Nonprofit Overview

Mission: The nature of warfare has changed. It is no longer soldiers who bear the brunt of war. Studies reveal ninety percent of all casualties in modern conflicts are civilians, the majority of them women and children. It is also recognized that a balance of women's and men's voices are requisite for successful peace negotiation and implementation. Yet, female perspectives continue to be disempowered. Where are their voices at the peace table? Where is the support for women's work on every level? And how can women empower themselves in building peace? PEACE X PEACE is a nonprofit organization casting light on the work women are doing for peace on all levels, from the most grassroots efforts to the highest levels of government. PEACE X PEACE supports, educates and connects women locally and globally, empowering them to build the conditions necessary for sustainable peace.

Peace X Peace is an organisation that continually raises women's voices and works for peace. It is a well know fact that women are the peacemakers of the world and Peace X Peace gives women from all over the world the chance to voice their opinions, their ideas and their skills. Women from all over the world, from all cultures, from all religions, from all beliefs can communicate with one another and help break down barriers that exist within all of these groups. 'If civilisation is to advance at all in the future, it must be through the help of women, women freed of their political shackles, women with full power to work their will in society' (Emmeline Pankhurst 1857-1928). These words are still so relevant in the world today and Peace X Peace is working towards bringing these words to life!

Peace X Peace publishes Voices from the Frontlines, which I find to be incredibly inspiring and unique. When I am struggling with my own purpose and direction, I find Voices from the Frontlines to be a comforting reminder of the many people working to make the world a better and more peaceful place.

I receive regular emails from Peace X Peace describing the work of many people working for peace. Each issue focuses on a theme. I am impressed with the information they offer. I am learning about people like John Hunter, creator of the World Peace Game. Today, I read about a woman in Washington, DC, who spends time with children from a poor area, giving them the opportunity to learn about love and respect. Peace X Peace is about walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Everyone they highlight is actively participating in creating a just and peaceful society.

My experience with Peace X Peace has been as a colleague in other organisations working for global peace and unity. I find their work professional, inspiring and engaging, and I am impressed with their ability to engage a broad range of people and tell stories that bring good attention to the cause.

PeacexPeace keeps me informed on important global issues. Knowing women active in the organization and hearing their stories has made me more aware of issues around the world. I have joined several initiatives and contributed to several causes based on what I have learned from Peacexpeace.

I find this hyper space/community because you hear more voices, voices that otherwise would go unnoticed. I am a baby member of the community, but so far I am blown away by the information and the possibilities and doors it opens.

PeaceXPeace offers a special online gathering place for women to share their stories of peacemaking and their concerns about issues of the day in a moderated forum. The posted articles, blog and Peace Times provide fascinating opinion and insight from women around the world. Their new initiative Connection Point focuses on conversations between women in the Islamic world and women in the West, often with poignant and dramatic narratives. Now, more than ever, PeaceXPeace is relevant.

PeacexPeace is one of the best networking areas to engender cross cultural communication and understanding. The more we talk and listen to each other, the better we will understand each other, worldwide. PeacexPeace does this. It is an exceptional place of enlightenment and forward thinking.

Peace X Peace began in 2002, when Patricia Smith Melton gathered six experts in peace and women's rights from around the world to discuss how they might maintain peace and improve women’s rights globally. Peace X Peace has been the first women’s global effective social movement network for cross-cultural dialogue. This organization listens to women’s needs, tries to solve their difficulties and motivates them to explore in order to achieve their highest goals inside and outside of the U.S. Peace X Peace has and had many well known publications such as, “Week X Week”, “be the Change: Person X Person”, “Peace Times” and “Voices from the frontlines.” Voices of women have always been valued and honored through this online global network. Peace X Peace provides opportunities to its members by giving women voices and also encouraging them to speak up. Peace X Peace conveys the message to all women over the world that peace is gained by working together. It begins with an individual and it continues with groups, parties, and nations. This feminist organization collaborates, rather than competes, with organizations that have congruent goals. Peace X Peace honored the voices of two distinguished Afghan women and awarded them “Power and Peace Awards”. Peace X Peace educates and encourages younger women to become the future leaders of their country. It is a women-led social movement and Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that multiplies the power of women globally through the usage of internet and other forms of technology. Peace X Peace helps to build sustainable peace and a civil society. Thanks to this wonderful organization and its wonderful life long members who worked and have been working hard to promote peace and unity globally. Many thanks to the founder of such an amazing organization Mrs. Patricia Smith Melton, who is still supporting and encouraging peace worldwide. Thanks to Mrs. Patricia (Pat) Morris, who worked really hard to make this organization very diverse and peaceful. Moreover, many sincere thanks to Mrs. Furthermore, thanks to Mary Liepold, who worked extremely very hard to convey the voices of women to everyone all over the world. She has worked hard to find and communicate with women all over the world directly by the telephone and also via email. I cannot forget when I was back home in Afghanistan, for the first time we talked over a online telephone conversation.
Every individual member of Peace x Peace is extraordinary wonderful and open-minded such as Molly Mayfield Barbee, Lynn McClintock, Linda Higdon, Alicia Simoni Liora Herman, KimWeichel, and many other distinguished staff that for just right now I cannot recall their beautiful names, each one of these wonderful people worked for this organization at some point in the past and some are still there. And now some new staff are joining to promote peace globally such as Caroline Anderson.

PeacexPeace came to my alma mater, Marygrove College, a few years ago where I was introduced to this dynamic organization. I live in a small community about an hour from Detroit so being able to connect on-line to women around the world who are interested in peace and justice and helping others was directly beneficial. PeacexPeace is open 24/7, no time spent commuting, no money on gasoline! In Feb 2009, I was able to visit the offices of PxP in Wash DC and introduced the Director of The Rebuilding Alliance, Donna Baranski-Walker to the staff.
I support TRA with their campaign: "I Care About Peace, I Care About Al Aqaba," and PeacexPeace supports me and others like me who have their own peace projects. We support one another.

With our US Gov't having 900 military bases around the world, it's wonderful having PeacexPeace at my fingertips with access to thousands of women around the world waging peace. Thank you, Patricia Smith Melton and Mary Liepold and all the other wonderful staff who inspire and support the work of peace and justice.

With much gratitude,
Mares Hirchert

Women of the world are passionately concerned about peace in our world but often feel there is nothing we can do and nowhere we can go.
It was in this mood that I sought out an organisation that would fulfill my ideas of peace and a place for women to take part in peacemaking at a grassroots level that would have impact on our communities and world.
Having spent many years working from the belief that peace begins with each one of us, I was delighted to come across Peace x Peace. Even if you did not know the organisation - the way peace is achieved is such a feminine way of doing things. It begins with collaboration, communication and deep respect of each other. These qualities appeal to women (and enlightened men) who wish to make a difference and they appealed to me. There are many ways you can be involved in Peace x Peace and there is one for you.
When I was creating the SMILEY CARDS in 2010 - a smile for peace (more details here www.melodyrgreen.com) I immediately thought of Peace X Peace. This year I am running a SMILE FOR PEACE campaign with the SMILEY CARDS - all proceeds from sales of the SMILEY CARDS will go to Peace x Peace. This is my way of creating a difference and letting people know about Peace x Peace. For me Peace x Peace is about inspiration - it is about inspiring me to take action and make a difference any way I can - this is mine.

The creator of PeaceXPeace, the staff, the volunteers and the PXP members have such a very visible deep devotion to reaching out around the world -- far, wide and deep -- to promote the importance and effectiveness of women's voices in peacebuilding efforts, which is why I was honored to be asked to serve on the board. This is proven by seeing the cross-cut of countries, walks of life, religious beliefs, ages, and gender behind this movement. I began volunteering for PXP in the beginning, and have watched the many textures and testimonies emerge in support of peacebuilding and justice.

PeacexPeace has allowed me to learn about peace initiatives, to connect with like-minded colleagues and partners around the world, and to spread the word about the work that our organization does. I found out about PeaceXPeace when the community manager reached out and invited me to write an article for Voices From the Frontlines. This gave me the opportunity to bring our work to a wider audience. Subsequently began to regularly write blogs for the site and to connect with members, some of whom I've discussed forming collaborative partnerships with to strengthen our efforts towards peace. Finally, the site has been incredibly helpful in awareness-raising about peace initiatives worldwide. PeacexPeace gives a voice to all of the positive news about steps towards peace. It's an invaluable network!
