I went to adopt a dog at Paws Place. I felt age discrimination at play there. I am an older woman in great shape and have been a runner and hiker my whole life. After being put through their stringent adoption policy. I was told she didn’t think I could handle the dog I wanted because he needed a lot of exercise and I was not up to it. I really should them for age discrimination and I may do it.
I volunteered for about 6 months in 2016-17. I helped clean kennel cages. I was never advised as to animals who were unprovoked biters or had emotional issues. I walked into kennels, unknowing about any animals temperament, thinking if they didn’t tell me anything, this dog is fine. I found out from other volunteers that wasn’t the case. Another time there was a dog who “disappeared” from the kennel and no one talked about where the dog went.
I went on to volunteer at another rescue kennel which is very upfront concerning their operations.
As long as the current Director of Operations (Peggy) is in charge, I highly recommend that you choose a different dog rescue for your volunteer work. I volunteered at Paws Place from August 2014 until July 2018. I walked dogs, I transported a special dog on nearly daily outings in my pickup truck, I conducted neighborhood donations of food and money, I got Paws Place into a national fundraising campaign with the federal government, I donated money, I photographed dogs for the website and Facebook and I conducted the Holiday Food Drive. I was "fired" as a volunteer by Peggy after a volunteer meeting because I asked her a question about how she handled one dog versus another. Peggy told me I was not welcome to return.
