Mission: Operation Catnip formed in 1994 to meet a need in the community that was not being addressed - the overpopulation of stray and feral (wild) cats. Operation Catnip is an outgrowth of a local rescue group that rescues and adopts out hundreds of pet dogs and cats each year. In 1997 a decision was made to create a separate organization to aggressively pursue the mission of the feral and stray cat program. With its own Board of Directors, comprised of veterinarians and business professionals, Operation Catnip became and remains the first and largest program of its type in the southeastern United States. As of year end 2004, Operation Catnip has sterilized over 20,000 cats since its inception in 1994.
Programs: Operation Catnip provides a monthly, one day clinic for the sterilization and vaccination of feral and stray cats. This program is provided at no charge to the public. Donations are the sole support of our program. In 1998 a chapter was formed in Gainesville, Florida - this chapter was organized by Julie Levy, DVM, one of the founders of the charter chapter in Raleigh, North Carolina.A third chapter formed and started clinic operations in Richmond, Virginia in February of 2001. In 2002 a $20,000 grant, received under the Fresh Steps Program, enabled Operation Catnip to institute a voucher program that provided sterilization and vaccination of stray and feral cats. Several local vets agreed to accept the vouchers for low cost spay/neuter and vaccination with a small co pay required from the caretaker. This funding allowed Operation Catnip to sterilize an additional 572 cats, outside of our monthly clinics. Operation Catnip (Raleigh and Gainesville) continues to provide vouchers for the low cost sterilization and rabies vaccination of stray and feral cats.
