Parks & Trails New York does much of its work in partnerships and collaborations. For example, it has pulled together an alliance of people and groups that are working to complete the Erie Canalway Trail along the famous canal between Buffalo and Albany. When finished, this multi-use trail will be a world-class bicycle tourism destination. Similarly, PTNY is part of a coalition advocating for construction of the Champlain Canalway Trail. And the organization provides technical and financial support to numerous local communtiies seeking to build their own trails to help residents be more active. But PTNY also plays a visible leadership role on important issues. A few years ago when a previous governor sought to close some state parks to reduce the budget, for instance, it rallied public opinion to keep that from happening.
Parks and Trails NY has provided our small volunteer organization with valuable input and practical assistance in our mission to promote and protect our local bike-hike trail. Staff members are always available to answer questions and offer suggestions. PTNY was particular helpful and encouraging when we set up our Canalway Trail Ambassador program in 2008, getting public officials and state entities on board and lining up funding to cover our start-up costs.
