Mission: The vision of the parenting cottage is to build a strong community by first building strong families. The vision is implemented through the delivery of program services, adhering to the agency's mission statement of providing hope, education, resources and encouragement to families with children ages 0 - kindergarten entry.
Programs: The parenting cottage provided a broad range of educational services to families in lubbock county, including the implementation of an in home visitation program utilizing a nationally recognized curriculum, parents as teachers, that provides parenting education, early childhood development education and tools for parents to move their family towards self-sufficiency, increasing the strength of the family unit and their ability to sustain their family. The majority of families served present with multiple challenges including lack of basic resources, incomes below the poverty level, low educational attainment and inadequate or inaccurate knowledge of early childhood development. Other high risk factors for family stability include first time parents, single parents, and teen parents. The parents as teachers program served approximately 200 families benefitting in excess of 400 children with 2,300 hours of early childhood education and parenting education through home visitation in 2017. The agency also served an additional 300 families through group parenting initiatives providing an additional 2,300 hours of parenting education. The agency provided a car seat safety program for the community which assists low income families in obtaining a car seat after attending an educational class in the use and installation of car seats. Safe riders measures the benefit to the community in terms of injury prevention to infants and children and estimated the parenting cottage program provided over $878,000 in preventative injury services to the community in 2017, distributing over 300 car seats.
