Nonprofit Overview

Causes: Animal Protection & Welfare, Animals, Protection of Endangered Species, Wildlife Sanctuaries

Mission: Pacific Primate Sanctuary is located on the Island of Maui, Hawaii and is staffed by volunteers. The Sanctuary was founded in 1984 to provide safe haven and rehabilitation for threatened, endangered and distressed Central and South American monkeys given refuge from research laboratories, and rescued from tourist attractions and the pet trade. The Sanctuary has created naturalistic habitats where displaced primates can reclaim some of their birthright, living outdoors in rainforest enclosures in social groups. The Sanctuary maintains a successful federally authorized rehabilitation program for threatened and endangered New World Primates, including tamarins, marmosets, capuchin, and spider monkeys. PPS also offers resident immersion internships and innovative environmental education programs to students, volunteers and the community to help end the mass extermination of the Earth's plants and animals and promote respect for all living things.

I've been privileged to be a veterinary advisor for PPS since the mid 1990's. They have the highest standards of care for the New World primates. The habitats, diet, and medical care are first rate. Their educational programs and public outreach keep them in the forefront of how animal sanctuaries should be run. They are a model facility.

I have been privileged to be able to work with PPS since the late 1990's. I was first contacted for advice while I was working at a regional primate center. Since then I have visited numerous times, reviewed the facility, protocols, procedures and met with staff. I have done some staff training as well as general non human primate education sessions for the general public - to let them know about the animals and mission of PPS. PPS is a model for sanctuaries and does a fabulous job of caring for the monkeys for their whole lives.

The Pacific Primate Sanctuary is an amazing non-profit sanctuary. The place is carefully run by great volunteers that have a good eye for the needs of the monkeys and that always put their own needs second to that of the monkeys. All care provided at the sanctuary is well-planned and meticulously thought out, the volunteers make a super great effort in monitoring the monkeys and making sure that the resident monkeys are living the most comfortable life. The sanctuary is well-kept and an overall pleasant place to be!

Nonprofits are meant to help the little guys that big brother and big business overlook or leave behind in their eternal striving for profit and "progress". Pacific Primate Sanctuary literally looks after the little guys. Smaller monkeys who get overlooked due to the popular image of apes like chimpanzees but are no less important and face no less of the troubles. As a resident intern I can say this nonprofit does everything in its power to care for and enrich the lives of primates who are left behind by research, roadside attractions, and unnatural attempted domestication. It provides a safe haven and comfortable, natural-as-possible home assisted by a team of dedicated volunteers and professionals who show the monkeys the respect and love they deserve. What a place indeed!

Their goal is to ensure the primates live their best lives and, therefore, do not allow visitors to the sanctuary so the primates are put first. I volunteered here when living on Maui and was so fortunate to be a part of this incredibly caring and organized sanctuary. I helped with a variety of duties from preparing breakfasts for the primates, power washing the enclosures, gathering fruits and vegetables on the lush property to use in making enrichment for the primates.
PPS works very hard to ensure that each primate has what it needs. I learned so much during my time there and it was very difficult to leave the sanctuary when we moved off the island.

I have been blessed to be a part of the Pacific Primate Sanctuary (PPS) team for over 13 years, and have served many different roles at the Sanctuary- from Resident Intern to Operations Manager to serving on the Board of Directors. In each of these positions, while the roles were quite different- one thing has remained the same- my primary goal has always been to provide the monkeys with the best life possible, and to keep their needs as the top priority. This is something that makes PPS truly exceptional- the needs of the monkeys are always number one. Everything that is done, is done with their best interest at heart. The monkeys are treated with compassion and respect, and are catered to on an individual level. I am so grateful to be a part of the PPS community.

Pacific Primate Sanctuary (PPS) is dedicated to the protection, preservation and permanent care of threatened, endangered, and distressed primates. Where we strongly believe NO animal should ever go through suffering at the hands of humans. PPS is an entirely dedicated group of volunteers! It is a non-profit wildlife conservation organization here on the island of Maui. This place was created solely out of passion, love, and peace, and you still feel it decades later. I have the privilege of volunteering and providing care to many beautiful species of monkeys and I can tell you this place is magical! PPS provides refuge and rehabilitation. They have created beautiful naturalistic habitats where primates may recover from past trauma and abuse they have suffered. The sanctuary is located on such a serene property, it is a tropical jungle oasis that sparks joy and allows the monkeys to feel close to nature while still having the care they need to thrive and live healthy life’s. There is weekly enrichments, food grown in the garden and all around the property are strategically placed fruit trees. The monkeys are curious, interactive, alert, and happy! I can tell you I look forward to my time spent at the sanctuary every week and love knowing I am making a difference in the monkeys life’s.

I began caring for the monkeys at Pacific Primate Sanctuary as a teen and today, over 25 years later, I serve as a board member. At the Sanctuary, the needs of the non-human primates come first. It’s not just a philosophy or mission statement; this organization and its small group of committed staff walks its talk with the utmost integrity, providing the highest caliber of care to the monkeys and exceptional education opportunities through its internship program. Here, every decision is informed by what’s best for the monkeys, which stands in stark contrast to the animals’ former lives on exhibit as tourist attractions or as test subjects in laboratories. I’m proud to be a part of the Sanctuary, helping to further awareness of the intrinsic value and rights of our extended primate family.

Providing individualized care for animals whose natural habitat is being destroyed daily has been rewarding beyond belief. Run by a fully volunteer staff, the Sanctuary works to create a calm and peaceful place for these endangered monkeys to live out their lives and I have learned an incredible amount in my time here, both from my coworkers and the monkeys alike. Just looking into the eyes of a tamarin you can see their soul and after a while, once you've fed and cared for them enough, you can feel the mutual trust between you. It is in these moments that I am reminded of why we dedicate our lives to this work, to give refuge to these beautiful souls and help them feel safe, some for the first time in their lives. I love PPS and will forever hold the monkeys in my heart.

In doing so they take a stand against the tide of destruction.

PPS is a truly a one-of-a-kind organization. At the Sanctuary, monkeys that have been rescued (i.e. from laboratories, the exotic pet trade) are able to live out full, enriching lives in a habitat much like the one they would inhabit in the wild. As a current resident intern at PPS, I can testify to the high standard of specialized care each monkey receives. The health needs, dietary preferences, and overall comfort of each individual is of the utmost priority to the staff, who provide round-the-clock care. I feel incredibly privileged to be able to work with these beautiful animals every day.

I have been a resident Intern at PPS for the past year, and I have never encountered an animal care facility that puts forth the level of detailed care that this Sanctuary does. It is incredible to learn as much as we do about each species of primate, and to be responsible for so much of their care. I have become adept at recognizing the various vocalizations and behaviors of each monkey, preparing and distributing the specialized diets, and providing medical care when necessary. At this place of peace you truly learn what it takes to run a Sanctuary with the big picture in mind. It is a phenomenal feeling to help provide such a high quality of life to so many beings, especially when many of them have come from research facilities, the illegal pet trade, or tourist attractions. When you walk through the Corridor and see so many of the monkeys slob-flopping, a relaxed behavior that is rarely seen in captivity, you know that you’re helping out a spectacular mission.

I chose to become an intern at Pacific Primate Sanctuary because of the mission they exemplify, and that I haven't seen anywhere else. PPS truly creates a place of peace for so many monkeys that never had that chance before. Our sole goal while providing care for these creatures is to give them a life as close to that as they can get in the wild. We treat these monkeys and all of nature around us as equals, and it's so clear how happy they all are. You can always find the monkeys laying out enjoying the sun on a warm day, and it's so validating when you remember that some of them came from research labs where they never got to climb on trees, and experience the sun's rays on their back while taking a nap. I hope this sanctuary continues doing their amazing work for many more years to come, so that monkeys can continue to be saved and provided such phenomenal care for.

The Pacific Primate Sanctuary is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of primates that have been used in animal research, pets that have been surrendered, and others that have been misused or mistreated. The staff consists of amazing volunteers who dedicate their lives for a year or longer to create a habitat and life for the primates that is as close to a natural environment as is possible. Some of the rescued primates have gone from tiny wire cages where they never saw or felt sunshine to amazing enclosures filled with natural greenery, open air, sunshine, and shelter from the cool and damp elements. These abused primates have been given the chance to be part of a family group and to live a normal primate life. Kudos to the amazing staff of PPS for giving of their lives and hearts to the primates they have rescued!

My experience as a resident intern:
After graduating from University, I wasn’t quite sure what the next steps would be. I knew I wanted to go to Veterinary school someday, but at the time I felt called to gain more hands-on experience working with animals. For months, while working to save up money, I researched internships all around the world, but when I came across Pacific Primate Sanctuary the searching came to a halt. This internship offered an experience unlike any other I’d seen. The depth of training, including primate behaviors and communication, emergency medical care, colony management and so much more seemed like exactly what I had been looking for. Not to mention, living in a yurt in the rainforest surrounded by monkeys sounded pretty cool. When I was accepted to the program, I was simultaneously overjoyed and anxious about the journey that lied ahead.

After arriving at PPS, I quickly realized just how special the Sanctuary truly was. In all my work with animals, I had never seen a place so dedicated to understanding the specific behaviors, needs, and tendencies of each individual that resides here. Rather than just meeting their basic needs, the Sanctuary gives each individual the specialized care they need to heal and grow, both physically and emotionally. The program here is unique in that the Interns hold the responsibility of ensuring that each monkey is cared for, and the Sanctuary functions smoothly. Every team member has a say in what we think is best for each individual, and being trusted with the responsibility of caring for the monkeys has been a deeply empowering and rewarding experience. The level of training and care given by management far exceeded my expectations, and the depth of our responsibilities for and relationships with the animals was beyond what I could have anticipated.

For my independent project, I focused on what it means to be a Sanctuary and the different ways that we as caregivers can foster such an environment. I created three new documents for the manuals to specifically provide information and instruction on how we as caretakers can uphold the true meaning of Sanctuary. These documents focused on Hawaiian values, interpersonal communication, and the importance of mindfulness in animal caregiving. Through each of these documents, I sought to help clarify how we can integrate some of the more intangible and abstract components of being a PPS caregiver with the more tangible and concrete aspects of the working experience. By adding new types of protocols to the manuals that deliberately blend the core tenets of the Sanctuary—open-mindedness, peace, compassion, love—with our daily animal care tasks, I wanted to make the meaning of Sanctuary more accessible to each team member. Ultimately, I hoped to provide information about how we can manifest Sanctuary in every task we perform in caring for the monkeys.

Through this internship, I have learned more than I thought possible in just one year. There were times that were difficult and times that challenged me in many ways, but through those experiences I have grown. In this realm of work, we give of ourselves without expecting anything in return; Nonetheless, these monkeys and this experience have given me more than I could put into words. I gained an in-depth understanding of primate behavior, exotic animal care, and the functioning of a Sanctuary. I gained confidence as a trainer, animal caregiver, and member of the PPS team. I gained new perspectives on the world and a renewed sense of appreciation for the Earth and all of its beings. I gained strength, independence, and a deeper understanding of both myself and the people around me around me. I gained wisdom and knowledge from each team member, and made friendships and memories that I will cherish for the rest of my life.

As my internship draws to an end, I reflect on my time here with the monkeys, and the ways that they’ve made me smile and laugh each and every day. For example, the time(s) when Sylvan unknowingly dropped the contents of his ti packet to the floor of his Enclosure, then looked at me in disbelief as if I hadn’t given him a snack or was playing some sort of joke. Or the drastic lengths we went to to prevent Genevieve from eating critters that we knew would upset her stomach. I will miss the little things, like hearing Pacey “happy chirp” when I walk past his Enclosure and the way Nikki screams with excitement each day before receiving her medications as if it’s something totally new. I will miss hearing the monkeys call to one another in the afternoon, and the sound of Prospero banging on his metal roof in the early hours of the morning. These sounds, along with the singing of the birds, the mooing of cows nearby, and the sound of rain falling on the yurts became the soundtrack to our lives, and one that I will deeply miss.

I love the monkeys here with all my heart and cannot yet fathom the idea of leaving them. I will miss seeing their beautiful little faces, and the happiness that they bring me each day, however I know that the memories they have given me will bring comfort and joy to my heart for years to come. Leaving them will undoubtedly be the most difficult aspect of my experience here, but I am assured in knowing that they are the hands of some of the greatest people and caretakers I’ve known. This internship has been one of my most profound experiences and has impacted my life in more ways than I can count. Mahalo to everyone who makes the Sanctuary all that it is; I will forever be grateful for my time at PPS and the opportunity to live and grow with the amazing primates here- both human and monkey alike.

The staff and administration is totally devoted to this project and to the monkeys they care for. The facility is immaculate and beautiful. The animals have their own jungle environments similar to what their bodies need and are designed for. Their food is all the best quality, organic (much of it grown on the property) and balanced. They get sunshine and moonlight and cozy warm houses, along with music and tons of care and compassion. Impressive and positive!

As a volunteer of the Pacific Primate Sanctuary, I am honored to play a part in the healing of the monkeys that come and take refuge from places that had treated them terribly - laboratories, exhibits, domestication.

When the monkeys first arrive their hair is falling out, they’re malnourished, and emotionally and physically stressed. They look absolutely dreadful. They are given an enclosure to help them recover. It’s a wonderful sight to see them a few months later, settled in - enjoying their new home, chittering to one another, basking in the morning sun.

This is what some of the monkeys lived in while at the laboratories. Now it keeps the birds and rats from eating the fruit collected for them. From caging to nourishing; from caged to nourished. A place of refuge, for healing, the Pacific Primate Sanctuary.

For the past thirty years, the volunteers at Pacific Primate Sanctuary have provided refuge and rehabilitation to threatened, endangered and abused monkeys. The animals come from research laboratories, tourist attractions, and the inhumane exotic pet trade. We’ve learned how to nurture, heal, and rehabilitate traumatized animals, helping them become whole again. We plant their enclosures with trees, vines and flowers. The monkeys are free in the greenery. They can see the sky, feel the rain and sun on their bodies, and the wind through their fur.
Everyone who supports Pacific Primate Sanctuary, whether through donations, volunteering, or spreading the word is demonstrating true benevolence and compassion, and is making a positive difference. Do not wait for someone else to heal the world, become the healer. Do what you can for the things that matter to you, and never believe that you are insignificant. Volunteer your time, donate to charitable causes, choose to shop ethically, write letters to your representatives, and above all, exemplify the values that you hold dear.

It is truly a privilege working with these primates, many of whom are critically endangered. They receive so much love and attention from their caregivers. The facility is meticulously maintained for their health and well being. PPS strives to give the primates the best life in captivity possible, allowing them to live naturally and break free from the cycle of exploitation. PPS' compassionate approach succeeds in counteracting some of the abuse that has been inflicted on the primates in the past by recognizing the intrinsic value of all living beings.

The Pacific primate sanctuary is a truly exceptional non profit! Their primary objective is to give monkeys whom have known cruelty, abuse, and exploitation a chance to live out the rest of their lives with the peace, dignity, and respect that all creatures deserve. The animals are given the highest quality of care (spacious clean living space, healthy fresh food, and medical attention) with every consideration for their physical and mental well being. It is comforting to know that there are people out there compassionate enough to try and right some of the wrong that has been done to these animals. In a world facing mass extinction and serious habitat loss, it is high time for humans to be leaders in environmental stewardship and show compassion for all living things.

My story is about 2 spider monkeys that will always have a place in my heart.
The story of Carlos & Montana began quite awhile ago at the Maui County Zoo, I have not a lot of details to share on their lives there, other that the cages weren't big & the zoo was closed down because the County could no longer care for the animals properly.
There next "home" was at a tourist attraction on Maui where i worked and met the two brothers. We did the best that we could for them, the "cage " was bigger but it still was a "cage". I remember that the Pacific Primate Sanctuary came & gave us lessons on how to properly care for them. I know it wasn't the "right" home yet for them but we honestly & lovingly did the best we could for them. we grew fresh fruit on the farm which they received & the restaurant kitchen prepared their meals.
They knew us & we knew them. As with life, changes happen, my boss & i were laid off due to the economy, we were their "care givers" and we were leaving. Both of us were more worried about them, then for us finding new jobs.
The last day that my boss fed & cared for them, the two brother spider monkeys touched him at the same time, almost to say good bye & this "macho" man cried.
The new replacement "care givers" were not interested in having 2 monkeys to take care of & there were rumors going around that the brothers would be put down. The twosome must have a guardian angel, because somehow word got to the Pacific Primate Sanctuary to come & rescue the spider monkeys and they did.
PPS took so much care in getting the brothers ready to travel to PPS from the Maui tourist attraction and then the preparation for their new enclosure for Carlos & Montana at PPS was just unbelievable!
The two have been at PPS over 5 years, the enclosure has been expanded, has live plants & so much more. The boys are truly in paradise which they so deserve.
When I receive newsletters from PPS, I look for the photos and any stories on Carlos & Montana first. I am so impressed by all the articles in the newsletters and how much professional care goes into taking care of the residents at PPS. You feel the love that is given to each one of them and the respect that all of them receive.
Please support this nonprofit for giving a second chance to all the primates at PPS!

I just visited a wolf sanctuary North of L.A. They care for wolves, but rent the wolves out to movie studios, in other words, profit is part of their makeup. Pacific Primate is not in that business of renting their primates for $1200 a day profit. They are trying to keep the delicate ecological chain from losing another link by nurturing these seemingly exotic, but human like primates.
Every contribution goes right to the care and protection of the monkeys they accept or see born there.

Pacific Primate Sanctuary has been a huge blessing in our lives. We once had a pet monkey, which was foolish, irresponsible, and unfair to the monkey. It's almost impossible to find enough superlatives to describe the healing salve that Lucy, Erin and the dedicated team of volunteers spread liberally on the animals which find at PPS a place of safety. These wonderful primates - who fill such a vital niche in the wild - have been claimed for the most abusive and selfish reasons, totally unnecessary reasons. PPS stops at nothing to rescue those who have suffered so needlessly. Not only does PPS provide a tender and professional sanctuary for each individual monkey, but their work day in and day out has been helping to educate the public, helping to instil a deep respect for all animals. Having known PPS founder Lucy Lerner Wormser for over 50 years, it came as no surprise to discover her determination to provide a caring sanctuary for monkeys who had been so badly abused and exploited. Nearly all traces of their spark of life were dimmed, but with her tenacity and her inspiration passed along to a dedicated team of volunteers, friends, and family, PPS has gone from strength to strength. Although the sanctuary's primary purpose is to envelop the animals in an atmosphere of inter-species care, I've witnessed its work over decades become a valuable educational resource for professionals and students alike. I am just a donor. I live on the shores of the North Atlantic, some 5,000 miles from the Pacific Primate Sanctuary. I have never been to the sanctuary; never been to Hawaii. One evening in 2008 I was half-listening to NPR as I prepared dinner. They were running a series on sounds that are common in the lives of some people but might be virtually unknowable to the rest of us. I heard a woman's voice and what sounded like the chirping, chattering of birds in the background. As I paid closer attention I learned that the "birds" were actually monkeys, as heard by the sanctuary volunteers as they entered the enclosure each morning. And, of course, the voice was Lucy Wormser's. Lucy said that before the monkeys arrived at the sanctuary they had never felt the sun, the wind, rain on their fur, or seen the sky. Those words struck a chord deep in my soul.

The next day Google delivered me to PPS's doorstep and I made a donation. The following day I received a kind, welcoming email from Lucy. We have been friends ever since. Over the years I have learned much about the serious research and other work performed at PPS. But, as a layperson, what touches me most is the love and compassion for the monkeys that I feel every single time I interact with PPS. And best of all, of course, are the monkeys. In every picture or video clip, they positively glow with well-being and joy.

Just thinking about the monkeys living out their natural lives together in such a loving place brings me a special kind of peace. I can sit quietly in my chair here and, soon enough, I hear the monkeys "singing" in their beautiful safe haven provided by Lucy, her staff, and all the dedicated volunteers.

Five years since they have taken in my marmoset and whenever I ask for updates one is sent to me by Erin. I'm sent the most in depth and descriptive updates of whats happening at the sanctuary. They feed the monkeys the proper diet and are constantly trying to make the sanctuary better. I was fortunate enough to be selected as a resident intern at PPS and can't say enough about my experience there. The primary concern was always the well being and health of the primates entrusted to our care, first and foremost. The primates were treated with love, respect and dignity; PPS was THEIR sanctuary, THEIR home. One of my favorite Dr. Jane Goodall quotes reads "If only we can overcome cruelty, to human and animal, with love and compassion we shall stand at the threshold of a new era in human moral and spiritual evolution and realize, at last, our most unique quality; humanity." Pacific Primate Sanctuary is a nonprofit wildlife conservation organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of threatened, endangered, and distressed primates. Since 1984, the Sanctuary has maintained a federally authorized facility for threatened New World monkeys, many of which have been donated from research laboratories and rescued from the illegal exotic pet trade. PPS provides refuge and rehabilitation, creating naturalistic habitats where displaced primates can recover and form social groups. This Sanctuary currently is home to many species of primates. Currently there are 4 interns and one Manager on staff. All help is volunteer and the food is mostly donated. A solar system was recently installed and they could use some funds to help pay for that but it will greatly cut down on the electric bills.
As a volunteer, I help prep food and clean enclosures. The monkeys are not on display to the public and live peacefully with superb care from everyone involved. The property includes an organic garden to help produce fresh, healthy food for animals and interns. I knew very little about this organization when I signed on to volunteer and am impressed with the professional demeanor of the staff and the wonderful care given to the animals.
