Mission: As a nonpartisan center for the study of public policy, the panetta institute helps our communities and the country meet the challenges of the 21st century. Working particularly to attract thoughtful young people to lives of public service, helping them expand their knowledge of the policy process and develop their skills as future leaders.
Programs: Leon panetta lecture series - each spring the panetta institute brings together nationally known government and policy leaders to discuss current issues with central coast students and members of the community. The programs are broadcast throughout california. By the end of the 2016 season, more than 190 speakers had participated in the nineteen years of this program and student attendees were approximately 796 this season.
congressional internship program - this program has developed a reputation as the premier intern program in the nation and provides an opportunity for students from all economic backgrounds to work in washington, d. C. And participate in the democratic process first hand. By the end of 2016, 447 students had been placed in the offices of members of the california congressional delegation.
monterey county reads - this literacy initiative trains and places volunteers in public elementary schools throughout monterey county to help children read at grade level by the end of third grade. By the end of 2016, 3,488 volunteers had logged more than 125,400 hours reading one-to-one with more than 17,200 students.
