Mission: For decades, transportation agencies designed roads to maximize the speed, safety and convenience of motorists, often to the detriment of pedestrian safety and access. PEDS seeks to replace outdated transportation policies, design standards, and funding priorities with ones that make public places, local stores, and transit accessible by foot.
Programs: PEDS' advocacy work promotes the design of pedestrian-oriented streets and communities, the equitable use of transportation funds, and the enforcement of laws protecting pedestrians. Our educational programs increase awareness of crosswalk laws, risks associated with speeding, safe walking skills, and encourage communities to take back the streets for walking. We provide training workshops for transportation professionals on designing streets for pedestrians. We also provide a voice for pedestrians on tasks forces and stakeholders groups. We also work with local agencies to increase awareness of the needs of pedestrians with disabilities.
