Mission: OpNet was founded in 1997 to forge a strong business-community partnership to benefit both the new information technologymulti-media industries and low-income adults. The goal of the program is to recruit highly motivated women, minorities and disadvantaged people between the ages of 18-25 to be trained in information technology/multi-media skills and to work with industry partners to provide them with both post-program internships and permanent placements. Since its inception, OpNet has successfully trained 200 women and minorities and received national recognition for its efforts.
Programs: To be eligible for OpNet, an applicant must have a GED or high school diploma, be a woman, minority, or economically disadvantaged between the ages of 18-25, and demonstrate a commitment and willingness to learn. Upon acceptance, students participate in three separate components, over a period of 6 weeks:
ENTRY-NET delivers five weeks of webs design, job readiness, and project management training, and an orientation to the new information technology industry;
INTERN-NET provides critical, on-the-job experience with paid internships in information technology companies.
SUPPORT-NET promotes intern success and long-term career development with training stipends, counseling, financial life-support subsidies, job placement assistance, continuous training, tutoring, mentorship's, scholarships and peer group support.
