Mission: Under Oregon law, water rights transferred to instream use are held in trust on behalf of the people of the State of Oregon for public use and benefit to protect habitat, improve water quality and provide for recreation. Since its founding in 1993, the Oregon Water Trust has pioneered use of Oregon's Instream Water Rights Law and Conserved Water Statute, negotiating the first lease and the first purchase of water rights for transfer to instream use and completing the first conserved water project. Since then, OWT has protected 86 streams, with 874 steam miles benefited. These acquisitions improved water quality and habitat for coho, spring and fall chinook, winter and summer steelhead, and cutthroat, redband, brown and bull trout.
