national campaigns budget priorities as part of its move the money campaign, paef has continued to build its grassroots movement and alliances with social and economic justice groups at the local and national level to move various stakeholders, influence public opinion and impact the debate in washington. Working with our coalition partners and allies in congress, the peace movement has strengthened its call for sharp cuts in military spending. Since the onset of the cold war, consideration of military budget requests has resembled a rubber stamp process, channeling trillions of dollars to the pentagon and nuclear weapons programs. All the while the nation's infra-structure suffered neglect and major problems of poverty and environmental degradation. The challenges of providing the population with top quality education and health care took a back seat. Paef's move the money demands are gaining greater traction as the debate of federal budget priorities continues without resolution. Nuclear disarmament peace action education fund participates in the nuclear weapons working group, the alliance for nuclear accountability and the fissile materials working group to coordinate advocacy and actions around a broad range of issues from advocacy for a un approved nuclear ban treaty. In the first year of trump's term in office, peace action education fund mobilized its network in opposition to the trump administration's exorbitant and hypocritical proposal to increase spending for the approximately 1 trillion over the next 30 years on these and other plans for 'modernization'. Justice not war iran: peace action education fund played a significant role in winning a peace accord that ended the crisis over iran's nuclear program. In 2017, peace action continued to track and oppose legislation to impose sanctions or take other measures that would undermine the accord. Much of paef's work has centered on preventing those who favor threats and intimidation over diplomacy from winning a new round of punishing sanctions to force iran to knuckle under. Such measures poison negotiations and potentially lead to military action. Over the course of 2017, paef focused grassroots pressure on congress and the administration through a series of mail, phone and email alerts to paef activist network. This work continued long after completion of the accord as opponents continued to attempt to unravel the deal. Isis and the war on yemen: the advance of the so-called islamic state (sometimes referred to as isis) in iraq and syria caught the us national security apparatus by surprise. In 2017, trump proposed a sustained bombing campaign and an increase in us troops deployed. Paef mobilized grassroots support for a negotiated settlement to the syrian civil war and has continued to press for full and, as is the case with our work on afghanistan, open debate in congress on the required authorization of military force. Paef made educational resources about isis available to its members and provided regular updates on fast moving events in the region. The war on yemen, where a u. S. Backed coalition, led by saudi arabia, executes a ruthless bombing campaign hospitals, schools and other civilian targets have been destroyed. Paef continued its work to block the arms sales and military aid to saudi arabia and its allies. Afghanistan: in trump's first year in office, there was little movement in terms of strategy and funding for the war on afghanistan. However, working with congressional allies, paef continued to press for a policy alternative to the authorization for the use of military force, the fig leaf the bush, obama and now trump administrations used to justify military campaigns throughout the world.
