I originally found Papayago Rescue House when I needed to board my cockatiel. They were very knowledgeable and kind and were able to help me be a better bird mom. After my cockatiel passed away, I came back to adopt another bird. Going through the adoption process has shown me how much passion, empathy, and care goes into the rescue.
I knew I wanted to adopt a bird but was scared about finding one who would could connect to my husband and I. Maria walked us through the process and had us do “meet and greets” with a few birds where we met an older red-bellied parrot who we really connected with.
The pre- and post-adoption support has been amazing. I never felt alone or unprepared with helping my new boy settle in. Papayago does everything in their power to take care of the birds in their care and give them the best possible chance at life. It’s amazing to have people like Maria and Brianna in this world who can help these vulnerable, highly misunderstood animals. They make the world a better place one rescue at a time.
After the passing of my cockatiel that I had for over 17 years, I knew that if I was going to have another bird in my life that it needed to be special and that I wanted to adopt and not shop. The experience at Papayago Rescue House was exactly what my heart and soul needed. Maria and Brianna really take the time to make sure your parrot companion is right for you AND that you are right for that parrot companion - they have a knack for assessing chemistry. Also, outside of the adoption experience itself, Maria and Brianna provide incredible support to help you feel comfortable and confident bringing home your new friend - you can tell that they truly care deeply about these animals and their work. I'm incredibly grateful for my new friend and for our connection - which would not have been possible without the folks at Papayago.
My husband and I are so grateful for Papayago Rescue House and all the hard work they do. They are deeply committed to vetting all birds, getting them on the right diets, placing birds with the right homes, and sending them home with all the necessary supplies. We've adopted 5 wonderful cockatiels in total from them over the past 4 years, and 2 have required post-adoption communication regarding medical care. Our emails have always been promptly answered with appropriate guidance and patience. PRH also offers a significant panel of pre-adoption disease testing/bloodwork which is greatly appreciated!
The wonderful ladies at Papayago Rescue House are amazing! Everything that they do is out of love and concern for our feathered friends & family members. They go above and beyond anything I’ve ever seen! They are true miracle workers! God Bless them all!!

When I was looking to adopt a bird after losing my beloved conure to old age, I did a lot of research and quickly realized Papayago Rescue House was the place to go. Not only do they care for their rescued birds’ physical needs with adequate housing, healthy foods, and expert vet care, Maria & Brianna make sure that potential adopters are matched with the right parrot through detailed applications and “meet & greet” sessions. When I first went there, I was not looking to adopt another conure, but what did I end up getting? A senior conure whom I’m madly in love with and who is the perfect bird for me. They also continue to be available to adopters after you get a bird. I will continue to support Papayago through donations whenever possible and encourage others to do the same.
We’ve been part of the Papayago family for four years now, and I truly mean “family.” The support from all PRH members and their amazing volunteers has been invaluable. We’ve learned so much about caring for our feathered friends, knowledge we never expected to gain. The treatment they receive is exceptional, and the care during their stays is unmatched. Thank you, PRH, for everything you do!
GRACIAS!

Papayago Rescue house is a wonderful rescue. They really take care of the parrots there by giving them a proper diet, water, clean cages, toys, and medicine for parrots who are sick or need medical attention. I have adopted 3 birds from them and the staff and personnel are very friendly and helpful and the CEO Maria Sullivan and th ED Brianna have taught me so much on how to care for parrots, how to clean there cages, how to aid parrots in case of emergency, and they have given me so much knowledge about parrots and I will forever be grateful for it. Papayago Rescue House has done a fantastic job for the birds and the community.
So many lost birds would not have a safe place to go if it weren't for Papayago. They have taken in so many lost parakeets, cockatiels, and conures. They may or may not have been "set free" but they can't live out there without assistance. Very thankful that Papayago can and does rescue the birds that everyone thinks are "ok", "friendly", and "healthy" to find out they are not but with their care, they heal. It's not just a rescue in name only.
I have been a volunteer with Papayago for almost four years now. I have met so many kindred souls here — both human and avian. Maria and Brianna are so very dedicated, knowledgeable, and kind. They always put the well-being of the birds first and foremost and have made personal sacrifices to do so. I love watching them interact with the birds — the love is so apparent and mutual. This has truly been a life-enriching experience for me. I am so grateful for Papayago’s existence!

I have been a volunteer with Papayago for about a year and a half. What a wonderful experience this has been!! The leaders of the flock (so to speak) are so very dedicated and knowledgeable. I have learned so much from them. They are true advocates for parrots. They always put the well-being of the birds first and foremost and have made personal sacrifices to do so. The birds are well-cared for and get plenty of love from Maria and Brianna and their wonderful staff. I so look forward to my volunteer days! If I lived closer, I’d be there every day! Thank God for Papayago — what would these precious creatures do without them?
These amazing people have a great love for birds! They assisted me in microchipping 2 of my crazy birds and also did a great job with beak trims and nail trims. My birds are very crazy stressed birds and they did great with handling them and keeping them calm. If you have birds or a are looking to adopt one recommend Papayago Rescue House
I love volunteering here because everyone is super helpful and knowledgeable and you can tell the leaders here have a true passion for birds/parrots and their wellbeing.
I am truly honored to write this review for Papayago Rescue House, a non-profit organization that is so dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and caring for parrots. Every one of their volunteers is an angel, working tirelessly to ensure the wellbeing of these magnificent birds.
Their commitment and passion are nothing short of extraordinary. When I needed to move to another country for personal reasons, I made the difficult decision to leave my beloved parrots in their care. My parrots are like my children to me, and I wanted only the best for them. I trusted Papayago with all my heart, knowing they would be cared for with utmost love, dedication, and expertise.
The team of wonderful people at Papayago goes above and beyond, caring for each parrot with their hearts, minds, and souls. Their facility is a haven, where every bird receives the attention and care they deserve. Witnessing their hard work and devotion firsthand is truly inspirational.
Even though I am now in one of the most southern part of the continent, my belief in their mission and the work they do has only grown stronger. Therefore, I decided to volunteer using technology, hoping to contribute in any small way I can, because I believe so deeply in what they do.
Thank you, PRH, for everything you do. You have inspired me and filled me with hope, knowing that my parrots and so many others are in the best hands possible.
With endless gratitude ,
Silvana Teresa

Life brings you sometimes unexpected situations, that you have very little control over them. Sickness, losing your job, divorce, death, among others. Those are the situations when you need reliable people to have your back and support you going through the storm. Well, that kind of people are Papayago, for me and for my birdies. Life have brought me very hard personal times this year and I need to relocate to another country. One of my deepest concerns and sufferings of leaving the country is that I won’t be able to take my birdies with me. They are family to me and I must leave them behind. This breaks my heart. The angels of Papayago were sent by God for this moment. They will take care of my sweet babies, so I can visit every time I come back to town. I am going literally to the other pole, so theses visits won’t be as frequent as I wish, but I know deep inside that they will be in good hands, the best hands. I have become a volunteer of this wonderful organization because I believe in the way they handle their mission, which has become my mission too. I will be helping even I will be overseas. Helping financially, volunteering online and in person every time I am in town. Last year, they boarded my babies for 6 months while I had to be in the other pole dealing with very difficult situations in my life, but Papayago had my back, they took care of my babies and they did fine. I know this time won’t be different! Thank God for Papayago !!
I have been volunteering at Papayago for over 3 years and I wouldn't know what I would do without it. Maria and Brianna have become part of my family. I always look forward to going in and being greeted by all the wonderful birds. Last week a call came in about a soon to be abandoned African Grey. Within 30 minutes Brianna and I were on the road to pick her up. She is now a resident of Papayago until she finds her forever family. This is really the BEST parrot rescue, hands down!

I can’t say enough good words about Papayago Rescue House. I acquired a 30+ year old African grey from a close friend. We had him for 6-months and he passed suddenly. Shortly after we purchased a grey from a breeder in NC. It wasn’t to long after that we heard about Papayago. I learned about them from our vet and have been an unbelievable resource since then. Three years later, I now volunteer two days a week and continue to learn from them. They are amazing and would not know what to do without them. Maria and Brianna are like family and regardless of the day/time, the birds always come first. I have attached a few pictures of us taking the birds out for sun/showers.
Through a variety of obstacles thrown at my life I found myself in the care of my childhood parrot while I was in a point in my life where I could not give her the care that she deserved. I knew I had to find a new home for her. Maria at Papayago made what was the hardest thing I have ever done a little easier. She posted updates on how she was doing and personally would send me emails on her progress. A few years ago my old friend found her forever home and I am very happy for her. If it was not for this organization who knows where my friend would be. Like most of us I am in therapy and although I still think of my friend a lot I am able to find peace in the fact that she is happy and has the life she deserves. Thank you!
My name is Chris. I have been struggling with many things since I got out of the military in 2015. It has been a long and, what seems like, a lonely journey. I had always wanted to get a service animal. I never had the time to take care of a dog nore could I give a cat the attention it need because I'm almost never home. Another veteran said I should look into getting a bird.
So I looked into it and called all the shelters and rescues I could. I finally called the right one, because someone actually answered. I had a long talk with Maria and told her everything I was looking for and she told me everything I would need to know about this process. I decided it was in my best interest to start finding a companion that would fit into my Chaotic life that I could take anywhere.
I was introduced to Libby. I think it is safe to say that Libby and I hit it off right away. Libby had a character that seemed to fit me comfortably. After a long time and many visits, I was finally able to bring Libby home with me.
It has been a little of 4 weeks now and it feels like I have had her forever. She is that missing piece that fell into place in my life. With Libby in my life, I have noticed a positive change in my daily life.
Thank you to Maria and the Papayago Rescue House. You have all made life better for both Libby and I.
Maria and her team are truly the best. They are professional and work with the community for the greater good of our feathered friends. I adopted a budgie from Papayago, to give my other rescue budgie a friend after the loss of one of our other budgies. They work hard and the world is a better place bc of Papayago.

We were so happy to find Papayago nearby. It is very hard to find places that will board birds and actually know how to care for them. The staff at Papayago are extremely knowledgeable about birds, and really care for their wellbeing. I am very comfortable boarding my cockatiel there, knowing he gets the best possible care.
I admire their commitment to rescuing parrots and finding homes for them. It takes special people to give these birds a safe place.
I'm so thankful we found Papayago. We are new bird owners and needed to board our two conures for the first time. I was very anxious about it but Brianna kept in touch with us via email and even sent photos. They also helped transition our birds from seed to pellets and weighed them each day to make sure they were eating and gaining weight. Brianna also gave me advice on what to do with certain behaviors she saw in our birds and I appreciate it so much. We will definitley use Papayago anytime we need boarding and will love to support them.
This is a sad story, so far. A few years ago, I needed to visit my daughter for a week and bringing my Cockatoo wasn't an option. I was torn, but had no choice. I found Papayago Rescue House boarded exotic birds and communicated with Bri, who taught me quite a bit in a short time. I left my sweet companion in their hands and felt totally certain she would be lovingly cared for while I enjoyed my trip. As a few years passed, my health, already bad, significantly deteriorated. I spent 11 days in the hospital last year and constantly worried about my angelbird. I was living with family members who literally hated her and knew if I died, she'd be sold to the first buyer who came along, whether they knew anything about exotic birds or not, and the chances were high she'd end up going from one place to another, abused and more. I couldn't bear it. I connected again with Papayago House. She's now safe there, receiving the absolute best possible care and being readied for the right guy (she LOVES men) or family to come and make her a permanent companion/family member. Someone much younger than I am who will love and respect her awesomeness, grace, youth, intelligence and beauty as much as I did. I will love and miss her till the day I die. Tears are rolling down my face as I write this. It hurts so much! BUT, I have 100% confidence and peace that I did the absolute best for my precious Cockatoo by putting her into the hands of these awesome bird saviors-lovers-caregivers I will be eternally grateful to have had them to go to and I'm glad I didn't just leave the task up to a family member who would have left her alone and suffering after my passing. She deserves only the very best and has many more decades left to experience joy. I pray for a very happy ending to this synopsis.
They work wonders to help parrots and educate the community on how to properly care for them. They assist in boarding when you're out of town and help lost birds find their way back home. They also teach kids about how we as humans can stop taking parrots from their natural enviornments and stop from breeding them. This rescue is all about the parrots!
Upon moving to Atlanta, I wanted to volunteer somewhere that makes a difference in terms of conservation and animal welfare. I wanted an experience which would help further my understanding of parrots and bettering my parrot’s life. They not only provided valuable insight into parrot care but science-backed resources on parrot welfare. We also love the fact they have boarding, grooming, and classes available too. We love supporting Papayago!

I adopted my Umbrella Cockatoo, Nina, from Papayago on September 12, 2020. I received so much education, and they continue to provide all of us adopters ongoing support after the adoption process is complete. They continue to research, learn, and provide education for adopters ongoing. The process ensures that you are prepared for this amazing, and sometimes trying, journey with your new companion. They don't turn away a parrot in need, and they provide the best care and environment possible for these amazing creatures as they prepare them for a new home. I'm in awe of their amazing work, and I am reminded daily how much of a difference they truly make when I get my sweet Nina up for the day. Thank you Papayago for all the hard work you do!

Papayago makes it their mission to educate the public, rehabilitate birds in need, and rehome those birds when possible to loving new families. Although the process may seem slow for those seeking to adopt a new family member, it is a process that allows a love match to be made, and then the bonding process begin. Because birds are very different from domesticated pets, they require multiple visits to ensure that the placement will be successful. Some bonds will happen more quickly, but Papayago wants you to be prepared to care for this companion that may outlive you. Birds are amazing little individuals, and Papayago understands that people often get birds on a whim when they are unprepared, which leads to birds being neglected or relinquished. #adoptdontshop
My favorite parrot rescue! I have visited Papayago twice by appointment and I have never seen a facility care more for the wellbeing, enrichment, saftety and happiness of their birds! Every animal is loved and cared for. This rescue is one of very few parrot rescues in the southeast and have taken in so many precious birds who have nowhere else to go. The birds are only adopted out to people they like, which is why it takes visiting several times to see how things go. Exactly how it should be! Excellent place to contact if you are looking to potentially add to your flock!
Our boy wouldn’t be alive without Papayago!!
About 6 months ago, our oldest Caique began asphyxiating after swallowing a treat too quickly. We took them to an emergency vet that gave some very very suspicious advice. We reached out to Maria and Brianna to review the medical recommendations (as well as the outrageous pricing) and they quickly recommended checking him out of that clinic and bringing them elsewhere for medical attention. Within an hour, they had provided an oxygen tank, a medical encasement, and an appointment with a board certified avian yet in another state for the next day. If not for them, our baby would not be alive today, I’m sure of it. I cannot thank or recommend PRH enough!!!
I have been a volunteer, monetary supporter, and customer of Papayago Rescue House for many years now. I have owned a Senegal for over 30 years and was looking for a place that I could volunteer at and also partner with to support that I felt comfortable to board my bird with and that took great care of the birds in their care full time. I also wanted to learn more about veterinary care, nutrition, enrichment, and rescue in general.
I fostered a 40+ y/o Goffin’s which I eventually adopted from Papayago. They are so supportive and concerned about their birds and the proper placement of birds in the right homes. They choose you… not the other way around, which is as it should be, considering what many of these birds have been through. I can always access information online…get updates on care and schedule boarding. There are also educational opportunities you can attend.
In general, bird rescue and care is evolving as we all grow and learn to do better and Papayago is one of those places that is not afraid to change when they learn to do something better! I appreciate this and love that they share new knowledge with us as patrons as it becomes available.
I hope that Papayago will continue to be there to support our bird community in the years to come.
I cannot imagine trying to navigate the complicated world of exotic pet care without them!

I help feed and care for the birds in residence at Papayago Rescue House as a “Kitchen Mom”. Over the last year I have learned a lot about nutrition and enrichment for the birds at the rescue and my flock at home.
They are so caring and loving with the birds in their care and make me feel like part of the family.
As they continue educate me and the public I hope they are able to prosper and grow in positive ways that benefit these lovely creatures and their environment.
Thank you Papayago for all that you do!
I found Wonderland. This place is crazy and beautiful and chaotic and wonderful and everything peculiar and filled with so much love and joy all at the same time.
I came to volunteer here after a very hard period in my life. Let me just say that this place is LIFE. CHANGING. I learned so so much about parrots and how to care for them, I learned things about myself, and I watched myself grow as a person when volunteering. One of main things I love about this place are the people. The owners, other volunteers and such are all amazing people. The CEO, Maria Sullivan, I truly believe is a parrot whisperer. She puts so much time and dedication toward learning more about these birds and getting people to understand their care and needs and it is incredible. The Executive Director, Brianna Stoddard, is equally as amazing. She knows how to keep everyone in high spirits along with having a very special bond with these birds. She knows every in and out of the rescue and will always be there to help. I also accidentally got a cockatoo as a best friend, so much so, that I got a tattoo in her honor! I have so many stories and memories there and I can’t wait to make more! I’m in college out of state at the moment but when I get the chance; I can wait to go home, back to Wonderland.
I've been volunteering at the Papayago Rescue House for the past year. The hours I spend there are the happiest and most rewarding of my entire week. The people who manage and volunteer are some of the finest people I have ever met. Their love and dedication to the birds is unmatched. The birds are treated with kindness and love.
Birds are a unique pet to own as they require much more than a pat on the head or a scratch behind the ear. Birds typically "choose" the person they want to bond with and that's what this rescue does so well. They make sure there is a connection between the adopter and the adoptee. Many of these birds have the intelligence of a three year old child. They have very individual and distinct personalities and that is why that connection is vital in the success of the adoption.
I would highly recommend that anyone who is considering welcoming a bird into their family to contact the Papayago Rescue House and to see if there is a bird that would fill that void in their life. And the great thing about the rescue administrative staff is their outstanding followup training and support.
Again, this rescue has brought a true feeling of joy to my life and I would encourage anyone with a desire to serve to look into volunteering at the Papayago Rescue House.
Maria is awesome she truly cares so much about these birds and their health. I adopted Jelly Bean a 3 year old Sun Conure from her after careful consideration from Maria. She helped find jelly bean her forever home with us and we couldn’t have done it without Maria and her organization.
Papayago Rescue is an amazing Rescue , I adopted my Grey almost 3 years ago and they are still there for me when I need them and they are not only there for my adopted 1 they are they for my other Grey I’ve had for 17 years !
They post so much information that sometimes you think you know it all then you read their files and your like wow I never new that ! They help you with anything you may reach out to them about the bird and if even they are unsure of the answer they will research it until they can try and help you out with the problem !
They reach out to all their adoptees just to make sure things are going well and if you may need help with anything , once you adopt from them you are family they don’t say ok have a nice life with your bird they become family and always wants to see pictures or just be there if you need help !
This is Livingston, 3 yrs ago he was being adopted so he can live out his geriatric life in a loving home today he’s still learning to step up , he will do it but it takes a few minutes for him to step up lol but today I hold him 4 to 5 times a day , he likes just going from room to room and exploring or we just sit on the deck listening to the birds and we just chill !
Ty Papayago Rescue for the love and support you have given to all of us !

I met the Papayagos Rescue House, Inc. through a friend . I would go often with her and was just so amazed on how many unwanted birds they had , wether the bird was unwanted or the owners fell on hard times or even passed away , the Rescue made sure to take them in and work on rehabilitating them if they needed it to find the perfect home with another person ! Finally after a year or so I decided to adopt a Grey , I already have 1 and thought she needed a friend so the Rescue had me visit with the bird until they we’re sure the bird was a perfect match and well that’s what’s so special about Papayagos, unless they know the bird is a perfect fit they will not let them be adopted ! They love those birds so much and they just want to make sure the bird will be happy with their new flock ! This is Sir Livingston that I adopted over a month ago and I’m just so in love with this old man ! Well he is about 35 yrs old but he has taken my heart ❤️
In times of Covid, my youngest son aroused an interest in birds that caught my attention. At that time we had three parakeets at home. He began searching the internet for bird rescue sites and found Papayago Rescue House. Without a doubt, it has been one of the best experiences we’ve had as a family in recent years.
We adopted our first PRH birds two years ago (Stewie and Orgie) and today he and I are part of this extraordinary organization as volunteers and foster parents.
Maria and Brianna have been two essential people in our lives. Not only have they taught us the care and respect that we have to have with our birds, but they have also awakened our interest in constantly learning new things about them and being updated with the latest information. We understand that the commitment we have adopted requires a lot of responsibility and being prepared is the best we can do for them.
The love, dedication and commitment they have to PRH and to each of these birds is incredible. My family and I are and will always be very grateful for the great work they do.
Papayago cares deeply about their surrendered parrots! Even the ones who have been adopted out. This non-profit and all of their volunteers and extremely kind and smart vet techs truely put the needs of the birds first. All of the hard work that goes into this shelter really means the world to these birds and I can tell. The parrots are all lovely and wonderful creatures with intelligence that will blow you away no matter how small they are.
We just love them, they are so helpful any time we have a question or need a cute picture to look at. We are so glad we found Maria and the rescue group the 4 musketeers are really a great addition to our family. The Schmook Family
Papayago Rescue is just an amazing Rescue , they love and care for all the birds with all their hearts along with their volunteers!
I wasn’t sure I wanted another African Grey I have 1 and if anyone knows Greys they can be a lot of work to take care of and need a lot of time with their flock but I kept on looking at 1 they had in the Rescue , his name was Sir Livingston and finally I asked for a meet and greet with him and from the 1st day he was meant to be mine !
What’s truly amazing though with them is they just don’t let birds be adopted out they make sure it is a match for both the bird and the human which is awesome because it’s less of a chance the bird will be returned ! They have you spend time with the bird and read or sing to them just so they get to know you !
They also teach you things you may of never thought of that your bird may need or require for the birds health ! They just truly are an Amazing Rescue !
The two ladies who run this : Maria Sullivan and Brianna Stoddard (along with all their volunteers ) are absolutely amazing ! They do incredible work and are extremely knowledgeable and willing to share when it comes to the well being of the feathered friends under their care. My little cockatoo Sammi wouldn’t be alive today if it weren’t for them. I can’t thank them enough for all they do. When you support this organization you can feel good knowing you’re supporting a great cause and give a voice to animals who would otherwise not have one .
If you love birds and believe they should all be loved and well cared for and deserve a good life then this is an organization you should support.
Papayago is, without a doubt, an incredible, classy, loving, conscientious all for the sake of the birds establishment. We’ve had the opportunity to visit Papayago on more than one occasion. My son loved Papayago so much that we drove.3 hours so he could return to volunteer. Visiting Papayago is a pleasure. Its cozy, inviting, clean, and quiet ,considering its residents. I adore the meet and greet area. Its comfortable, homey. Its a hard place to leave. We adopted an African Grey this year, Mickey. And, our son is a foster dad to a Dusky Pionus, Cooper. Maria Sullivan was and continues to be coach Sullivan to my bird world. Shes a mentor to my son. Ive learned a lot about how little I really know sometimes. Maria fills in the details. She posts great articles, she explains, & she follows up. Maria is invested in Mickeys adoption. Her love for Mickey is obvious. I understand why its necessary for her to say a quick goodbye. I admire her ability to love and let go. Papayago set us up for adoption success. Papayago has reasonable expectations of adopters, as they should. We have a Co2 alarm, a temp/humidity gauge &. CO2 detector, 5 feet from Mickeys home.. details that I would not know on my own.
Mickey is microchipped & fully vetted.
We love Mickey. Our adoption story is almost a ridiculous success. She is so right for our family that I literally have not a single complaint or issue with Mickey. Maria knew she was a match for our family. She knows every one of her residents.
Brianna Stoddard can tell me Mickeys weight in 5 seconds. She documents and she knows the residents so well. Brianna calmed my trimming toenails anxiety. Shes skilled in her ability to handle the uncomfortable necessities that the residents aren’t really thrilled about. . And, melt my heart with volunteers, reading a book to a resident.
Papayago has ignited an unrealized passion in my son. He is winning over the heart of a very independent Cooper. Maria is there for him every step of the way. Papayago sets the bar high in the world of parrot rescue. Papayago is a poster child of what a parrot rescue should be. We love Papayago.
I’m so grateful to have found Papayago. Maria and Brianna are extremely knowledgeable, experienced and easy to work with. They perfectly matched me to Penzie, my African Grey. Everyone I’ve met at Papayago have been friendly and caring bird lovers ready to provide helpful information, encouraging words and continuing support to help you bond and have a successful relationship with your adopted bird.
Papayago does a great job after the adoption in creating an active group of adopting parents to help us share with one another. The resources they provide go deep and wide with information to help you navigate just about any situation you might encounter from health issues, training issues, nail and beak trimming, and nutritional needs and more. I’m glad to be a part of their adopted family.
I started out going for my little cockatiel's nail trim when I first moved back to the area from S. Florida. Such a pleasure to go in and meet everyone. They were kind, understanding and loving to my little hen and made me feel like they thought she was so special (which she is, of course ;)). Coming from an area where bird ownership is prevalent, it was a little oasis to find Papayago and the support they provide. Their facility is clean and they have an engaging relationship with each rescued bird, with an emphasis on overall wellness and enrichment for each bird and finding them just the right home, despite the growing costs of veterinary/medicinal fees for so many birds that come in with ailments. They are kind, patient and appreciative of their donors and volunteers and are genuinely invested in providing a sanctuary for their birds.
I found Papayago looking for volunteer opportunities as I love animals and work (funny enough); Papayago was everything I could have hoped for. I love volunteering with them. It’s such a welcoming and kind atmosphere. Every single person from Maria, Bri, Megan and the other volunteers are always doing their best. They care for each and every bird, and never give up on any of them. They have allowed these birds a second chance, giving them the love they deserve. Not only do they rescue birds but educate and help others take care of their own birds. I couldn’t be more proud to be a part of an organization. Such amazing work!
We reached out to Papayago originally for boarding. But to be honest, this was also a trial run to see how Athena did at the rescue. There had been many changes in our lives since we had gotten her as a baby, and we owned a pineapple conure and we truly thought we were ready for a macaw (even including her in my will) But reality clashed with what we thought we knew. As her primary attachment, my daughter was dual-enrolled in high school and college. We were having increasing problems managing Athena. We were still diligently doing everything - fresh veggies and fruits, singing her our bedtime song, working with her; and she was never alone in an active household. But I was becoming the primary caretaker, but not the primary attachment - Athena would scream for my daughter. We asked for help - and got it from Marie and Brianna - and we even taught her how to howl like a wolf to call for my daughter (we have huskies and it made sense since she already liked to bark with them.) But I could see - long term, this situation was going to deteriorate. Eventually, I talked bluntly with Marie about surrendering Athena. I spent the first time in tears in the car after talking to her. I have never surrendered an animal in my life. But I also knew we were on a dangerous cliff where we had a happy, well-adjusted bird, and I didn't want to have that change. After more boarding to see if Athena adjusted well without us, we surrendered her. This has been one of the hardest decisions I've made in recent history - and probably the hardest my daughter has ever made. I will forever be grateful that Papayago exists and for the kindness and support we received - not harsh judgment - during this process. I would encourage others to help keep this rescue house vibrant. None of us know when we might need their help, and I know that Athena will be rehomed with a new love that has the time and energy to make sure she continues to be a happy, sweet macaw.
What is not to love about PRH! What is not to be thankful with PRH!
It has been almost a year since I wrote my first review about this rescue. At that time I was devastated because my 16 year old jenday conure was going through multifactorial and some unknown anxiety attacks that translated in severe feather plucking. After doing as much as I could, vets visits, medication, spending hours and hours with him, being a believer, I prayed and God directed me to PRH. I am so very thankful for it. They took my little on into the rescue for a healing process that lasted several months. They work with him, re trained him with new habits. For instance: He was used to seed mix, he eats pellets now. He likes to forage for his food , which keeps him busy, active and focus on other things but his feathers. He even found a friend there. Portillo, my jenday , had lost his long life friend (my beloved sun conure) and probably that was another factor that contributed to the plucking. There was a spark between Portillo and his new friend, spark that was recognized by the wonderful people at PRH. To the people that have birds, we know that takes a LOT of experience to notice these sparks and to train two little ones to be together. PRH did it!!! Therefore, I a a new mom to Gabriella, Portillo's friend.Yes, Gabriella, a beautiful sunconure that arrived to the rescue and needed to find a family that loved her. Well, she has one now. Portillo and Gabriella are with us now enjoying their new life . And I..., well I am happy too, feeling more informed, wiser and well supported to be a better mom for them, thank to PRH, who do not live you alone in the process when you adopt or need to rehab a little feather one. Could not be more thankful!!
Papayago has a unique style of matching people with parrots that is nothing short of magical. I noticed Damien, a big macaw, because he liked saying "BYE BYE" when people left and it made me laugh. I asked him if he wanted to step up, but then I chickened out because...well...because he's a BIG bird and I was scared. Maria told me to give him a minute to let him decide, and I did, and he stepped up and was the sweetest old guy I've ever met. Then I began to visit him because he was such a nice guy. Long story short, I adopted a Blue and Gold Macaw! The process was straightforward and yet there was so much love and guidance involved it seemed magical.
Coming home with Damien was not easy and PRH coached me through how to get used to living with a 50 year old parrot that needed some rules and TLC. They helped me with what diet and toys he needed and so far things have been a delightful adventure.
I'm so grateful to have found such a heart filled, intuitive and loving place that finds homes for these amazing parrots that need us.
The ladies at Papayago are very caring, knowledgeable and understanding and helped me tremendously in my decision with my parrot. The care that they give the birds is outstanding and it is obvious they are on a mission of love to help birds and their people~
My first volunteer experience here was great and fun! They are very organized, tech savvy, involved in the community, and every bird has a clean cage and gets high quality pellets as well as fresh foods of course. The Assistant Director Megan is very friendly. Everyone here has a real passion for correct, healthy bird care.
I am so grateful for Papayago Rescue House. I adopted my first Papayago bird two years ago. My second Papayago bird came home this summer. Both times, the Papayago staff worked with my family and the birds to figure out a great fit. I love my birds, and they love me! The staff and volunteers have helped me with my unique birds and their needs. I feel secure that any time I have a question or need help, Papayago will support me. I feel great about going out of town knowing that my birds are in the capable hands of people who know and love them. Papayago has created a caring community for bird people. As a volunteer, I feel valued and respected. Papayago is always a cheerful, happy place to be.

I adopted a fantastic Indian ringneck parakeet from Papayago a year ago. Our adoption process helped match our family with the right bird for us (and the right family for her). She has been a joy, and when she's not, we turn to Papayago for advice and support to get us through the moment or season. When we adopted our pet, we were reassured because of the support, and because of the services such as boarding that ensured our bird was going to keep getting the care she needed. The Papayago folks show great love and support for the birds and the people! Our family has enjoyed getting involved with volunteering and interacting with the special birds who don't live in our house.
Papayago Rescue House is doing a great job of helping parrots who need homes, people who are interested in parrots, and people with parrots. My wife and I board our macaw there two or three times a year and I’ve helped them with some education and fundraising some. And we donate since we believe in their cause and quality.
Note that I’ve helped other rescues and served on the board at another parrot rescue for several years prior to it closing due to owner retirement. I’ve also been president of the local parrot club.
I have been involved with Papayago Rescue House for about 5 years now and my administration for them still continues to grow.
There are not many rescues who put as many hours of research in as the PRH do in order to better the physical, mental and emotional health, not just of the birds in their care but those living in homes everywhere.
The birds at Papayago are given the best of diets, opportunities to make decisions for themselves, and lots of love. They are not turned away or looked down upon because they are sick or have severe behavioral issues. Those birds are given the same respect and love that the others get.
One of my own birds had a medical emergency earlier this year. It was late in the evening and he needed emergency intervention so I took him to Papayago. They saved his life. And as a testament to what a great rescue Papayago is, he is still there with them now because in being there he is the happiest I have ever seen him.
Papayago Rescue house is truly committed to the care and welfare of parrots and people.
Earlier this week I went to visit Papayago's and was so impressed. The reason for my visit was to evaluate their set up, the cleanness of their building, and how their birds looked and acted. Several people were busy cleaning cages, floors, etc., playing with birds, and generally feeding and watering. These volunteers and staff really get to know the birds and their circumstances, and genuinely care and love the birds - this is very noticeable. I went to see if I wanted to place my birds, in the future, when I am gone or unable to care for them myself anymore. So impressed!!!
These folks have their hearts in the right place!! Their vision & purpose is strong & clear, and everything they do goes towards their goals. They never lose their focus!! Being a Pharma Rep in the Animal Health Industry, I have worked wIth numerous animal rescues, and Papayago has impressed me the most! Know that every minute of energy or dollar you spend, goes exactly where it should! They deserve your support & they’re awesome people!!!

The PRH team gives you insight about caring for your fids. They educate on chop (foods), health, DIY toys, and body language/behavior. The team helps you think outside the box and remind you of the simple things. Their love is astronomical. And, being a PRH parent makes you love them the same.

Papayago Rescue House (PRH) is more than just a non-profit agency for birds. It is more than just a place to adopt a bird. It is a community. Their mission and actions drives you to want to do more for our feather friends. The staff is dedicated to providing loving homes for deserving birds. Their level of education about birds, patience training parrots and assisting you with training your new companion is amazing. They are committed to supporting prospective/adoptive parents, and giving great instructions on training techniques. PRH is an around the clock heaven for parrots and their adoptive parents. Their welcoming nature will make your trip worthwhile.
They helped us TREMENDOUSLY with home boarding and tips for training our two Caiques!! I can’t stress enough how amazing they have been for us!!!
I had a bad first bird experience 20 yrs ago. I bought a baby, she bonded with another and developed behavioral issues that forced me to re-home her. Flash forward to a year ago when I call Papayago and they tell me how much MORE we know about parrots now and how they can help me find the right match. So they did. Was it happily ever after? Not at all. Precious has 17 years of being locked in a cage way too small for an amazon, learned biting as a fast no, and over bonds causing all kinds of aggression issues. Did Papayago tell me to deal with it, all birds bite, and to man up? Nope. They answered my calls, they recommended a behavior specialist, they provided support in all ways emotional and intellectual so that I could help both myself and my new friend. We are now 8 months together and can go on hikes (safely in a backpack), get head pets without biting, and have very few screaming sessions now along with an out of cage lifestyle. It is 100% thanks to their support AFTER adoption that has made this a success story. Of course they were also brilliant at knowing that I Precious picked ME as they take the time to understand each birds personality but I attribute our continued success to their after-adoption commitment and care. It hasn’t been easy reconditioning an abused and highly intelligent creature but, because of them, it’s getting there! I’m looking forward to DECADES of loving companionship now instead of another failure at parrot ownership thanks to them! ❤️❤️
Papayago Rescue House has dedicated their lives to helping give birds a better future. They are very knowledgeable, and take the extra steps to not only help the birds they rescue, but also help families find the perfect match to adopt.
PRH sees to it that the birds get the medical care they need, nutritious food, and lots of love.
We have adopted 3 birds from PRH. Our bird Zoey came to PRH a few years ago, her previous owner had passed away, so Zoey had became distraught and started mutilating her chest. After a few months at Papayago, Zoey started to heal, physically and emotionally.
We adopted Zoey about a year ago.
Zoey and I are very grateful for PRH, they helped her so much, and because of them, we now have Zoey, Baby Girl and Lefty as part of our family.
Our flock: Baby Girl, Lefty and Zoey.
I came to Papayago Rescue House not really knowing what I was looking for. I knew I wanted to adopt a bird, but other than that, I was along for the ride! The owners of this rescue instantly knew based on my application who would be a good fit! I got to meet many lovely birds, but ended up falling for the first one they introduced me to. Papayago has an incredibly responsible adoption process that I as an exotic animal keeper wished every rescue could apply. I had several visits with my birdie soulmate as well as a call to ensure my home was safe and secure for a new family member who could live 20+ more years. Prince Harry, as he is called, has been a light in my life now for almost two years, and Papayago has been there every step of the way to answer questions and gawk over cute photos I take. This place is top notch, THE BIRD RESCUE of Georgia. They don't just want to give birds homes, they want to do it right!
I inherited a cockatiel after my grandmother died. On my grandmothers death bed she literally asked to make sure Pat was taken care of. I knew nothing about birds and after having her a few days I knew I was in over my head. She had an infection that would come and go and we couldn’t find any vets who could help us at a reasonable price.
Finally I reached out to FB for help and someone recommended Papayago. I called them and they were more than willing to help. I surrendered her over to them, crying the whole time! But they made it easy, told me I could get her back after they got the ‘infection’ under control and helped her diet. Unfortunately, they found cancer but they have been 10000% amazing in getting her healthy again. I was emailed with updates constantly and they even gave me the option to take her back once healed. I love her and wish I could continue to care for her but I know that there is a real bird lover out there who can take care of her better so I decided to let them find her a good home. And they sure did!
This rescue is amazing!! There is literally no other way I can put it!! Thus went above and beyond! They saved Pats life and gave me peace of mind for her future!
The Papayago team is truly amazing. At the core, they are a parrot/bird rescue, but they are so much more. They are a community of bird folks that truly care. They work very hard to rehabilitate birds (both physically and emotionally), and find loving new homes for them whenever possible. I also board my birds there and know they're in great hands. Papayago also does lots of education, both formal and informal. I have a family member who just received a budgie and has no training about how to care for the little girl. Just today, I asked Papayago for help, and they provided several toy recommendations, food recommendations, cage recommendations, supplemental veggie powder, websites, FB groups, Instagram page, and all sorts of information for me to help the family provide a better home for this new baby girl. I was in grateful tears. Papayago is a TREMENDOUS asset to the bird community in the Atlanta metro area. So grateful.
Papayago has taught me so much about bird ownership. There are so many myths and so much bad information out there, I’m glad this organization is here to help people and birds. They are dedicated to making the world better for pet birds and their people.
Amazing place to volunteer, Foster, and adopt from. I can’t imagine my life without the family of this rescue anymore.
This non-profit does so much for parrots in need and deserves all the support it can get. The organizers and volunteers are wonderful, and the birds in their care get so much love, attention, and much needed treatment from an avian vet, which they rely on donations to cover. I love following them on Facebook and getting the updates on the sweet birds in their care.
Our family has learned so much from the volunteers of this non profit. They love each of those birds as their own, providing the best love, care and meeting nutritional needs that are so varied and challenging to adapt surrenders that have never had such care to. We will continue to seek out ways to help this group because we know that they will continue to serve these beautiful creatures with dignity and grace.
We are currently fostering 3 budgies, and feel like their knowledge and support is vital to our ability to best care for this sweet birdies.
I am grateful for a bird rescue in our area, and for the many services they offer from classes to answering all my questions, even if not related to foster birds. Their love and commitment to birds is contagious.
Papaygo Rescue House takes great care in placing their birds. They took a lot of time with us and introducing us to the birds they thought might fit our family and lifestyle. It took a few months to have a bird pick us and then the care of Papaygo with home visits and education for us to make sure we were ready for Nemo was top notch! The education and information and inclusion in the Papaygo family after adoption is top notch!
When a bird needs help, Papayago is there. Papayago does not shy away from the sick, the hurt, the angry or the lonely. They do all they can, loving each bird with all their hearts. After adoption, constant support is available for everyone who has adopted them. They are growing to continue to support their community.
I have never met a group of more caring, loving and supportive people. These birds are incredibly well taken care of and the vetting process for all adoptions is extensive and top notch. I encourage anyone considering a pet parrot to Adopt, not Shop! with Papayago. Go meet the birds, go volunteer and see this well oiled machine in operation! You won’t be disappointed and you will surely fall in love with the birds!
I am both a customer and a volunteer at this excellent parrot & bird rescue. Everyone here is 100% professional. More importantly, the level of care and thought they put into their care for all of the birds is readily apparent: the birds are happy, healthy and thriving in their clean and large enclosures while waiting for a loving family or individual to adopt them.
The birds who are boarded here while their owners are away receive lots of attention and photos are sent to the owners to let them know how their feathered ones are doing. I am so grateful for Papayago!
I have both worked and volunteered with a variety of rescues over the years and Papayago stands out at the top of the list of rescues that I respect and can stand behind 100%. There is no ego - which is so prevalent in the rescue community- at Papayago, everything is about the birds first. Their safety, comfort, health, emotional and physical needs are met, not easy to do when you are dealing with so many very individual personalities. There are no shortcuts in the care these birds receive. And all of them, from the tiniest finch, to the largest macaw are shown respect, love and appreciation and that allows them to thrive.
There is constant research going on to keep up with the latest and best advice from experts, veterinarians, etc..
The team at Papayago also cares for the people who they come in contact with. Bird owners who are experiencing difficulties in caring for their birds are offered assistance, adopters are made to feel like they have become part of a family so that they have a place to share their concerns and their joys. Bird owners who, for whatever reason, need to surrender their birds are not made to feel like they are horrible people for doing so. Outreach is also important and efforts are made to educate people of all ages on providing the best care for and improving the relationship with their own birds.
I’ve been volunteering with Papayago Rescue House for a year and it’s truly the most rewarding experience. Helping care for and giving love to the birds of PRH is a small contribution but it fills my heart. Not only the birds but also the people of PRH are like family to me. I adopted my dove, Mumbo, from there and he brought me so much joy. PRH was there for me in so many ways when he had health concerns and when he passed away. When you adopt from them, you have their support forever.

The care and dedication to the wellbeing of every bird at Papayago Rescue House makes it truly a special place. Maria, Brianna, Megan, and all of the volunteers provide a loving, safe, and healthy environment for so many parrots. Movies and music play for the birds’ enrichment, plenty of toys, foraging opportunities, and fresh foods are provided. It is beyond rewarding to volunteer at Papayago Rescue House.
I was looking for a friend for my umbrella cockatoo Jasper. I found the rescue house and was able to pick off of the website which friends I want to go visit. I was able to meet a few of them Maria assisted in helping me pick the one who was more willing and technically picked me. Captain Jack is a military macaw and fit in very well with my retired first sergeant husband. They get along well cap and Jack gets along well with me and with his new brother Jasper. Captain Jack is a joy to have in our home. Yes there’s times he’s loud but what do you expect from my car! He is a very well mannered bird and very loving. He loves to just walk walk walk around the house! I think the rescue for what they do to be able to rehome these birds and now I have a forever son! I appreciate the help to acclimate him our home very are very supportive in the acclamation process
We adopted Sahar in December after, weeks of trips to the rescue to spend time with her to make sure she was a good fit. She is 10 and we are her 3rd family. After a thorough home inspection and lots of time spent getting to know each other we finally brought her home. She has had some issues with ear infections and Maria and Brianna have been wonderful about taking her back to get her meds, as we were still trying to bond with her. Oral and ear twice a day was torture for us and for Sahar. We have had to send her back since for another ear infection. We are working together to make Sahar happy and healthy. I am so happy that we found these people. They are the best!!
I recently adopted an Indian Ringneck Parakeet from Papayago Rescue House. I have experience only with small birds (budgies and cockatiels), and never thought I would bring home a ringneck when I walked into the place. Maria and Brianna knows the personality of every bird under their care, and helped me find the most suitable bird for me (I am a quiet person, live by myself in an apartment, and work a full time job... not every bird can thrive with that!). I visited several times before bringing my bird home, and was amazed by the love and work they put into their birds every time I visit. It really shows! And I am perhaps most amazed by the continued support and community for every adopted bird and their parronts. The support really helped me with the worrying and anxiety that perhaps every new parront faces, just by knowing that I will have knowledgeable and experienced people to turn to if I have any questions or concerns. This is a community that truly, truly cares about and wants the best for your birds and their human companions (you!!) =)
I had to do a project for my sociology class- do some volunteer work for a day- so I went looking around and found PHR! Bri was very professional and had so much knowledge to share on her birds- knew them each and their individual personalities. I mentioned I liked to cook and work with my hands so she let me help her make the birds food and some toys for them! It was so much fun and I volunteer with her as often as I can now.
I had so much fun and really suggest it.
We found our Turkey, a 35 year old orange winged amazon, through pet finder. This search of course led us to Papayago. From the initial contact to adoption day, everyone was very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. Before adopting Turkey, we also have a 7 year old cockatiel. Not only did they care about Turkey and his well being but they extended their love and knowledge to our beloved, Elvis. They continue their love by providing resources to help make sure your bird has a long healthy life. Love, love, love Papayago Rescue House!
This is a great place if you have the real lover for birds..I love all the animals and can live with them..but the love that is shown here is just great..when I first went to meet, Maria knew exactly which one would be the best for me & my family having small children..even though I would have loved a bigger parrot they would give me the right education... My daughter just loves spending time with jade..and it's a joy when you get home you have another baby screaming for you along with your own children..I have recommended this place to many of my friends and family..
.
Recently I started volunteering with Papayago Rescue House. They are great people doing great work to help rehabilitate and find loving homes for our feathered friends. To be honest, I don't know how they do all the awesome work they do given the huge demand and the amount of birds that come to be under their care. I'm proud to volunteer with this group and the good work they do makes a difference in the lives of so many birds.
I adopted a senior nanday conure from Papayago. They took their time reviewing the application (I was a first-time bird owner) and checked out out my living space, which lets me know they care about their birds' well being. I travel often, so I board her with them regularly and she is always excited to visit her home-away-from-home. They have been great with follow up questions and any concerns I've had, and always give expert advice.
Seamless adoption process, tons of knowledge, and support after adoption. We could not have asked for a better experience or a better member for our family. Gizmo came to us happy and healthy, and PRH provided all they knew about him during his time there. We feel very lucky to be apart of the PRH family!
We found Papayago on Petfinder when we were ready to add to our flock. The adoption process was seamless, we filled out the adoption papers, scheduled a visit, were matched with parrots whom met our criteria, and then adopted an amazing member to our family. PRH provided a ton of knowledge with basic parrot care, set us up with a cage, and gave us all of the information they had on Gizmo. He came to us healthy, calm, and ready to adjust to home life. We feel lucky to be a part of the PRH Family and we have continued to receive support from them since adoption. If you find that a parrot is right for you, this organization will set you in the right direction with education and practical knowledge!
Papayago Rescue House is home to some of the most passionate, knowledgeable, and hardworking people I know. It's also home to birds young and old of all sizes awaiting the family that they deserve. My experience as an adopter and volunteer has been excellent. We were not in a rush to adopt, but kept our hearts open while PRH staff assisted us in learning to read the body language of the bird that was gravitating to us. We gained a new family member for our home, but also have home away from home when we visit the people and birds that make up Papayago.
