Mission: The mission of Operation Rehydration, Inc., is to combat the lethal effects of dehydration from diarrheal disease on the children of the developing world.
Programs: Operation Rehydration, Inc., ships oral rehydration salts ("ORS," similar to Pedialyte) to the Baylor College of Medicine-Bristol Meyer Squibb Children's Clinical Centre of Excellence-Lesotho ("the clinic"). From the clinic, the doctors further distribute the ORS to rural health centres in Lesotho, which they already visit regularly on a circuit. In Lesotho, like other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, dehydration from diarrheal disease is often fatal in children, constituting the third-leading cause of death for children between the ages of 1 and 5. Cholera, gastroenteritis, rotavirus, etc., diarrheal diseases from the rare to the common unneccesarily kill nearly 2 million children every year. Fortunately, ORS are as cheap as they are simple...on the order of 30 cents/dose. This effort saves lives by providing the under-equipped rural health centers of Lesotho with much-needed relief from diarrheal disease, and all at the incredibly low price of 30 cents a dose.
