Programs: The pnta enters into contracts to construct, repair, and maintain trailsacross u. S. National park and u. S. Forest service lands. Job corps and skywork crews, along with volunteer help, perform the work under thecontracts, this has multiple benefits by providing necessary trail work onfederal lands while also providing employment and training to job corps andsky youth. Sky (service knowledge youth) is a program developed by the pntato provide at-risk students with an outdoor-based work experience blendedwith academic and trade instruction. More than 21,000 hours ofwork took place in trail related projects.
pnta is the official organization for the development and maintenance ofthe pacific northwest national scenic trail, a 1,200 mile trail from thecontinental divide at glacier national park, montana to the pacific oceanat cape alava, washington. It determines the routing of the trail, obtainsright-of-way agreements with private and governmental landowners,constructs the trail over new or rerouted terrain, and maintains thetrail once it is established. The pnta maintains a web site for the trailand prepares maps, guidebooks and other informational publications forusers on the trail.
the pnta operates a native plant nursery primarily to provide vegetationfor restoration and mitigation projects that require native plants, such assalmon enhancement. The nursery is a component of the sky program describedon line 4b above and as such provides training for at-risk students.
