The OCF’s website and user forum provided me with the most helpful information while I was recovering from partial glossectomy surgery and undergoing radiation treatments for oral cancer. They are one of the few oral cancer nonprofits who actually fund oral cancer research, support local free oral cancer screenings, as well as actively advocate for oral cancer patients and survivors.
I was diagnosed with oral cancer a year and a half ago, and was devastated because I have never smoked and rarely drink. I underwent major surgery and 6 weeks of radiation. During my recovery I did a lot of online research to find out more about this disease, and found the Oral Cancer Foundation's website. They provide the most comprehensive and current information on oral cancer, and also host an online patient forum that I found invaluable for practical and useful information for patients that doctors don't tell you, since most of it is from first-hand experience of other patients and survivors.
I found the OCF so helpful and their mission to increase education, awareness, early detection, and research so admirable that I volunteered to organize the first OCF charity walk in Honolulu, HI on 8/20/17. As the most important part of the event we had about 6 doctors and dentists volunteer to screen participants for oral cancer. The OCF provided great advice, assistance and support for this event. I will be forever grateful to the OCF for providing knowledge and moral support throughout my cancer ordeal.
