Mission: Outpost artists resources is an artist run, multi-service arts organization founded in 1991 and now located on the bushwick brooklyn/ridgewood queens border. Outpost supports new creative work through its residencies, events and uses its space as a social meeting ground for local artists. Our mission is to serve artists in need of technical assistance with video, audio, and physical computing based art projects and to foster a dialogue between visual art and experimental music. Outpost hosts gallery exhibitions, artist talks, screenings and events that pair visual art, video, experimental music, and performance in an effort to bring adventurous audiences challenging interdisciplinary projects.
Programs: Cuts and burns residency programhas long been a core component of the organization's activities and is dedicated to assisting artists complete projects or develop new techniques in video, experimental sound, new media and interactive echnology, by providing them with professional editors, engineers, and programmers who are passionate about contemporary art. The residency consists of 40 to 80 hours of access to our video studio with a video editor. During this time the resident has many options for advancing their project. For work in video post-production, the artist is able to edit, digitize footage, receive color correction, dvd authoring, advanced graphics, sound mixes, multi-channel editing, upward resolution, and transfers between a variety of video formats. For custom programming, artists are paired with a professional programmer and work from scratch to create customized programming and hardware for their project. This past fiscal year outpost has granted residencies to video and new media artists from diverse backgrounds and approaches: hanna schaich, an artist from germany developed and completed two segments from her "new york trilogy" a video that juxtaposes animals and athletes as a means of accessing a world where "passion and desire are absent. " following the completion of the residency, new york trilogy was screened at microscope gallery as part of an evening paired with videos by artist janet biggs. Akiko ichikawa was granted a residency to complete post production on her video "limited, limited edition," based on a site-specific performance in newark, new jersey wherein she set up shop as a shirt vendor and created custom shirts bearing phrases she translated into japanese, provided to her by passers-by. Alex nathanson completed "letters to john grisham" based upon real fan letters to grisham, whichare realized in the video by actors reading and performing the letter's text. Tatiana istomina was granted a residency to complete her video "twins and pies" a fictional documentary that analyzes the influences of russian-soviet culture on the philosophy of ayn rand by imagining the life of a fictional twin "emilia" who remained in the ussr and wrote moral stories for children. "strap-on," dani ploeger's "net-facilitated" new-media performance piece, makes use of live video and motion activated custom robotics to allow performers in different areas of the world to physically interact via a streaming video performance ploeger was granted a double-length residency to complete the programming necessary for this work. Vanessa cronan's piece "shelter" is a guided process performance through which a participant experiences embodying an earthworm while wearing an earthworm suit, described as "part documentation, part meditation, part music video" - cronan was granted a residency to complete this video for an exhibit at the detroit museum. Additionally, outpost's subsidized rentals supported artists elena del rivero, for her project "nu descendant"; cyprien gaillard's project involving massive dancing vegetation "nightlife"; video of mary ziegler's animate sculptures. The seethru series is the program through which outpost has developed as a community performance and exhibition space of 1000 square feet. Outpost curates and presents gallery shows with a central video art component, on themes of their choosing. The program has also evolved to include events, curated by the outpost, that pair historic and contemporary video art with live experimental music, in addition to being host to diverse music, dance and performance events. In the past year, seethru has drastically expanded in scope, and has become both a more central and vital component of the outpost's activities. Rico gatson's "color line" gallery show opened the season for outpost: a month long show featuring the work of liz atzberger, robert otto epstein, rico gatson, ben godward, alex lee harris, bjoern meyer-ebrecht, brooke moyse, ellie murphy, ursula schneider, patrick todd, siebren versteeg and tamara zahaykevich who's pieces satisfied the agenda of color exploration through sculpture, painting and even sound installation. In november, pat spadine, creator, composer and artistic director of the ashcan orchestra, took residence in outpost's space forthe first "maker" residency during which spadine would create a solenoid driven, motorized carillon which activated bells and corresponding colored lightbulbs. During his residency spadine presented a lecture on the technology he was using to create the device and presented two performances of his ensemble culminating in the use of the finished instrument. David linton's realtime-audio visual performance series "distended cinema" began in october, with video and experimental music pairings from raphael shirley, thomas dexter,jeremy slater and shige moriya, chris cochrane and kevin bud jones, john king and benton c bainbridge, and david linton with greg fox. Gamelan son of lion occupied outpost's space with their gamelan orchestra in december, performing their contemporary compositions for tradition javanese and balinese instruments and screening a video of a traditional puppet show with a contemporary script. Soldier/kane, the powerhouse experimental rock duo featuring composer and violinistdave soldier and multi-instrumentalist jonathan kane performed compositions from their new project at the end of december, part of an event organized in collaboration with momenta art gallery. Eric barry drasin's single channel cheesburgers is a audio-visual performance series supporting emerging artists in new media video paired with experimental music the first iteration of this event a was held at outpost in late february. Distended cinema returned to outpost for another installment in david linton's series and included performances by luke dubois, lovid, tristan perich, raz mesinai, lisa gwilliam and ray sweet, david linton and ha-yang kim. Aaron roche's contemporary music event featured violist nadia sirota, clarinetist doug weisman and roche on guitar and voice. Outpost was once again host to the ende tymes festival of noise and experimental liberation which this year featured both video screenings and live audio-visual performances. Outpost's final gallery show opened during bushwickopen studios weekend and was curated by yevegniya baras and featured painting video and sculpture by ej hauser, melissa brown, erin lee jones, yevgeniya baras, jackie tileston, anna schachte and fabienne lasserre. Outpost's season ended with an evening from the dark circuits festival curated by hans tammen.
