This is the number ONE tourist attraction in Punta Gorda!! It is a wildlife rehabilitation center, and admission is by donation only, located in Ponce de Leon park off Marion Avenue. PRWC accepts, rescues and rehabilitates injured animals and releases them, once cured, back into the wilderness across Charlotte Couuntry or neighboring counties as close as possible to the location where they were rescued. Those animals which can not be released because they could no longer survive in the wild are kept for life at PRWC in Ponce De Leon Park off Marion Avenue (2 miles past Fishermans Village). These are the adorable animals you will see. Either self guided tours or tourguides provide amazing insights to the mammals, reptiles and hundreds of birds living there. Everyone loves the open air pelican feeding at 2:30 every day! Hours are 11-4 daily, and anyone needing help with an injured wild animal can call for rescue help or bring the animal directly there all day long. In 2017, 2443 injured animals were treated there. There are some adorable ambassador animals including the only white (leucistic) screech owl in the world. His name is Luna and he is five years old now. I added a picture of my son with Luna at Fisherman’s Village. They also sell great shirts, one of which I am modeling at the boardwalk near the center. It is one of the most amazing places you will ever visit where you can see the wildlife of Florida very up close and personal!
Peace River Wildlife Center is a very well managed nonprofit. The very small professional staff has no personnel turnover although the pay for the professionals is extremely low. The people working here are dedicated to care for our Wildlife. A very large number of volunteers share in that same dedication.
If you have not visited PRWC I urge you to make a visit and become involved in the mission.
