I am proud to be a part of Pájaro Valley Loaves and Fishes. I feel very fortunate to have been introduced to Loaves and Fishes when I was looking for volunteer opportunities after I retired. It is an amazing organization that does so much with so little. We provide nutritious staples as well as fresh fruits and vegetables to hundreds of families each week, and we serve hot lunch five days a week. We have four full time staff, and hundreds of volunteers that make this possible. We are supported by grants, donations and fund-raising. We purchase food from Second Harvest, and receive donations of food from local farmers, bakeries and others. We are an independent non-profit that recently celebrated its 33rd anniversary.
From the perspective of a returning resident after having lived in the SF bay area for 20 years and a working chef, I am proud to be able to contribute to an organization that does so much with so little.
Hands down Pajaro Valley Loaves and Fishes assist a large amount of families that need to supplement their groceries. Our pantry program operates 5 day a week, providing assistance to needy families with very little bureaucracy, an average of 43 visits from families daily. In addition is our hot meal program served 5 day a week consists of a nutritionally balanced lunch that is enjoyed by homeless, elderly, men, women and children. An average of 133 people are served daily, the numbers of individuals we have served this year (2011) will astound you.
Here is something else that’s amazing; We are able to do all of these and more with only three paid employees, an executive director, a chef and a pantry manager. The rest of the help comes from volunteers, people from all walks of life that live in our surrounding community.
We receive assistance in the form of grants, business and individual donations. We are able to PURCHASE a large amount of food from the Second Harvest Food Bank at a discount.
