A truly respected NGO who support many on the ground projects in Borneo and Sumatra helping to save orangutan lives and habitat. The varied conservation work Orangutan Outreach funds, really does also improve orangutan welfare in many of the orangutan rescue centres. They are a well informed NGO who work tirelessly and collaboratively with other NGO’s and as an NGO ourselves whom have benefitted from being funded by Orangutan Outreach (for specific veterinary projects), we can wholeheartedly say they are deservedly respected by many people working in orangutan conservation worldwide.
I've been supporting Orangutan Outreach for 13 years, and I am incredibly impressed with the work of this charity supporting orangutans! Their dedication to protecting these amazing creatures and their habitats is truly inspiring. The organization not only rescues and rehabilitates orphaned and injured orangutans, but also works tirelessly to combat deforestation and raise awareness about the importance of conservation. It’s clear they care deeply about the animals and the environment. I love how transparent they are about where donations go, and seeing the progress made is rewarding. Orangutan Outreach is an incredible organization that raises funds and awareness for orangutan conservation. As a young child, I loved nothing more than orangutans. With the help of my mom I reached out to ask what I could do to help orangutans from home, and it started me on a life long path of deep love and appreciation for conservation work. Because of this I got my degree in Parks and Recreation Management to help cities recreate with respect to our forests’ sustainability here in the states. Rich works tirelessly to educate on the palm oil issue to save our red haired cousins. I’m so grateful for the work this organization does to help the orangutans and people of Malaysia.
I have donated to and volunteered with Orangutan Outreach for over 10 years. Orangutan Outreach is passionate about Orangutan conservation and education. They actively support conservation efforts both in zoos and on the ground in Indonesia.
I learned about Orangutan Outreach in 2015, when I was planning a trip to Indonesia. Rich referred me to RAW Wildlife Encounters at the time, and that is who I chose to travel with. What a great decision. I was able to visit the SOCP "baby house" and see semi-wild orangutans in Gunung Leuser National Park and was awestruck. It solidified my love of orangutans, and propelled me to take several more trips on my own between 2016-2017. I volunteered at the BOS Samboja Sanctuary in Borneo in 2017. I mostly volunteered with the sun bears because there was a need at the time for a 2-month volunteer. But I also had the chance to see the orangutans on their "islands" each day, and make enrichment for them as well as the sun bears. I can't wait to go back; it's been far too long. I have supported Orangutan Outreach whenever I can, and will continue to do so. Rich Zimmerman is the REAL deal, and his lifelong mission to save this incredible and highly endangered species is a noble one. I recommend them highly as a non-profit to donate to! A dear friend who has since passed donated to OO for my Christmas present a few years ago. The attached pic is the first time I saw an orangutan (a baby, no less!) in the protected wild in Sumatra, where they should be!!!
I've known Rich for the past 15(ish) years as a fellow orangutan lover, adopter of orangutans, and supporter of Orangutan Outreach. His knowledge was invaluable as I prepared for this year's trip to Borneo to see firsthand the amazing work of Borneo Orangutan Survival and Orangutan Outreach. He's been a source of support since my return from the trip as we've discussed ways to help the orangutans and shared stories. When I recently visited Center for Great Apes in Florida, he knew the staff and orangutans there, too, so I was able to relay messages of love and support. Orangutan Outreach works tirelessly to do amazing work to help save these beautiful critically endangered apes. I'm so grateful for Rich and the work Orangutan Outreach does!
I have donated to Orangutan Outreach several times. I follow the work they do to raise money to rescue and rehabilitate orangutans in Borneo and Sumatra. Their website, social media, newsletter and adoptive parent information keep donors informed on the issues that matter, especially regarding deforestation and how it effects the orangutans. They provide updates from the rescue centers they support, allowing donors to follow the adoptees as they progress from forest school to release. If you care about orangutans, the environment, and/or wildlife, adopting an orangutan is a great way to learn about these special creatures and support their work.

We invited Orangutan Outreach to come to our school district for an education program with our middle school summer school students. OO's team worked with us ahead of time to learn about our curriculum (creating a sustainable island) so that the program could be tailored to meet our needs. The presentation focused on the orangutan as an example in order to learn about ecosystem dynamics, relationships between animals and people, economic and societal factors, and issues that impact sustainability. The presentation was so engaging and was the perfect springboard into our island creation project! Through interactive activities and discussions, students (and teachers) learned so much and everyone was filled with hope related to conservation and sustainability across the world! This was truly one of the best presenters we have ever had! Thank you Orangutan Outreach!

I virtually adopt two orangutans through Orangutan Outreach. The regular adoption updates I receive are so full of detail and beautifully written, I really feel like I know these orangutans who I love so much.
I have supported OO for many years. I am a proud adoptive parent to two beauties! I donate during the special events they have. The information OO gives to us via the website, not only about my orangutans, but of all the other orangutans and the projects they are working on is inspiring and encouraging in regard to the conservation work they do. I enjoy getting the newsletter and looking at social media for updates. The hard work on these platforms clearly shows! I am happy to be able to do something to help this organization. Orangutan Outreach walks the walk. Plain and simple. The organization has a strong moral value for the orangutans in which it fights to save. The organization has fought to give orangutan orphans in need a safe and loving environment surrounded only by professionals who do what they know is right, instead of making excuses, pointing fingers, and displacing blame. These orangutans deserve nothing less. I have seen some of the negative reviews below and I question how much they actually claim to be involved and their so-called knowledge of this organization. Many highly reputable individuals have commented with glowing reviews of this organization. I, personally, can't speak highly enough about what Orangutan Outreach has truly accomplished for orangutans in need. They set a moral precedent that shows where their heart is.

I am not only a Donor I am a volunteer and a friend of oranguntans and Mr. Richard Zimmerman. I have been donating and raising funds for OO since their start. OO is one of the most reliable non-profit organizations working to ensure the safety, rehabilitation, love, care for wild orangutans that have been victims of pet trade, orphans whose mothers were slaughtered by palm oil, coal or other workers. I have nothing to hide an my name can appear publicly (as a difference to the ones who write lies and want to make a bad name with no reason) saying all these remarks about the quality and tranparency of Richard and Orangutan Outreach. Today I have donated money to OO and will continue to do so until I die. Great work and long live wild and captive orangutans all are important and equal individuals.
I got involved with Orangutan Outreach about 5 years ago, when I was inspired to donate to an organization after seeing Orangutan Island. I found OO, and collected checks from friends, sent them off and never expected to hear from the founder Rich Zimmerman. But within a week, I got an email and a phone call thanking me for my donation, personally. Rich and I started communicating regularly, and over the years he's kept me abreast about his endeavors, and has shared his love of the red apes with old and young alike. He's spoken for free 2 times at a local high school while visiting for a nearby conference, and has worked tirelessly around the clock without pay for 5+ years. He is a realist, and knows he is working against deep corruption and poverty. He won't paint a pretty picture, and let's face it, many Americans want the cute photos of Orangutans, but don't care to hear that their cookies are the source of their demise. But Rich is honest, cares more deeply than the majority of humans about our great apes, and he works himself to the bone to do everything in his power to better their futures.
Orangutan outreach has provided much needed support and acts with the best intentions to not only support on the ground field work to conserve and save orangutans, but is also an active advocate to ensure the correct information is spread. Watching orangutan outreach grow and provide necessary and critical support to orangutans has meant that we have a good chance to continue to protect, save and ensure steps are put in place to halt this species and it's home from becoming extinct. It is not with login in with fake names and making false accusation to Orangutan Outreach that you will get what you think you deserve! It is repulsive and childish to see the lies agains that Organisation that does all in their hands to save remaining orangutans. They do not do anything fullish or out of their ego to save like some other want to be organization. They support true people on site,..not uneducated unprofessional bored people turned to Indonesia for fame. You should be ashamed of yourself to log with fake names and continue your jealousy incited war against them. What they do is there in front of all world to see.. Hence they will get stronger and will have some people like yourself who are jealous to make everyting possible at their hands to stop the good once from doing a precious job. Having known Orangutan Outreach since its inception, I can say without hesitation that this is an organisation led by integrity and passion. The support they have given orangutans has changed the lives of many of these creatures, whether in captive situations or in the wild. Negative reviews here seem to come from disgruntled donors to a questionable initiative that compels schoolchildren and young people to donate to support the promises of a man who has let down the orangutan conservation effort dramatically in recent years. Because Richard Zimmerman who directs Orangutan Outreach did due diligence on this initiative (as have my organisation, Orangutan Land Trust) and found it lacking in transparency, he has spoken out to warn donors to consider this before handing over their money. This so-called "orangutan conservation group" that he has been accused of attacking has a total of 2 orangutans in a zoo setting (having lost one and had 11 others confiscated by the authorities due to negligence). I know of no reputable orangutan conservation organisation that would either work with or endorse this group. Singling out Orangutan Outreach for having the integrity to condemn this group for failure to provide sufficient care to orangutans in their facility is nothing more than a personal attack from misguided people.
I cannot speak highly enough of Richard Zimmerman and Orangutan Outreach. The efforts of OO are far reaching and I know when I donate to them, the money is actually going to genuine orangutan conservation efforts on the ground, where it matters and where it will have the best impact. OO support other genuine NGO's in Kalimantan like Nyaru Menteng, IAR, JAAN and COP. As the Director of Orangutan Outreach I find the integrity that was displayed by Richard by severing ties with another "orangutan conservation effort" in Sintang, when a baby orangutan named Luna mysteriously "disappeared" from forest school speaks volumes about this organisation and the people behind it. To OO and Richard this was a totally unacceptable occurrence and they walked away, but not before ensuring the remainder of the orangutans in Sintang were taken to a genuine, legal rehabilitation centre (IAR) with qualified, experienced staff. I take my hat off to Richard and OO for all they have done and continue to do for orangutans.
Simon, it seems that you need to get your facts right about Orangutan Outreach. You need to learn what the organisation represents along with what all its members stand for. The real hero's of the orangutan cause can all be found on the Orangutan Outreach facebook page. Some are known and some are not. Without question, Orangutan Outreach are doing the right thing when it comes to helping the orangutans in every way possible (unlike some other people who are more interested in garnering a reputation that is not deserved due to media hype and are nothing more than legends in their own minds). Orangutan Outreach is all about total dedication and passion for the orangutan cause and doing everything that is possible to help them. International Animal Rescue are one of the most dedicated organisations in the world when it comes to helping orangutans and it's no mistake that Orangutan Outreach are working closely with them in trying to save the lives of orangutans. By working closely with various organisations in Borneo such as, the center for orangutan protection, the BOS Nyaru Menteng Reintroduction Center founded by Lone Dröscher, and international animal rescue. When my 7 year old daughter told me she wanted to save the orangutans I looked on line to find a web site that she could use to learn what to do. We contacted Richard Zimmerman at redapes.org and was met with support and enthusiasm. He was delighted to help a young child find ways she could help. At first it was just spreading the word about palm oil. My daughter Allie, was able to easily negotiate the web site and print materials needed to educate her friends and family. Now at age 14 she has started Purses for Primates and Antiques4apes. She has raised over 3,000.00 and has given every penny to Orangutan Outreach. We had the pleasure of meeting Rich Zimmerman and my daughter will tell you it was a thrill. She had the opportunity to meet her hero. Over the last 7 years Richard has provided Allison with the support and information she needed to continue her fight to save the great red ape. We trust this foundation with all her hard work and money earned. We know every penny will be put to good use. I can honestly say there has never been a moment of doubt or wonder. We trust this non-profit and its leader. He is a roll model for my daughter and other kids as well. He understands that it is important to support the children in their endeavors. If kids care about a cause the sky is the limit.

He does his due diligence and applies the funds his group receives to projects worthy of support. Orangutan Outreach work tirelessly to spread awareness about the plight of the orangutan. They have provided significant funding to International Animal Rescue (IAR) which, as a result, has rescued many animals in West Borneo. Supported by Orangutan Outreach and other progressive NGOs around the world IAR has embarked on an ambitious orangutan conservation program. The support has been open and transparent and the commitment unquestionable. A great NGO.
Hello All, I speak as I find and have experience as an international photographer and a press photographer in the UK. Out of all the NoPro organisations I know and have worked with I rate two at the top of the tree (in no order) International Animal Rescue and Orangutan Outreach. I find Simon P's comments below wholly unacceptable and defamatory. Knowing both organisations I do I would suggest Simon P clearly has a hidden agenda. One of the questions below asks "How much of an impact do you think this organization has?" The answer is LIFE-CHANGING for the simple reason, they save animals lives. They get off their bottoms and rescue animals that would otherwise die. They have saved tens if not hundreds of lives over the years, how many can Simon P notch up directly to himself. I cannot abide internet trolls and cowards who post on these pages with the sole intent of causing reputation damage which only in the long term harms the animals. Anyone who harms animals is no friend of mine and I would suggest has no right to be casting false aspersions on others on a website like this. Orang Outreach protect their animals from many types of lesser species of humans and it is clear to me who one of them is. If you have issue with Rich Z act like a man Simon P and pick up the phone to Richard or myself, and please do not post such childish bile on professional websites such as this. This organization actively campaigns against other orangutan conservation groups, attacks school children who donate to any other organization, and make up lies to discredit and diminish their efforts when they do. You'll never know where your money goes - but, you can be sure it won't go to conserving orangutans in the wild, they now favor taunting caged orangutans with iPads, which last on average 7 seconds in the hands of these animals. This organization has become about building a personal media empire and, seem to have a real scarcity mentality around anyone else trying help orangutans (even those who focus on wild orangutans, not caged orangutans which seems a different effort to iPads in cages). My students will no longer be donating, and we'll actively push other schools to stay right away from this organization. They are a bad role model for conservationists and certainly not good for kids to be involved with.
I am very impressed by this organization and the director. He is knowledgable and has several times shared information with me which many organization staffs do not take the time to do.
The critical mission to save the last orangutans cannot be overstated.

The M.O.M - Missing orangutan mothers campaign was in local zoos, providing information about deforestation and the diminishing habitat in Indonesia. The organization is playing a major role in connecting zoos who are trying to make a difference in getting the word out about how palm oil is the cause of deforestation in Indonesia. Orangutan Outreach created the first kids group Forest School 101 so kids can be involved in helping these beloved creatures.
