol and keep safe environment for everyone.
The staff are friendly, professional, knowledgeable and they appreciated volunteers. The center has summer camps for kids in the summer. I'm happy and enjoying volunteer at Peninsula Humane Society.
Most often, the lines are really long, but the staff is always very helpful, courteous, friendly as best as they can be while working hard to get the lines moving as quickly as possible.
I feel they are organized and they have their system in place
so that families can get back home to take care of their pet family members.
Thank you to the staff members, the many helping hands and to all the wonderful people who donate food and other supplies. I know I do appreciate this. I have been receiving this help since February this year!
It does make a difference!
This organization has amazing people working together to provide care and essential services for animals in need . The exceptional commitment that they give is an important asset for this community.
We are super grateful to this organization for providing food for our pet as times are tough, and every little donation helps. Thank you to the staff for accommodating our requests whenever possible and for running this program. Our pandemic cat thanks you.
The organization has given my retired
Mother the opportunity to keep her cats because of the support she receives from this great place!
The people are great and eager to help.
Great experience! I’m so thankful for the dog food I received. It will be of great help. The gentleman handing out the food was very friendly and helpful.
Brian is very professional and pleasant to associate with.
The staff is doing everything to make sure that you have a pleasant experience.
They’re making sure that you get the preferred food and help that you need!
Professional and well organized!
Peninsula Humane is top notch! Team members are friendly, courteous, helpful and go above and beyond to help their community and communities around them. PHS often pulls underage foster kittens from local municipal shelters, who otherwise might not have the resources to care for those babies, and in turn provides necessary veterinary care, spay/neuter, and microchip identification for a low adoption fee. The Pick of the Litter location provides donation-based pet food and litter to low income families. The team consists of volunteers and PHS staff, all of whom work hard to make sure each individual receives a warm welcome and supplies to better care for their pets when times are tough. I couldn’t be any happier with service experience and community resources offered.

PHS does wonders for the community through outreach, education, rescue, and providing community members support to care for their pets. I’ve had the opportunity to recommend their services to many people, before using them myself. PHS has been able to aid and care for many orphaned neonatal kittens, provide medical and get them into foster, no questions asked. They are super supportive, friendly and always willing to lend a helping hand. I recently needed to use their food pantry due to financial hardship and was welcomed by two of the nicest people. Being a first timer, I was nervous and wasn’t certain of where to go, who to talk to, where to park etc, but PHS staff were very kind and made the process really easy for me. I had a great experience and appreciate the effort they made to make me feel comfortable and welcomed.
When the Covid pandemic and lockdowns started I was already on disability and struggling to keep my family and pets fed.
There was an understandable process to check and verify our information to help provide us with pet food but Brian Probst was very helpful and reliable in communicating about it to help us get started . Ever since they have been a valuable source in keeping our pets healthy and well fed in a friendly and reliable way.

I've had the pleasure of volunteering for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA over the past several years in different capacities. In my current role, I volunteer as part of the Paws for Tales Pet Assistant Therapy team at the Half Moon Bay Library. It's been gratifying to see hesitant and reserved children enthusiastically read to our therapy dog, strengthen their reading skills, and enjoy watching cool tricks after. They walk away happy and eager to come again!
This program, as well as the other great programs and services PHS/SPCA offers, make it a top-notch non-profit for animal welfare.
After many years of volunteering with dog activities at PHS, I think the staff do an excellent job. Staff at all levels of expertise show kindness and compassion for the animals, dedicated to caring for the animals. They work hard, remaining positive and upbeat, frequently taking the time to give a hello to an animal as they pass by. PHS provides full opportunity for volunteers to help/spend time with many kinds of animals at the shelter waiting for new homes.
I’ve been volunteering at PHS since 2019, and have really enjoyed being able to work with the dogs and visit the other animals on a regular basis. We even volunteered through the thick of the pandemic! The PHS has lots of educational programs for the public, and also trains the volunteers well. As a volunteer, I’ve participated in clicker training, happy hellos, enrichment training, and also 2nd chance training, where we help dogs with their behavior and manners so they are more adoptable. We apply these skills to the dogs we work with so they are mentally stimulated, have practice and exposure, and are ready for their new homes. It’s wonderful to be able to care for the animals in this transitional period before they find their forever homes. Each dog has certain circumstances that brought them to the shelter, and at PHS they all receive love, compassion, care, and the opportunity to meet their next family. The volunteer program is very well run and I’m so happy to be a part of the community, and grateful to have the opportunity to make a small but positive contribution in the life of these animals.
In addition to animal adoptions & providing medical care for the homeless animals that come through their door, they have a free pet food bank, a low cost vaccination and spay clinic, behavior classes for the public, and many other programs; I appreciate what the organization does to advocate for animals and make pet care more affordable and available to local families and their pets.
Peninsula Humane Society is a lifesaver for me and my cat. I’m on social security and without the pet foodbank I don’t know how I’d feed my treasured pet.
I've been volunteering for PHS for years but up until this year it's been on a periodic basis. In 2022 I took the cat orientation class so that I could begin regularly photographing the cats available for adoption. I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience -- especially getting to know the adoption counselors and staff that care for the animals. I adopted my cat there over a decade ago and knew the care was really good but now I can speak from having seen it firsthand that it is indeed extraordinary. The animals are really well tended and this gives them a much better chance being adopted.
PHS has been a mainstay in our community for as long as I can recall. PHS has been the go-to for our family for generations for pet adoptions, wildlife help, education and volunteer opportunities. From birds, to goats, I have witnessed PHS treat all animals with the most thoughtful and thorough care possible.
I have been a PHS member for many years . I began Volunteering in 2019. I am a member of the Cat TLC Team. I have been impressed with PHS since day 1 of orientation and training in regard to prepping the Volunteers for our Care assignments. The Cats ( and all the Animals ) are in a safe, clean and caring environment. From Adoption Specialists, vet techs , back office, Management and Volunteers, everyone know their role and works collaboratively in the best interest of the animals and to put them in the best position to thrive in finding a furrever Family and to love and be loved in that Family The hours I volunteer are some of the best hours of my week. I have adopted 3 Times over the Years at PHS. Below is a picture of Pumpkin ( formerly Oats ) on Adoption Day 2015
Pumpkin is happy ruling the roost at my home. PHS is great organization
That I am proud to support and be a part of in my small way.
I have been volunteering at the Peninsula Humane Society for 10 years. I feel honored to be part of such a caring and compassionate organization. My two golden retrievers have served in The Pet Assisted Therapy Program bringing comfort to so many people ranging from young students to elderly. The Paws for Tails program at the libraries has helped so many struggling students gain confidence in their reading skills. The visits at the Assisted Living have eased loneliness and depression bringing a sense of well being to not only the residence but to myself as well. Being a part of such an impactful program has been so rewarding for me personally and has improved my own sense of well being. I feel so grateful, each visit is uplifting for both me and my dog. It brings us joy and happiness!
My dog, Cate, and I are part of the Pet Assisted Therapy(PAT) program. We have been volunteering for the PHS for almost 4 years. This organization is amazing to everyone who volunteers. The kindness and compassion they show the animals warms my heart. The staff is very helpful and thankful for the volunteer programs. As part of the PAT, we go to libraries; children read to the dogs, schools(elementary, high school, and colleges); to help destress students and we offer an education component, assisted living facilities, special events, and companies(wellness events). I am thankful we are a part of this wonderful organization.
While I volunteer for a number of non-profits, my time working at the pet food bank for the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA makes such an impactful and wonderful difference in many lives, including those of our beautiful pets!
My time is spent helping a small amazing team provide essential pet products to wonderful pet owners needing some extra help during difficult times.
The operation is safe (masks etc), very busy, and absolutely a blast!
I volunteer here bc I knew of food banks for people and worried about those same issues for the pets of our society. Now I can make a difference for those lucky pets in my neighborhood!
Thank you Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for what you do in the community and the awesome way you help!
My experience with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA has been amazing! The program Paws for Tales which I am a volunteer brings theraphy dogs to libraries so kids can read for them. It is so important for children to get in touch with animals and learn how to treat them and how incredible they are. Besides, of course, the encouragement to read.
Within the community, PHS has improved the lives of countless animals. I have volunteered in two different departments and have been continuously impressed with the high level of attention and care this organization delivers.
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Pet Food Bank has been wonderful for me. Ever since the pandemic, they've been offering pet food for those in need. I have 2 cats, plus I feed many homeless cats, so I am in need of plenty of cat food. The Pet Food Bank has been a savior. They are always generous, friendly, and helpful. Kudos to the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for continuing this service!

This nonprofit is amazing! Communication is clear and thorough. They’ve adjusted their hours of pickup to better assist those that have returned to work during the weekdays. They provide a month’s supply. So no need to visit weekly or even biweekly to pick up.
Peninsula Humane Society has helped my family out a lot since the pandemic started. We have a large family with five children and four dogs. Brian and the rest of the staff are always so cheerful and kind.
This is such a excellent society ! Such a wonderful help for my pets during these hard times ! I am so very grateful for their generously and they are always so helpful ! What a wonderful organization in the Bay Area and I am so happy to be a Pet Food Bank Client !
This is a fabulous charity. I am a 74-year-old low income Senior who loves her large dog more than anything in the world. I am able to get free food for myself due to my low income, but my dog has food allergies and cannot share my food with me. My dog is large, so he requires a substantial amount of food to maintain his weight. God Bless the workers, volunteers and generous donors at the Peninsula Humane Society for caring enough to help me feed my boy.
The Peninsula Humane Society pet food bank has been a life saver during these challenging times. All of the staff and volunteers are friendly, kind and compassionate people. I also want to thank everyone for their donations to this program. You are truly helping people be able to care for their fur babies. ⬛
A friend kindly made me aware of the SPCA pet food bank. It has been a Godsend for me and for a divorced friend of mine on a limited budget with 2 petite dogs. The food bank has generously accommodated the needs of our pets in particular my friend whose dogs are on the small side. When I realized the kibble was too large, Brian and the volunteers exchanged the food for smaller sized dogs. Thank you very much the food provision it is a blessing during these financially challenging times.
As a proud cat mama of a once feral kitten bottle fed and nursed by volunteers with Peninsula Humane Society, I can not say enough about their valiant efforts to help lost, stray and abandoned animals find loving homes. I am disabled and adopted my cat as a therapy animal to combat my PTSD. I spoke at a mental health event for Peninsula during Mental Health Awareness month about the healing love of an animal. Due to my limited income they also help me monthly with litter and food donations. This really helps me out. Please consider adopting an animal and giving it a forever home. They bring so much love and sunshine into your life.
I am so thankful for all their help durin the past year and a half!! I would have probably not been able to care for my pets without their help!
I have been a volunteer here for about 10 years with a Covid vacation. I have made many friends with other volunteers who have the same passions and interests as I do. I also have strong connections with many of the personnel. Just like most places there are a few unpleasant people, but too few to mention. I always feel welcomed and appreciated. I also feel like I am doing a much needed job whether I am walking a dog, scooping up poop indoors or out, doing computer work or sitting and loving my own rescued cat and dog.
The option of jobs is vast and can give you a comfortable fit or a challenging stretch. I highly recommend this place for a great volunteer experience and opportunity.
I have volunteered at PHS/SPCA for 2 years now, and it has been the most rewarding volunteer experience. I lost my dog 2 years ago and volunteering at PHS has filled a great void in my life (get my weekly dog fix), while at the same time helping all of those animals in need. The staff and volunteers at PHS care very much for their cause, and the animals and their environment they live in prior to adoption is amazing, not to mention their adoption rate which is off the charts! Great job PHS - you have a volunteer for life!
I was in a hard pressed situation as I had my 95 year old mom's cat and two kittens that were displaced by the recent fires...they were so kind and caring...VERY HELPFUL...LIFE SAVERS!!!
Peninsula Humane Society stepped up during a time of great need in this community, providing free dog & cat food. The process was easy from sign-up to pickup. They kept safety in mind through the distribution, were always helpful and warm and accommodated special requests. They took something that could be incredibly stressful and scary and made life better for pet owners and pets. Nicely done. THANK YOU!!
LOVE PHS & SPCA! Great place to volunteer. So many opportunities. Even in COVID times.
I have been a volunteer for over 10 years! I used to be member of the cat TLC team and volunteered at fundraiser events like the fashion show and fun run. Then I got a fur baby of my own. Rusty, a miniature golden doodle with a heart of gold. He and I went through extensive training, some at PHS & SPCA, and are now a certified Pet Assisted Therapy Team (PAT).
Rusty and I have been volunteering for 3 years. We have found our niche visiting a hospital, a memory care facility, a women's shelter, wellness days at companies and stress relief on college campuses during exams. There are many other opportunities for PAT teams, including visiting prisons, psych wards, and having children read to the dog at local libraries. There is something for everyone. The healing power of animals is well documented.
Rusty knows he is going "to work" when I put on his bandana or vest. He is very proud. Rusty's job is to give love and receive love. What a job!! Rusty has a business card. How awesome it that?! People really do enjoy having this card as a memory of our visit.
During COVID we have participated in a couple virtual events. No, it is not the same, but we are happy to make people smile.
The PHS staff I deal with on a regular basis are rockstars! I am so grateful for the support from Marivic, Brian and Larkin.
I highly recommend PHS & SPCA as a place to volunteer.
Brian Probst and his exceptional staff have generously assisted our family over the past 6 months since the pandemic started. They have provided much needed relief to our two cats and dog with pet food donations. This has been a tremendously assistance to our family during the difficult times 2020 has presented.
We are grateful for the warmth, care and concern we experience from Brian and his staff.
We graciously thank Peninsula Humane Society for the love and support provided to our family .
I have been volunteering as a dog walker at PHS/SPCA since 2016. What stands out to me about this organization is the staff's love and care for the animals. There is great concern for the animals' welfare, and lots of love, connection and happiness being shared between humans and other animals. I love volunteering here and being part of this altruistic organization.
We are part of the PAWs program. Marivic is a wonderful communicator and cheerleaders and coordinator, making the experience during SIP very fun and positive.
PHS and SPCA are an exceptional organization dedicated to the highest standard of compassionate and collaborative care for pets and people who need their help. As a disaster relief volunteer I have helped PHS in stressful situations and seen them provide the best possible care for animals and treat pets and their families with respect and kindness. They work tirelessly to provide shelter and safety, essential and reliable support, and important information to animals and animal owners who need help.
The most professional and caring staff ever. I feel so grateful for all of them and for what they do to help us take care of our beloved family members.
As a senior during Covid 19, I need to take extra precautions. Luckily I heard about the special program available through the Peninsula Humane Society and Pick of the Litter Thrift Shop. Brian Probst and his crew are dedicated employees doing a great service for those who are having a difficult time taking care of the pets during SIP. Having this assistance really takes a big burden off my shoulder. I really want to thank Brian and his staff for their generosity, You've made Bubba a real happy and playful dog.
Peninsula Humane Society is very dear to my heart. I have adopted many dogs throughout the years from them and wouldn't go anywhere else. If there is a problem after adoption, they are there to help you 100% with medical, behavior issues and the like. I believe in all that Peninsula Humane Society stands for that I became part of the Forever Friends Legacy Society.
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is a wonderful organization that engages the community while saving thousands of lives each year. Growing up in the Bay Area, I was fortunate to attend their animal camp as a youth. There, I not only learned about animal care, but I also came to understand how much the staff and volunteers truly value and respect all life, from spider to human. Over twenty years later, I continue to see the PHS increase their efforts every year, always striving to be better and do more.

I can't say enough good things about the Peninsula Humane Society. For almost two decades, I have interacted with them as both an adopter and volunteer, and even as an animal camp participant when I was young. They have grown into a model shelter that not only saves every life possible, but empowers our community to take part in the ongoing mission to end animal suffering and abuse. They never turn away an animal, regardless of how sick or difficult to deal with they may be. The PHS goes beyond its scope of duty and reaches out to other shelters in their times of need. Not long ago, they took in many animals displaced by hurricane Irma, and this week (10/14/17) they are making efforts to help those affected by the fires ravaging California. Best of all, they only continue to expand their efforts, and are forerunners in the mission to increase and promote animal welfare.
Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) is proactive in planning for animal care during emergencies. There are many potential disasters that can affect pets including earthquakes, floods, and fires. PHS has pre-staged supply trailers throughout the County to be able to care for animals after a disaster. PHS also trains volunteers to staff field shelters. Before the disaster, PHS educates community members on how they can include their pets in their family preparedness planning. I enjoy volunteering with an organization that values being prepared.
I have been an active volunteer with PHS for many years and promote all they do all the time. A few weeks ago I had them come to my Company Adopt a Pet Month event so we could raise money for the shelter as well as donations for Pick of the Liter which is the second hand store. The shelter is immaculate, the animals are very well cared for and the volunteer program is fantastic. I work at all the events and used to work in the Spay & Neuter Clinic. I will hopefully be able to get them to come back to our event next year! They are a top rate shelter and I am proud to be a part of it. Debbie

I have been volunteering at PHS since 2006 and find it to be a very rewarding thing to do. I used to work in Spay & Neuter and enjoyed it very much. I now volunteer at as many events as I possibly can hoping it will make a difference for our wonderful animals. All of the staff and other volunteers are great and make it a pleasure to be in such a wonderful place.
I also promote The Pick of the Liter where all the proceeds go towards the animals. I have been donating to them for many years and will continue to do so. John always has a smile on his face when you see him at The Pick and is very welcoming. If you have many items to donate they will coordinate a time to pick them up at your house.
We have a wonderful Fashion Show which is getting better and better each year that we put it on, a huge success and so much fun for the volunteers, models & patrons. We raise a lot of money for the Hope Fund.
A wonderful facility, caring staff and loving animals looking for their forever home. PHS is a great place and I would highly recommend anyone looking to adopt to check it out. I give them a "10+". Debbie
I have been volunteering for 10 years at PHS. During that time I have hand fed baby birds and squirrels, walked dogs, helped with special events and been a Greeter welcoming guests to our beautiful Lantos Center for Compassion. I have seen first hand the care and kindness with which staff and volunteers attend to all of our frightened and lost animals. Each animal is an individual who is treated lovingly and respectfully. It’s a privilege to be a small part of this organization. This is Pippa, my adopted Poochon. She’s a wonderful family dog.
I started volunteering 3 years ago at Peninsula Humane Society and deeply appreciate the opportunity to grow in my dog handling skills and help PHS make a difference alongside the competent and dedicated staff.
The benefits of social bonding with dogs and cats is a positive influence on human health, especially for vulnerable populations, such as kids, the elderly and inmates. PHS contributes the welfare of society, not just the non-human animals in our care.
I would like to see more creative programs, such as more descriptive narratives of pets that are ready for adoption, organized days/weekends out with volunteers for dogs and more frequent play group interaction among the dogs, as I have seen done at other shelters, but I recognize that these initiatives add operational complexity and that resources are limited.
This is my second year volunteering for PHS SPCA. Volunteering here has become a large part of my life, and I never seize to be impressed by how well things are organized for us. There are hundreds of volunteers, and we work together pretty much seamlessly, every day, all year long! This requires great coordination, very clear guidelines, rules, and practices.
I also really appreciate how the shelter is going the extra mile to always keep our experience positive, when in fact we're dealing with something very sad: homeless/neglected/injured animals. Simply put, I am grateful for the opportunity to do my part and not be heartbroken all the time. Great staff, great facilities, I feel very lucky to be here.
I foster cats and kittens for PHS and I have been impressed by the care and attention that the animals get. When I have an issue or problem with a kitten or I need supplies, the foster team, as well as the front desk team, are top notch and take care of what I and the cats need.
I've been volunteering at PHS for more than 10 years. I'd recommend this volunteer opportunity to anyone interested in working with animals.
We adopted our cat from the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA and the people we dealt with could not have been nicer or more professional when it came to asking us questions about our experience, our home environment, and what we were looking for in a pet. The experience was so positive that I became a PHS/SPCA volunteer because I wanted to give back to the organization that had given us so much.
I've been a volunteer there for over 10 years now, and it's one of the best things I've ever done at one of the best places I've ever served. I've volunteered all over the Bay Area in a variety of organizations (AIDS groups, local food banks, libraries, other animal rescue organizations) and I have so say that PHS is the best run, most welcoming, most appreciative organization I've ever known. I've made so many great friends, met so many amazing staff members, dealt with the public, worked with the critters, and have generally found my home away from home.
Everyone at PHS puts the animals first. They really care about the physical and emotional well being of every animal that comes through the door. It's not just about getting animals adopted, it's finding the right home for the right animal with the right family or individual. And that makes all the difference.
The shelter itself is beautiful. Big, clean, welcoming, and full of happy animals that get a lot of love until they find a home.
Bottom line: great people at a fabulous organization. Thanks, PHS, for taking care of our kitty until we found her. And for welcoming me and making me feel like part of the family.
I have been a volunteer for 23 years, watching PHS improve and grow as the years go by. As challenging as staffing is in the Bay Area, PHS works very hard to hire and retain excellent and motivated employees who go to great lengths to help the animals and the adopters. This is a very difficult job, dealing with a variety of stressful medical, social, and behavioral (both animals and humans !) problems. The staff is invariably professional and competent in complex and uncertain situations. The animals get excellent care with complete daily cleanings and observations. The veterinary care is meticulous and caring, for hundreds of animals, some in very dire conditions. I wouldn't have stayed for 23 years if I didn't think the organization was worth it!
I donate to Peninsula Humane Society because they provides the best care and services for the animals in San Mateo County. Please remember to give generously to support our local animal shelter.
I adopted my cat from PHS & SPCA and have worked in the past as a volunteer. The staff and team of volunteers are very committed to serving the animals and the public. The animals are well cared for until they are adopted, the volunteers are well trained and they also have classes and training for the public as well as outreach programs. We're lucky to have a dedicated organization like this in the bay area.
I am a volunteer foster parent for kittens from the Peninsula Humane Society in Burlingame; nearly sixty kittens have spent time with me and my family over the past 10 years. I choose to work with Peninsula Humane because the staff is exceptionally talented, dedicated and compassionate. The kittens that I foster have excellent health care while they are with me and I know they will have the best chance of finding permanent homes at the beautiful Lantos center. I know that the hours I volunteer give the staff extra time to help many other animals in need.
Around 1986 or 1987 there was an oil spill in the Bay, and there were many ducks and birds covered with oil and near death. PHS brought them to the shelter and put a call out for temporary volunteers to help the existing volunteers and staff to help clean them. I was flying as a flight attendant and had a lot of time between flights. I thought I would help them for a few weeks. After the crisis softened, I decided to stay full-time as a volunteer because of my love of animals, but also because of the caring and compassionate staff and volunteers I met while there. I am still there more than 30 years later and still loving the organization and people. I also learned from that time so long ago about how well Dawn soap works for cleaning oil and grease.
I have been volunteering for PHS-SPCA for 7 years in different departments and the dedication, compassion, and knowledge of the staff and volunteers goes beyond the call of duty.
I volunteer here in the "Furchandise" store. I work retail so the profits can go back into the shelter and it gives me a unique opportunity to see how PHS serves the community. From a woman coming in looking for a harness that will reduce pulling and leaving with that and an appointment to work with her dog and a trainer to seeing a little girl and her mother pick toys for a kitten they're adopting because the girl made straight A's that semester, I get to see the people and animals that are helped by PHS's approach to serving the animals in San Mateo County.
This is an animal shelter located in San Mateo county whose mission it is to find kind and loving homes for all of its animals. This is a publicly funded non-profit organization that takes-in lost and unwanted animals and prepares them for adoption by deserving families. I am pleased to say that I am a volunteer at this shelter as well as a regular donor. Since I have begun volunteering there, I have been privileged to work with the caring and compassionate staff members, and have spent time with many really wonderful animals in need of a home. I feel that this shelter deserves the consideration of animal lovers everywhere.
I have been a volunteer at Pick of the Litter Thrift store (which is affiliated with PHS) for several years. Having a Yorkie 'fur-child' was a catalyst in becoming a volunteer at the thrift store, knowing all proceeds go to help the animals. Presently, I decorate the thrift display windows. Many of the items displayed are from donations. I enjoy working with other volunteers, as well as assisting our patrons. I invite you to visit Pick of the Litter Thrift store - i'm sure you will find a little treasure for yourself, and perhaps one for your pet.
I have been donating to the Peninsula Humane Society for the past 1O years. It all began when we adopted our beloved Lucy from PHS. I was so impressed with the organization and the support we received.
PHS provides an invaluable service to the community. They do so with love and compassion.
I have been a volunteer at PHS for a few years now and I love their dedicated work to help animals . The behavior staff is amazing and always there if you need help or advice . Everyone is working hard trying to do their best helping animals
I have been a donor, a member of the Board for a few years and a volunteer for more than thirty years and have seen many changes -- all for the good -- during those years. It truly is an "open-door shelter", open to all, no matter the age or health condition. Others that call themselves "no-kill" shelters are actually "closed-door" shelters because they only accept the very adoptable pets and have a waiting list for those who wish to surrender their pet.
My husband and I have been supporters of PHS for 25 years. We continue to be amazed by how dedicated the staff and volunteers are to the animals. Despite the large number of animals brought to the shelter each one is treated individually and is given the best opportunity for a happy outcome.
We’ve been long time donors to this organization. My wife and I are both life long animal lovers, and PHS-SPCA has shown that they are of a similar mindset. Which is not something we take lightly. We thank them all often and have adopted there many times as well. We love PHS!

PHS-SPCA is so much more than just a shelter for lost dogs and cats. The passion and drive that is shown by everyone that works there, from the head of the organization right down to the ones that clean the kennels and cages, is so inspirational and honest, and obviously it's all a labor of love. This, in turn, ripples down to the fact that there are more than 1,400 volunteers that only want to help make the lives of every animal in PHS' care, better. Not a simple task. Many of the animals here are traumatized and depressed. We all are there to help try and make their stay a positive and rewarding experience--and adoptable. Plus, PHS is also a wildlife rescue and rehab facility too. This, in short, is an amazing place that also makes for a rewarding experience for everyone involved.
My wife and I became donors over 20 years ago when we adopted our first of four dogs. We became donors when we realized the great work that PHS delivers on a consistent basis to the animals they rescue and that are in their care. We continue our support of PHS as both legacy and campaign donors due to their sustained and substantially positive impact on our community.
I’ve been volunteering at PHS/SPCA for 23 years. I’ve seen the organization grow into something about which they should be incredibly proud. They do amazing work and are a true asset for the community.

PHS/SPCA is a great organization. They have wonderful leadership, and have built an unrivaled volunteer program. While they are not what some consider a "No Kill" animal shelter, they only euthanize animals when it's in the best interest of the animal (i.e., when an animal is suffering, and cannot recover or when an animal's behavior is dangerous, and the behavior cannot be corrected). Since they are connected to the county as the animal control agency, they have to accept every animal that comes through its doors.
I have been a volunteer for Peninsula Humane for almost 9 years. No job, paid or volunteer has left me with the feeling of true accomplishment that PHS does. I do the dog dishes, laundry and sometime clean the kennels. While this job is not glamorous it is fulfilling in every way. And because this nonprofit is near and dear to my heart, I have recently signed on to be a member of their Auxiliary with helping to raise funds for their ongoing animal cost of care.

I started my volunteer adventure over two years ago. More important then any job I have ever done and been paid for or otherwise, this tops the list of ALL TIME BEST. I start and end my day with a smile. I have made many new friends and aquaintences there. The animals rely on my services and I rely on the fantastic feeling that they give me. I have in additon to working for and with the animals, been able to help in the administrative area and the facilities. This is a truly a destination that plants a power of goodwill and happiness and it can do that for all.
Review from CharityNavigator
Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA does their very best to offer a safe and loving environment for the animals they care for. The staff is knowledgeable, and it's apparent that the animals' needs and best interest are a priority. Their volunteer training is thorough enough so when it's your first day on the job you feel confident stepping right in.
I initially volunteered at Peninsula Humane Society, several years ago. I was so impressed
with what I saw, that my husband and I decided to add them to our small list of organizations
we donate to annually. I continue to be amazed at the employees and volunteers' level of
commitment to help animals in need. PHS is also, incredibly well managed. I look
forward to continuing to work with them, in the future.
Sincerely,
Kathie Heidenreich
It's been a pleasure volunteering for the Peninsual Humane Society. From the various high quality services to the incredible employees and volunteers, I feel proud to be part of the team.
I have been a volunteer at PHS for about 7 years. I work mostly in the Behavior Department, run by Maria Eguren. In recent years, I have worked with Maria to evaluate how adoptable dogs do with children of various ages -- so that adoptions are a good match. Maria is so knowledgeable about dogs, and great to work with. All in all, I love volunteering at PHS and very much appreciate the great work the shelter does.
I adopted my dog from PHS and was so thrilled with the way the animals were treated there that me and my kids started volunteering! I’ve worked with animals my entire life and have never seen such a compassionate group of folks that dedicated their lives to their well being.
I love the PHS. I have been volunteering here for years, and I hope I can continue to spend my time helping the people and animal here.
Everyone is amazing in how they care about animals, and work hard to care for those animals. Whether it's pets that need a new home, or wildlife that needs some attention before it can be went back to the wild.
I am an 8 year voluneer with the Penninsula Humane Society. Not enough could ever be said about this haven of love and respect for animals who have no place to go wandering the streets, were brought in abused, or turned over because the owner could no longer keep them. The level of care and nurturing is excellent and the staff and volunteers love their jobs and the kind people they see there daily. If they didn't they would not be there as the work is tough. Keeping the animals and thier surroundings clean and fed is long hard work. The work we all do at Peninsula Humane is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever done. Even though this is not a paid job for me, it is just as rewarding.
All the employees and volunteers have such a great passion for the welfare of animals.
As a volunteer in the kitten nursery for the last five years, I have seen 230 plus kittens adopted each year that would not have survived without the program. Some very small kittens are syringe fed by volunteers. Some of the kittens are only 2 weeks old. Three shifts a day tend to the needs of vulnerable kittens. Volunteers also foster at home which is coordinated by the program. Last year, 240 kittens found a home, were saved from being feral and were spayed.
There are also departments for wildlife which include exotic animals such as owls, hummingbirds and more.
The new building was designed for each department and makes a very pleasent place to visit and work.
The dog behavior area which has many dog adoption rooms with large glass windows and holds obedience classes is amazing. We are truly blessed that this building was funded and built.
Recently, 60 homeless animals were airlifted from Florida to San Mateo, CA to be cared for in the shelter. These animals would have been put down in Florida to make room for displaced animals with possible owners/families.The kitten nursery takes in kittens from other bay area shelters which do not have the ability to care for them.
The shelter takes care of many animals that have to be quarantined including the Florida animals which carry diseases not found in California. Once passing quarantine these animals will find homes.
The philosophy is that every healthy animal will be cared for throughout its life. Some cats have been here for 10 plus years.
If you are in the area, come by and see the dedicated staff and volunteers with these well cared for animals year round. The kitten nursery is on the second floor May-September/October.
I have adopted 3 cats here. Two, Pepper and Ginger, lived to be 19 years old, and Mew inspired me to volunteer at the shelter, so I am a client and volunteer.
I have fostered a total of 22 dogs over the past one and a half years. EVERYONE I have interacted with from vets to coordinators to adoption staff is so devoted. Whether we have newborns with a mama or two frightened 6 month old chihuahuas, the love, compassion and dedication to these animals is amazing. They are also responsive and easy to work with which makes volunteering for them addictive...ask my husband!
My husband and I cannot say enough good things about the Peninsula Humane Society (PHS) & SPCA from its caring and friendly staff and open-shelter policy to its commitment to re-homing dogs and cats and its wide array of programs and services offered to the community. We adopted our first dog Scooby, a German Shepherd-Pit Bull Terrier mix, from the PHS & SPCA when he was 9 years old, and was blessed to call him a member of our family for seven more wonderful and fulfilling years! We are so impressed with the selflessness of the PHS & SPCA that we are now proud to call ourselves volunteers, having the pleasure to help at the non-profit's fundraisers, including Secondhand Chic and A Home for the Holidays events. PHS & SPCA is truly an integral part of our community! BRAVO! BRAVO!
I have been a volunteer for over 16 years in veterinary services and overall I think PHS & SPCA does wonderful work for homeless animals. The PHS & SPCA animal shelter is one of the few animal shelters that takes in ALL animals, not just adoptable animals and that is a very important role this organization fills. If an animal is not adoptable, at least it will be cared for by the staff at PHS & SPCA. The Foster Care Program is one example of how PHS & SPCA cares for the animals that are not immediately adoptable. See the photo of the kitty family for which PHS & SPCA provided foster care until momma cat and her seven kittens were healthy enough to be adopted .
I have been a PHS volunteer for over five years now and it is one of the best decisions I've ever made. PHS is an amazing organization that I am wholeheartedly proud to be a part of. As a volunteer, I've found the staff at PHS to be extremely dedicated to their work, passionate about helping animals (and people!) and also very talented. From the behavior department (my main department) to customer service to animal care and control, the staff at PHS are the very best. Also, the other volunteers who I have met at PHS are some of the most compassionate and inspiring people I've met. Our community is very lucky to have PHS looking out for our pets!
My dog, Cody, and I have been volunteers with PHS for 3 years as part of the Paws and Tales program. We work at libraries, medical clinics, schools, colleges and county health clinics.
Every time I see children reading their hearts out to the dog teams, people waiting for medical procedures being comforted by the dogs, children previously afraid of dogs sitting close and loving them and children in therapy holding "their dog" as they work I am awed by the gift these animals provide people by their love, friendship and acceptance.
PHS enables this all to happen not only by caring for all the animals coming to them but also making the connections between these incredible animals and the community.
The world needs more of these interactions!
We all want to make a difference in this world. PHS shows by action what many of us believe in our hearts. Every little thing we do , can make a positive difference. Every single day , staff and volunteers work together to help all kinds of animals and people in our community .
I have had the privilege of volunteering at PHS for 20 years now Hmm, for those of you wondering, !" Whoa, just how old is she anyway? " The answer is , I am still in double digits. The saying, " time flies when you are having fun" truly applies when helping at Peninsula Humane Society! Thank you, Lisa O'Brien
Adopting our dog from the Peninsula Humane Society five years ago was one of the best things my family has ever done, and we wanted to give back. At the time my daughter was 13 so we signed on as a mother-daughter team. And yet again - this was one of the best things we have done as a family. We began with dog TLC, then we added cat TLC to our training, and now we also work with outreach and events. We couldn't be happier. When PHS says they build healthy relationships between people and animals, they speak the truth. It has been three years that we have been volunteering and we see no end in sight.
I've been volunteering with the Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA since 2013. My daughter and I started with Cat TLC and have worked in the Kitten Nursery the last 2 kitten seasons. We also help with the videos on adoptable cats. The staff is great and what the organization does is amazing -- we couldn't be happier to have such a wonderful organization that helps so many animals so close to our home.
I have been volunteering at Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA for over 5 years now, mainly working on the Dog TLC program within the Behavior department, although I do help out with special events, such as the Charity Gala Ball and Burlingame Pet Parade. PHS & SPCA provide a variety of services ranging from, the expected, Adoptions, Obedience classes and Education programs to, the less obvious, Birthday parties for 6-12 year-olds. The dedicated staff and passionate volunteers, working rain or shine with constant smiles on their faces because they love what they do, are friendly, approachable and very knowledgeable. They are all great assets to the organization. PHS is a wonderful place for pets, wildlife, and the people who care for them, and I am proud to be part of it. I adopted my own dog from PHS two and a half years ago, and still count my blessing each and every day; she is an absolute treasure.
I've been volunteering with the Peninsula Humane Society since 2014. I participate in the Dog TLC program, along with Paws for Tales facilitated by the Pet Assisted Therapy group, and assist with Special Events. Between the knowledgeable staff, dedicated volunteers, and the myriad of programs to better the lives of all animals and the community, I'm proud to be part of this organization.
I owe a special thank you to the behavior group and Dog TLC volunteers for taking care of the dogs that have permanently become part of my family. I am so grateful for the care and love each of you provided to my boys during their time with the PHS.
The very first time I volunteered for the Peninsula Humane Society was back when I was in college quite a few years ago. After college I was establishing my career and could no longer volunteer. However once my career path stabilized I jumped back in to volunteer again and I've been there ever since. I love this organization. They show their love for animals every day with their amazing volunteers and staff. They also continue to grow and improve and are constantly working to make things better for the animals in their care. Over the years I have also had the opportunity to adopt some wonderful furbabies from them (including my latest 2 girls in the photo). I can't say enough good things about the Peninsula Humane Society. I'm so glad to have a great organization like this close by so I can stay involved.
I started as a volunteer at PHS & SPCA over five years ago with my 13 year old daughter providing TLC to dogs in their dorms. When she moved on to kittens and wildlife I stayed with the dogs and have been helping with classes, dog walking, photography for the website and special event coverage. I feel like the staff and other volunteers have become family and I really look forward to my shifts at the shelter. The adoption staff and behaviorists are dedicated and compassionate and I feel that they appreciate the work that I do to help get the dogs ready for adoption.
We have adopted several wonderful pets from the Peninsula Humane Society over the years. Two cats and a Dog in total. The staff there is very helpful and cares very much about matching you up with the right animal. it is obvious that they are "animal people" and understand that choosing a pet is a long term commitment and they give you the time to make the right choice. I recommend the PHS for anyone looking to add a pet to their home.
I have been a volunteer with the Peninsula Humane Society for 6 years. Ever since I started, I've worked with the cats - I love it! I am also involved in training new volunteers before they actively start volunteering in the Cat TLC program.
The facility is lovely, the staff is kind, conscientious and caring. I got my two kitties from their in 2007 and can't imagine what would have happened to these two fun, furry girls if it had not been for the PHS.
I have been a volunteer for PHS for over seven years, mostly in the Pet Assisted Therapy program, but I have also helped out in the Cat TLC program. My wife and daughters have as well. Their services are wide-ranging and there are a numerous opportunities for the public to get involved, even for young adults. They have a very dedicated staff (both the paid staff and volunteers) who all seem to enjoy and believe in what they do. For those of us who participate in programs out in the community, it is important that we have support (event coordination, materials, etc.) and the PHS staff is very attentive to our needs. PHS is a great organization for pets, wildlife, and the people who care for them.
I have been volunteering for the Peninsula Humane Society for four plus years and I can't say enough great things about the services they provide. Both of my cats came from PHS and they are wonderful companions.
The staff is caring and dedicated, especially the adoption and the behavior staff and it's a pleasure to be associated with them.
A great organization with great people.
I’ve volunteered in the PHS/SPCA Wildlife Care Center since 2012. Everyone has stories about their encounters with urban wildlife, like what to do with a baby squirrel that’s fallen out of a tree. Most people aren’t aware that there’s an excellent resource that can come to the rescue. Serving the San Francisco Peninsula area, the PHS/SPCA is one of the few humane societies in the country that care for injured and orphaned wildlife. We also provide a phone-in help line for people having problems with or questions about urban wildlife. You can get advice regarding animals that have decided to share your home and settled in a little too close for comfort. Skunks under your deck? Ducks in your pool? Raccoons coming through your pet door and ransacking your Kitchen? We’ve got answers!
I am in awe of the dedicated staff and army of volunteers that show up every spring to care for and rehabilitate young or injured wildlife. Special techniques are used to make sure animals don’t become too comfortable with or imprinted on humans, critical if they are to remain viable for re-release in the wild. Each season well over a thousand animals are treated and released back to their natural habitat. I love volunteering for an organization where caring for wildlife is seen as a logical extension of the compassion and humane treatment of the domestic animals we share our lives with.
My dog and I have been volunteering as Pet Assisted Therapy Partners for the past six years with Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA. They are a wonderful to their volunteers. Their Therapy program is top notch, and is the only Therapy Group I recommend in my area. All areas of their volunteer program and well run and directed, I am proud and honored to represent this fine non-profit. Vonunteers are reminded that their role is a vital part of making all their programs work. We are recognized several time during the year by PHS/SPCA as a whole. Communication is wonderful. I would rate it 10 stars if more that five were available!
I have been a volunteer with PHS/SPCA for 14 years, in various roles, and have always felt extremely appreciated. I can say without a doubt that I'm very proud to be affiliated with the organization, and it's been an incredibly rewarding way to spend my free time. Their new Center for Compassion in Burlingame is a state of the art facility for all animals available for adoption. I have always found their staff members to be dedicated, hard working, and compassionate.
Over the years, I have seen more than a few adoptable animals waiting for the right home for over a year (or two!). The staff and volunteers work tirelessly to make sure these animals are as happy and stimulated as possible, while living at the shelter. You won't find many open door shelters who will care for adoptable animals that long, which makes PHS/SPCA stand out.
I have also adopted two cats from them - their adoption process is thorough and smooth.
I cannot say enough good things about Peninsula Humane Society. I have been a volunteer for the past ten years working with the behavior department. All the employees I work with each week are always working to provide the best possible situation for every animal they are responsible for. For the most part I am working with people much younger than myself, and I am always impressed with their knowledge and dedication for every aspect of their job. This can be a very challenging place to work, but I have always seen the best decisions being made for the welfare of the animal. I do not know how this organization could be any better!
I have been a volunteer at PHS-SPCA since 2009. I have volunteered in numerous areas including kitten nursery, wildlife and at the PHS-SPCA Thrift store, Pick of the Liter. The employees and volunteers all genuinely care for animals and go above and beyond the call of duty to help a sick, injured or lonely animal. They are friendly and dedicated. Volunteering for SPA-SPCA has been a very rewarding experience.
Spring through fall, I foster kittens....as a foster there's never a better day than when one of your fosters gets adopted. The kittens up for adoption have been given hours of love prior to you adopting them.
We have also been on the other side, as a client.... We have adopted 4 animals from PHS-SPCA ...3 cats and one dog. They are friendly, healthy and happy and bring joy to us every day. The adoption process was thorough but the forms are pretty quick to fill out. We were able to spend a lot of time interacting with our cats and dogs prior to adopting them. Everyone was friendly and helpful. Our dog loves coming back to say hi:)
Peninsula Humane Society, Burlingame, CA offers a lot with passion and commitment. I have been volunteering there for now more than 4 years. I am a behind the scene volunteer, working in their donation center which is utilized to raise funds for the animals. I feel proud that whatever we are able to raise goes directly towards the welfare of the animals. I have a full time job, and I have been able to maintain my volunteer hours with them only due to their flexibility, and open hearts. Each of us has some skill, time, love, to give and I feel that PHS exhibits in a perfect form how to utilize what each one of us has to offer. PHS has also provided me a window to the selfless people who work there, on a daily basis, and has been a lesson in how to create a successful community. I look forward to going there and feel that it is one of the best nonprofits I have come across.
After losing my PHS /SPCA rescue dog Teneka, a certified canine companion my search at the PHS begins again in 2009. My rescue adoption of Teneka was 5 star from the moment I walked in the door. From greeter, staff workers, dog handlers to completion of adoption paperwork. ( same applies to below adoption)
My 2009 interaction with PHS/SPCA started with 3 year old rescue dog, Pearle. (Aka Madonna-A462826). Madonna she was not! A dog so cute that was able to make other dog owners run when they saw Pearle coming. Returning Pearle was not an option I accepted. Biting is a no-no in the readopting world.
Group training was not an option. With PHS guidance, support and tools assisting me ( an experienced dog & cat owner.) dealing with a severely abused & neglected dog. Pearle, now 9 yr old senior citizen with a happy tail wagging. PHS did a few one on one sessions with Pearle & I .
An animal lover and a believer in PHS/SPCA .... Six months ago I became a volunteer.
Peninsula Humane Society continues to provide outstanding service to help animals in Northern California. I have volunteered here for 8 years and adopted two rescue animals from them. Their adoption center is world class - for both adoptable animals and adopters. Their community programs, events, and outreach are top notch.
I have been volunteering at Peninsula Humane Society for 7 months now. It has been a great experience - everyone here is so friendly and helpful. I volunteer in the Development department and so I get to see behind the scenes of how the organization is run. PHS is much more efficient and productive than any other organization I have worked for or volunteer at.
Additionally, my family has adopted many animals from PHS over the years and each time the staff was very helpful and we have never had any problems. I have really enjoyed my experiences with PHS both as a volunteer and as an adopter.
We adopted our dog Sugar from PHS when she was just a puppy, over 9 years ago already! We were so thankful for the wonderful work they did before we took Sugar home that we have been regular donors ever since. I finally got the time to start volunteering in August, and I love being able to give my time and energy to helping this wonderful organization. I'm able to help so many more dogs this way, since adopting means we only help 1 or 2 dogs every 10 years or so! I work with dogs in the Second Chance class to help get dogs to adoptable status, and I have also fostered dogs, really getting to make an impact. I am also working with the Development/Fundraising department and love that I'm also giving back to the organization itself. I feel very appreciated, and it's my first "job" where I just want to hang out longer and find more to do! We will definitely be involved with PHS for many years to come.
I adopted my cat from PHS in 2006 (she's still with me and doing great), the adoption staff were helpful and very nice. Since then I've visited their new adoption center on Rollins Road, I didn't adopt but the facility is beautiful and my kids had a blast hanging out there. All the staff and volunteers I had contact with were nice and all seem to genuinely have the animals' best interest at heart. I'll definitely adopt from them again.
Review from Guidestar
I volunteered with PHS for ten years doing Lost and Found on Saturdays. I also went in, often, on days such as Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve, and other holidays so I could get animals home for the coming holiday. In ten years timne, I never missed coming in on July 5, the busiest day of the year. Because of the fireworks, there are many frightened animals. When I started, I noticed I found lots of dogs, but very few cats. I did research and found out that less than 2% of cats are found in shelters. That's because they are hiding. I developed a "talk" that I gave to cat owners and instructed them how they could find their own cats. Of course, I also told them always to check the shelter, but mostly they should be doing the searching themselves. It was a very, very good feeling when people reported they had found their cat. Suddenly, last August I was told my services would no longer be needed and all lost and found volunteers were being terminated and the vet techs were taking over.I asked for an explanation and was simply told the decision had been made. There was no thanks for my services for ten years. I knew my last day would be Sept 3. A few days before my last day, on a busy day, a man came over, handed me a piece of paper and said he liked all the information I was giving about cats. When I had time to look, it was a check for $1,000 to PHS.In ten years time, I never heard a staff person say any thing except come back in a few days.I feel very bad about all the lost cats.I did type up my "speech" and I hope they are using it.
I've been a volunteer at PHS since 2002, and have greatly enjoyed both directly & indirectly helping animals as a volunteer. I mostly work with dogs, but have been lucky enough to help-out with a little bit over everything over the years and have gotten both the macro as well as micro-view. As a volunteer, it is a wonderful experience to be able to step into a kennel & perhaps be the first person to really show compassion to that animal in who knows how long. Even better is to see that many other volunteers have spent time with that animal during the time it has been at PHS. Perhaps the very next day, you could be helping out at a PHS fund-raiser, and thus give a heartfelt, personal account of how that donor's money allows people like yourself the opportunity to then work with the animal and help shape it into a happy & well-behaved prospective pet. My volunteer work at PHS was directly responsible for me spending time locked-up in the county jail. As a volunteer trainer, I'd go to the jail facility once a week to teach inmates how go teach PHS dogs basic obedience & socialization as part of the Transitioning Animals Into Loving Situations (TAILS) program, so you never know where volunteering at PHS may take you, but there are lots of opportunities for YOU to directly & indirectly help the animals in need in San Mateo County.
PHS is a fabulous place to volunteer! I have been with them for six years doing a variety of tasks from working directly with the animals to fundraising to serving on various committees. The staff go out of their way to thank the volunteers and to make sure that we know that we are part of their team and they could not be the success that they are without us.
The staff treat the animals staying at the shelter with love and compassion. They care about making sure that the animals are well taken care of and that they find their forever home. The veterinary staff save lives and give the opportunity to go up for adoption, the behavior team prepares them for their new homes and the adoption staff ensures that they find the best possible home for the animal. When a long term animal (or even a very special short term visitor) finally goes home, the excitement that everyone (staff and volunteer alike) feels is contagious.
There is no place I'd rather donate my time and when the time comes, no other place that I will be adopting from.
I've been volunteering at PHS for almost 2 1/2 years now and have to say that it's the best decision I made. The staff is always willing to help volunteers out when needed whether it's answering endless questions or getting dogs out. I have seen the Customer Service staff doing their best to accomodate and answer questions for potential adopters, the Vet staff helping folks get through having to put their beloved pet down and I don't want to leave out the Animal Care Techs who when we were still at the old facility were always there to help volunteers out getting dogs in and out of kennels. I'm thankful for the opportunity to volunteer in a place where there is so much heart and compassion. PHS you rock and thanks for our 2 wonderful doggies!
I've supported this fine organization for many years now. PHS/SPCA is essential to the care of the animals in San Mateo County. They have just now opened a beautiful new home for the animals to reside in Burlingame. Our community should be proud of the good work the shelter does for all animals. I urge you to support them as I do.
I have adopted from PHS in the past and been a past supporter but am very disappointed in the way they have "handled" a situation with a friend of mine who has been a volunteer there for 10 years. She was recently told by the PHS Volunteer Coordinator, the volunteers in "lost in found" will no longer be needed and "vet techs" who are already overwhelmed will be taking over. My friend has dedicated her Saturdays and other days (when they needed her) for 10 years to reunite lost animals and they abruptly have told her (and the other volunteers in that dept) they are not needed, not very "humane" to me. When asked for further info, none was given but "the decision has been made." Is this the way to run an organization? My friend is devasted for all the animals she fears will not be reunited. Over the years, she has developed many techniques for people to use to search for animals (who are not in the shelter). She is not one of those people who simply looks at a list and tells people their animal is not there. She has gone over and above what a volunteer is expected to do and this is the way she gets treated. I am so disapointed not only for her but for all the animals as well.
